So what do you guys think of the DVD? I've honestly never heard of Jeff Wessmiller, but I'd like to hear your thoughts of the demo/DVD itself. I understand that it's not out yet, though I felt it would be a nice to get some opinions. His bottom deal was pretty lousy in my opinion (noticeable finger flash), but the mucking was pretty well done. He's definitely no Forte though Smile

This guy has a nice rifflestack and his mucking is okay but I can't see why anyone would want to learn from him instead of Ortiz, Forte, Richard Turner or someone else who's been longer in the bizz then this guy. I think he just wants to make some easy money and I can't blame him.

JWess is not very good at the bottomdeal and second deal ... I think he should have practised those more before teaching them to others.

Whoops, I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that there was another thread discussing the same topic. You make a good point though Tielie. I think there are much better resources to learn from, but I was giving this guy the benefit of the doubt. I was thinking that maybe the demo wasn't doing his card handling any justice, but after watching/reading descriptions of the DVD, I have to say that it looks quite aweful.

The demos on his website defnitely look much better than the one for the DVD.

I think he is good for a 21 year old, and I guess it's wrong to compare him to the greats such as Ortiz and Nash since they've been doing this for awhile now. When I said aweful, I was simply basing it on what I saw on the demo. I too will order one anyways since I like to keep an open mind and I hope there is something I can learn that I haven't already picked up from other resources. Besides, I think it would be wrong to be too critical on a demo/description of a DVD.

Come on guys!!! make a proper review after you´ve seen the full DVD. THere are over 40 moves explained and the bottom deal is the only one move that looks a bit dodgy in the intro. I don´t know if he can be compared to the "big ones" because I don´t have the DVD but don´t forget that some of the moves shown by some of the big guys also look really awful (and they are a bit older than this guy). Of course, he does know that is difficult to compete against them and has produced a single dvd where not only he demonstrates over 40 moves but teach them in detail. Now a lot of people will come saying that this is to prostitute the business since nobody should produce a DVD if there is no enough new material on it...rubbish!!! gambling moves are older than matusalen (as we say in spain) and even the big guys have copied themselves withouth giving credit in this type of gabmling moves. It´s a free market and everyone is free to put out a dvd for sale. If you want to be fair, watch the dvd and write a proper review of all pros and cons...Jeff also claims to show several moves that are new so I think in my case I´ll order it to see what I get (if I can find 2 or 3 things worth the money I´m happy because generally I don´t find so many. He also shows a real game where he performs the moves...at least he seems to have taken the time to produce a full dvd...

Anyway, I wait for a proper review.

I have always found JWess very thoughtful and helpful on the forum. Judging from his downloads he shows enthusiasm and flair for gambling sleights. I'm definitely in the queue for his DVD.

Agreed. JWess has always shown the utmost in class in my opinion. I can't remember seeing a harsh word of his. I am glad to see that he is producing something like this. Not to mention his skills. I think he is great at what he does. Especially to be so young.

This demo to me looks better than the Richard Turner video. The audio looks like it will be better too. I am really leaning towards this video over the Cheat. Unless I hear something really bad, I'll be downloading this video this weekend.

Thanks for the kind words. It's feels good to see people that I respect, such as Paul H, tommy, Jack, and Satori vouching for my work. The project was done out of passion for the moves, and not to challenge some of the 'big guns' out there nor make a quick buck. If I was only interested in the money I'd be content just doing lectures which are more profitable and coming pretty easily with the current popularity of poker. It's more about accomplishing a goal and being remembered rather than 'cashing in' on something you love doing.
be well,

I haven't seen his DVD on cardsharking, but I really enjoyed J Wessmiller as Tarzan during the 1930's and 1940's.

I'm very interested in the DVD, but there's one thing that niggles me. The running time is listed as 90 minutes, and there are over 40 moves explained. That's a little over two minutes per move.

I suppose my question is; does the DVD show you how to do the move, or how the move is done? That is to say, are the explanations in depth lessons, or more on the line of 'and then do this...' as in The Cheat or the GPS videos? I ask because I'm not sure how some (or any) of the sleights can be effectively taught in so little time.

However, as I said I'm sure I'll get it anyway - I enjoyed Jeff's clips from his website, and it will be nice to see the moves performed.

Take care, Ian

I can say in person it is much better. The clips on expert magic were shot and edited by expert magic people. The clips on Jay's site are shot and edited by him and maybe Jonathan. Funny how he is better than expert magic at editing.

Wess

I have never downloaded a 90 minute DVD how long would that take? (I have broadband)

Or if I ordered the DVD how long would it take to arrive in the UK?

I downloaded the instant download and it is a large download (126 megs) Inside the zip file, the different sections of the dvd are broken into separated videos to watch.

Here is a quick review of the material.

I would say the descriptions of the moves are well done but more of an overview compared to what you may be expecting. He does go over hand position and specific finger placement for each move but he does not delve deeper so someone with no experience doing these moves (specifically bottoms and seconds) will have a hard time doing the moves from the description provided. One thing to keep in mind is that a lot of the moves are not beginners moves. You cant expect to have a good bottom or second without weeks, months, and even years of practice so keep that in mind.

The stacking section is very nice and he does go into some detail as far as specific stacking techniques.

The false deal section only describes his version of both moves (straddle grip) so you may not find much new info in it if you aren't comfortable with a straddle grip.

The false shuffles section is very well done. He explains finger position and cover for each shuffle.

The false cuts, glimpses, and hop sections are done well enough. Good solid material.

He does have a couple moves of his own on the DVD that are worth seeing.

The download did not contain the "at the actual table" section of the DVD so I did not see that portion of the DVD.

I do wish some of the camera angles were a bit closer to the deck as it would provide a more exact example of finger placement/ deck control.

Overall, I would say the DVD is a good purchase. It is what it is. It shows the moves, describes them, and it is put together well enough with good sound and camera. I would not suggest you purchase this DVD if your sole purpose is to learn false deals. That is the section that in my opinion lacks solely because of how difficult and how many intricacies are involved with false deals. You simply cannot delve deep enough in the time alotted on this dvd. His riffle stacking is efficient and nice to see so I would say that is the highlight of the dvd.
