Tait - I'm sure Slim can provide more detailed information but I was under the impression that blockhead is the act popularised by Melvin Burkhardt whereby a nail (or any solid item like spike, drill, meat themometer or spoon) is pushed into the nasal cavity and then removed. It appears to be 'puncturing' the face but it is not. You are limited to about 4-5 inches depending on your body.

Mental flossing involves place a long thing object (such as a balloon, necklace, string, wire or snake) into the nasal cavity also but then reaching into your mouth and pull it through. The 'soft' nature of floss means that it doesn't appear to be puncturing the skin and since in comes through your mouth you can use any length of object.

But I'm new to all this and my knowledge is based more on extensive theoretical research then on the years of practical experience of many others here in the Café.

Gorilla Boxing was described in a great book about carnivals written sometime in the 1970s by a reporter who traveled with different carnivals for a year. The book covered all aspects of carnivals including the business side. I wish I still had the book but it seems to have gone south on me. Anyone know the name of the book?

Another act that I don’t think was mentioned are acts consisting of a single static illusion such as the Headless Woman.
