I am iffing on putting this in my show. I don't do it now because I think its overdone. but I read in another forum somebody said that kids watch movies over and over again and never get tired of it. This is well said!
What would you say about magic coloring book? |

I like doing this trick if the kids are really young like 2-3-4-5. They like the colors. 6-7 I would use other tricks
STOP DROP SHUT THEM DOWN AND OPEN UP SHOP

The classics are called the classics for a reason.
Like every other magic effect, it's not the effect itself, it's what's done with it. Develop a routine that is different than what the standard routines are. Add various bits of business to it. Change the cover on the coloring book so the kids don't recognize the book. Add vanishing crayons, slush powder (paint), breakaway paintbrushes, bottomless paintbrush cans. Dress-up the child as an artist or housepainter. Tell the child that only one thing can erase the colors -- a stinky sock! After the drawings all disappear, say "Boy, that sock really *was* stinky!" Etc, etc. Let your imagination run wild. Brian |

I agree with Brian, the coloring book is a great effect! An empty book filling with pictures and colors IS magical. Kids see this in many shows which is why as Brian said you have to invent an original routine for it. If you have a unique idea that can be applied to the coloring book you should definitly use it.

Problem is, the magic shops have sold this to everyone, including scout masters and teachers, and it has been done to death.
Get a copy of the Mark Wilson course in magic, make up the stamp album trick. There is the REAL classic that the coloring book is based on, and you'll have something different. Mark Tripp |

If you have the time and skill to make a Stamp Album, another option is to make a Photo Album. Use pictures from your previous magic shows (printed off your computer) showing all the kids having fun, and you doing wonderful magic. Use a Print Shop program to turn those into line drawings, and then of course you have the blank pages.
It doesn't have to be a coloring book. Think of how the principle works, and why it's so effective with the children, and think of how you could design a new effect around that. BTW, I've had adults totally blown away by a simple Coloring Book. It's a great effect. Brian |

Well, for adults a very interesting concept is to do "three card monte" with THREE coloring books. They have to find the book with the colored pictures in them. Of course, knowing what we do, they can't win. I leave it to you all to think about the routine and when all the various changes happen.
As to skill, first, EVERYONE needs a copy if the Wilson course. Second, the book makes it VERY easy to build the stamp album, and several other outstanding effects. Mark Tripp |

Amen, the magic is not in the effect and it does play very well with young children. I've had little ones ask for it even if they have seen it before.
By the way, I use disappearing crayons especially when my 6 year old assists me and now the artist idea is very intriguing. Peace, Vinny |

Yes yes yes! Goes over very well with kids from 4-8 yrs. Read Silly Billy's routine from his new book - and also personlaize the book as per his instructions!
You can also buy the stamp album trick made up for a very reasonable price (around 10-12 dollar) from Hocus Pocus, Sammy Smith and Stevens (that's where I bought mine!) Saves a lot of hassle. Quote:

I do a routine where I dress a child up in a wizard outfit and breakaway wand (with accompanying business) because I can't make the coloring book work. Sometimes ad magicians we can get a little "analysis paralysis"---if it works, go with it; if it doesn't, go on to something else. For me, it works.

A number of years ago a VERY well known kids band (here in Australia) did the coloring book on one of their videos.
Well just about every kid in the country was now watching this trick performed on their T.V's on a daily basis, so when you pulled out your coloring book you know what they all said.... I just love the whole effect so much I couldn't part with it, so (as all the above advice has stated)I had to come up with a routine that would make it different. After a few trials and errors I settled on a routine that I'm still using today (even though that particular video isn't so prevalent now). In short, I say go for it. Good luck. |

Well, my final words are this trick is marketed to teachers, and I have seen it in several science cataloges...
...but if you like it so much you want to risk the wonderful yells of "I KNOW THAT ONE", then by all means, go for it. |

Years ago I was with Jeff Hobson when he was doing a cub scout show. He put the thumb tip and the silk in his pocket and I said "What are you doing?" He looked at me funny and I said "You are NOT thinking about doing that are you?" We then argued about it, and he went out, and did it...
... and EVERY kid YELLED "YOUR THUMB ITS ON YOUR THUMB". Needless to say, he left the stage a humbled man. We can justify just about anything. When I was young and stupid I kept my mouth shut and listened to Karrel Fox, who was my personal mentor, along with many others. At this point I try and share experience so others don't have to learn on their own... ...but some are just going to have to get that humbling experience. |

For a good tt/silk routine, which *proves* to the kids that no tt is used, see Silly Billy's new book, "Seriously Silly."
The method of any trick that has been used in exactly the same way for 50 years can easily be discovered by the kids. They can find books in the library that explain the methods, the see the exposure on tv, and of course it isn't too difficult to find "secrets" on the internet. However, if we were to stop doing all of those tricks, we would no longer be doing: Coloring Book TT/Silk Linking Rings Quarter from Behind Kid's Ear Sponge Balls Scotch and Soda (they've all heard about "trick" coins) Rocky Raccoon Miser's Dream Cut and Restored Rope Milk Pitcher Snake Can Egg Vase Etc. The following link is a list of the top three effects that kid magicians on this forum are currently using. By reading through the posts, you will notice that the *most mentioned effct* was the Coloring Book. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......start=30 If that many magicians, many of whom earn a living doing magic shows, found the Coloring Book overused, you can bet that it would no longer be a staple in their shows. But it's still there, and it's there for a reason. Brian |

I consider the old tired coloring book trick one of the highlights of my Birthday Party show. I wouldn't leave home without it.
