Try the Spyder backdrop from Laflin Magic, I believe they are the only distributer in the US. Pretty Pricy but worth the $$$$ if you are doing lots of shows. Pattrick

It is worth checking out photographic supply shops. For many years the magic club to which I belong in Northern Ireland used a plain photographic backdop that was held up by lightweight folding stands. The backdrop comes in different colours, weights and sizes, it all packs very small and is very good value. Of course, it is no match for the Spyder stuff but it is worth a look.

I use a Jim Sommers Backdrop Frame. It's 8' wide by 6 1/2' high. I can use it as a front curtain and move it behind the props just before the show, as a backdrop. It only takes one person to move the entire backdrop when it has the curtain on it.

I made my own portable backdrop system easily and inexpensively. I purchased a lighting tripod (10' tripod with a 4' "T" bar.) I had some PVC pipe cut into 3' sections that just fits over the "T" bar. My tripod is completely up in less than a minute. The T-bars slide so I can easily adjust my width from 6' to 8'. You can easily put two side by side for a larger stage. I ordered the drapes in 4' sections from an exhibit company which supplies commercial booth partitions for conventions. The drapes just slide on the PVC pipe. Everything cost <$100.

Ah....you want a GREAT Backdrop do ya?
Look in Barry Mitchel's book. I did and I can tell you that you will save a bundle and you will have a prop that is as "pro" as the spiderguys. (you know who I mean) |

Why not just a photographers background stand? Considerably cheaper than what you are paying on these spider drops, and much more known to the laymen.

I personally use a photographer backgrop system. They are 2 tripods that rise up to 9ft high and the backdrop bar extends up to 9.5 feet wide. You can systems that extend to different heights and widths. Then just buy a simple photo backgrop, you can get just about any color you want... or if you have crafy person in the family you can just go to a fabric store and pick out your own pattern and have someone sew hems and a rod pocket.

Exactly Damon, I just got a setup like that today! It even has a carrying pouch, and only cost $75 on ebay. Add some black muslin cloth and you're set!
