Just out of curiousity, how many of you who saw the Grand Illusions show didn't see the car appearance during the Lotto routine? I saw the show twice, once at the MGM in Vegas and once in Portland and both times, the car appearance didn't happen. Talking with other people who saw the same shows at different times, the car appearance did happen. I can't say I felt cheated because the shows were great, but I sure would have liked to see the car appear.

RTGREEN...you definitly missed out because to me the Car Appearance was the best part of the whole show, if you get a chance go see it again just for that moment!

Not sure if this is related to the shows you refer to but did he not have an accident with the semi which was carrying the car illusion and it was damaged?I thought I read that somewhere, correct me if I am mistaken,If this is the case it may have been omitted from several shows while being repaired?

SCott,
I belive you are right. THat show that he was heading to was Kalamazoo MI show and that was the one I was going to till the accident which our show was canceled till March the following year. I have heard the same thing that the car illusion had to be rebuilt. Maybe we both are hearing wrong but that is the same thing I heard. I was lucky to see it when he finally came and it was amazing. The other thing that we also have to look at is backstage space. It also depends if there is backstage space for the illusions. So don't know if that is a factor for the illusion not being in the show. Michael

Allan - you mentioned Copperfield's onstage persona had more bitterness or edge to it. Can you say some more? Is he just trying to shake off the build up of bad hair from years past, or is he genuinely going all George Carlin on us?
Would it be directed at other magicians, the public, the media? |

Sorry to hear that, rtgreen The car appearance is definitly the best part of the illusion. Be sure to go see him again so you can see it I saw him in Boston about 2 years ago, and it was simply amazing. The whole familly was all over me asking if I knew how he did them (which I didn't) for atleast a month. Last time I go with them

I have seen him the last two times he has come to Salt Lake City. He comes almost every year. I pay maybe fifty bucks a ticket. Its is a small venue at the University of Utah...no bad seats. The show is a little different each time. The car wasn't there the first time. It was the second time. The first time was a friday night. The second time a saturday night. He has a great show. I'll go everytime he comes while I live in Salt Lake. The show started on time both times in Salt Lake. The show went for 1 hr. 45min. both times.

He did the car appearance both nights here in Chicago and I have to agree with everyone, it was INCREDIBLE! I would definitely say it was my favorite part of the entire show..now if only I would have been one of the people who caught the giant beach ball and got to be a volunteer up on stage...

Rev-
I don't think he is going all George Carlin on us, but I thought his persona just had a different feel to it. Gone were the big smiles and the posing. In the shows I saw he did not smile that often and kept an almost serious tone to his patter. He seemed to saunter slowly around on stage and I even said to my wife at one point that the poor guy looked exhausted. It could just be the line up of effects he did here in Chicago, but it seemed to me a lot of the humor had gone from his act, and especially a lot of the bi-play with the audience. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of DC, love his work and still think he is incredible. It was just interesting to me how his character has evolved over the years. Then again, I could say the same about the eyes sitting there in the house watching him! My patter and demeanor has definitely evolved over the last couple of decades... |

I would have to disagree with the "George Carlin" reference. I saw him about 2 months ago and the show was fantastic. He was very funny, made tons of jokes, smiled often, went out of his way to interact with the crowd, and made a ton of refrences to the spanish culture here in Miami. He seemed like the same old D.C. to me.
Sorry RTGreen, but the car is THAT amazing. Definitly catch it next time, |

That is awesome to hear...maybe he was sick or something when he was here...I'm glad to hear that the performances I saw here recently are not indicative of his current persona... And I second that, the car is THAT amazing! Allan |

RT - no need to disagree with the Carlin reference. It wasn't made. Allan posted a concern that maybe the stage presence had a tone of bitterness. I asked for elaboration, and the mention of Carlin was as a reference point. Allan said he was NOT approaching that level.
I just don't want to escalate the discussion. I just needed a frame of reference. No worries. |

Funny...I was sitting right next to Michael Berends...oh yeah we were together. LOL! Excellent show, well put together, excellent material. Lance Burtons show with all the new additions if a real class act! Both are a must see. I don't think that seating matters at either show, great from all angles, but obviously amazing from FRONT ROW CENTER!!!
Thanks for all the fun Mike! |
