It's been entertaining reading the thread on "Best Performing Experience" and although my post is similar in some ways, I thought it deserved it's own post.
But what is the most memorable reaction from a spectator that you can recall. As I've only been doing magic for a couple years, I've only got a couple, but after performing Sankey's Paperclipped, the girl who I showed didn't say a word, stood up, and ran at me...then hugged me. I was quite shocked at her reaction (although, somewhat pleased ) But I'm sure some of you probably have some pretty funny stories to share. And keep it clean, boys.

I performed for a couple of ladies several years ago. Very nice people and very respectable people. When I was at the climax of my closing effect, one of the ladies all of a sudden blurted out "Oh Holy <insert the "brown" word here>" !! and then covered her mouth out of embarassment. It was very funny and everyone at the show got a huge chuckle out of it.

Just last Friday night, I performed "Signature Effect" for a small group in the bar I was working. The crowd went NUTS. They got so loud with the "No Way!" screaming the manager asked them to tone it down!
I am now convinced to use "Signature Effect" as much as possible.

Bascomb, what is "Signature Effect"?
 My 2 best reactions- #1 I was working in a group home with teen aged boys. I did a trick for one boy and he ran into his room and pulled the blankets over his head. #2 A couple weekends ago, I was in a bar and I had a girl pick a card. I told her that I had a dream the night before and I had awoke and put a piece of a playing card into my necklace. She was totally shocked and spent the rest of the night asking me about premonitions and psychic abilities. I love this stuff! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smiles/vampire.gif"> |

I'm a college student and have something of a party animal in me. Nothing too much but I like to go out and have fun with my friends. They all know I'm a magician and when they've been drinking often ask me to perform. Sometimes this is a little tricky cause I've also been drinking (but not always that much).
This lends itself to magic a great deal. Drunk people aren't very observant and I can get away with just about anything at times. However, they're not fall down stupid drunk. The next day they remember me doing some CRAZY stuff, like this one time, a friend was holding a deck of cards and pulled one out of the middle and hid it in my desk and locked the drawer. He then challenged me to guess the card, and EVERYONE there was "Like no way. He's not REALLY magic, he can't do that!". I asked for the pack of cards remaining. Shuffled them once and threw them in the air and as they were falling said, "7 of clubs!". Sure enough it was the 7 of clubs. They all went NUTS! I've since been asked many times to repeat the effect but smile and say, "It's better having only done it once." I still have people I don't really know see me and run across the room to talk to me and see what I'm going to do next. Free drinks and admission all over campus Sounds great right? Wanna know how to do it? Well if the person who is holding the deck is silly enough to show you the card when they show it to someone else? It's not that hard... Everyone remembers the trick, no one remembers that the card was actually shown to me! ~Spiff PS As you can imagine at a small school I have a very cool reputation! |

Thanks for the question. My good friend, Ron Giesecke turned me onto "Signature Effect" by Darwin Ortiz from his CardShark Book. Ortiz gives credit to Gary Kurtz's "Psychological Fusion". The Signature Efect takes use of a very clever sleight called the "MC Spread Double Lift" (Mike Close uses this in a few effects.) . That appears in Workers 2. Basically a "Signature" visibly goes from one selected card to another. It is very striking and has a great ending that builds. If you are looking for a great effect to start doing, learn this routine, buy the book! It is that good.

John Bannon's Tattoo You is a great routine for walk-around that gets a very strong response. I've been using this one for quite a few years. The look on the spectator's face when you slide that signature to your card is AWESOME!
Rick BTW, it's in Smoke and Mirrors.

Okay,
The spectator chooses a card from a blue deck. They sign their initials in the corner of their card. You then pull a red-backed "prediction" card from your pocket that you had a dream about the night before. You show it matches. You then take the chosen signed card, and slide the initials onto the red card and give it to the spectator.

I was travelling in a small town of India and I did a bill switch for a Sadhu (a hindu priest).
These priests are said to have psychic powers. In fact, the word 'Sadhu' comes from the sanskrit 'sidhi' that means ordinary and supreme accomplishment. 'Ordinary' is what we will call miracles and 'supreme' is enlightenment Anyhow, I switched 10 rupies for a 100 rupies (100 rupies at that time was worth 2 dollars but was a lot of money there) and I cannot really describe the face of astonishment he had. I gave the 100 rupies bill of course. Two dollars was a small price to pay for that face. After that, everyone started to call me "magic man" in that town, and they never heard of David Blaine mind you.

With my top three loves being, NASCAR, MAGIC, and my WIFE (you can guess the order)I am fortunate enough to be able to get pit and garage passes to about four races a year.
Last year I was in Richmond for the fall race and was trying to show my favorite driver (RUSTY) a cool trick, Rusty's PR guy said it would go way over his head but said he knew who would enjoy it so he went and got Bobby Labonte. Upon seeing my miracle Bobby exclaimed "there aint no ------- way" and he told me to wait. When he got back he had Jeremy Mayfield with him and it got just a little less of a response but then again Jeremy was in his drivers suit still. Jeff |

Nums, that's a pretty cool story. I'm a CART/F1 fan, so I can imagine what your experience would be like! Great story!

I was performing magic at a party for a biker club (the National Chopper Club UK) and the police turned up to the clubhouse.
The club president was franticaly trying to stop the police from entering the clubhouse and breaking up the party and brought me down to do a few magic tricks. I did a few standard close up things (Hellbound Spellbound, Linking Bands etc) and then as we were outside and it was dimly lit I thought I would give the Balducci levitation a quick try. Anyway I hammed up the performance and as I rose off the floor the two officers jaws dropped in astonishment. At this point and still a bit bemused I think, they left telling us to keep the noise down. I was taken back to the club house where it was announced that not only could I levitate but I had also made the police dissapear...they then proceeded to get me hammered on free alcohol.... I like that kind of reaction !! I have had similar equally good reactions to the Balducci (It's just a case of picking your moment.) Linkster |

The two greatest reactions I've ever gotten were:
1) Working in a restaraunt, performing for an older Italian family of about 10 or so, they'd been drinking, but not too much, I had them going on The Insurance Policy, they thought they had me, then I hit the climax, and they went Ballistic!! They kept asking me to do more, and by the end every table in that section of the restaraunt was asking for me! 2) Working at Canada's Wonderland, selling magic at a small booth run by a local magic shop, I performed the Svengali for some tourists. These two girls went insane! They were running around, screaming and jumping! The manager had walked in at the same moment, panicked, thinking something was wrong, and called in security. By the time the security arrived the girls had calmed down, but holy ****, the sets of lungs on those girls, people were leaving the store due to them. Jeff

Best reaction from a spectator? Every time I do the "3-D Multiplying Rabbits" by George Murray. It's incredible how much fun you can create with this prop. It's my restaurant opener: it's relatively easy, sets the mood and grabs everyone's attention. People scream when a multitude of rabbits appear in their hand!

Great stories, everyone. Since starting this topic, I've since had another great reaction! I was showing a lady "Card to Ceiling" and upon completion of the trick, she immediately asked if I would marry her!! No, I had never met her before that night, and no, I didn't accept. However there's more to that story, but I'll leave it at that!

Oh, all the stories I could tell. My favorites are:
1) One spectator was inclined to laugh when he was suprised. Unfortunately, I finished an effect while he was in the middle of a bite of pizza. He started laughing, almost chocked and fell out of his chair onto the floor. 2) I used to live in a dorm with football players. I performed a color change for a group of them and one was so suprised that he jumped out of his seat and ran through a locked door, breaking the lock. I love FREakInG people out.

I did the Balducci for a friend in school. Well needless to say he went and then said a bad word and a teacher went and gave him detention. He was mad but still freaked he thinks I'm the devil now. hehe

I'm not a golfer (I do appreciate the SKILL and patience it takes!)...but I think doing close-up is like golf...you have some bad (or terrible) experiences once 'n a while...but those ones where you make people scream and run (had that happen at least once anyway!)...make up for other times!! Maybe I should go to the golf course with a deck of cards!??

Best reaction?
I was doing a live guest spot on a radio station in Tucson, AZ and invited everyone listening to get a deck of cards and play along. I even brought a deck of cards for the DJ host to use. I talked everyone through a version of JIm Steinmeyer's "Remote Control" and, at the revelation, the DJ cussed ON THE AIR! I was fortunate to have taped the program and now have the unbleeped reaction preserved for posterity. Ah, memories...
