Fellow Magicians and Mentalists:
Rarely will I publicly endorse a product that I am using in my current act, but I must say that Neil Tobin's "Xpert" is simply PHENOMENAL! I highly recommend it to any working magician or mentalist. I received it today it is going straight into my act. I have already begun FRYING people with it. Some may be disappointed when first seeing what they get, but after realizing the understated potential this gimmick has, you WILL use it. So buyit! Use it! And you will love it. Kudos to Neil for coming up with this incredible gimmick. --Scott Kahn, MD

Couldn't agree with you more. I love it too. Here's a tip, during a performance I noticed one of my spectators had a coin purse, the kind that snap shut. Early on while borrowing a coin for a different effect I loaded his coin purse. When it came time for the coin flight I was way ahead. Nobody remembered that he ever had his coin purse out. Let's just say it absolutely killed. So keep your eyes out for those coin purses. They are rare, but it's worth it when you get a chance.

Hello,
If we are in a country where this item does not exist, do we have any altenative method? Because in this kind of effect, what Kenton calls "Labeling"(brand) is very important for spectators' psychological point of view. |

Get it regardless. Another member from Europe recently posted that he has been using it in his act and none of his spectators have ever questioned it. It's "just" what it looks like, what we in the states use all the time. When you mark the coin you just let them know that you are marking the coin, not that you are marking the coin with this special item you got from the states. In the minds of the public it does not appear out of place. They have already labelled it for you. For instance you wouldn't have someone examine a coin because this instills the idea that it could be something other than a regular coin. Seriously, I love to buy magic and have bought a lot of crap. This is an excellent product and From what I've seen of Neils' posts here at the Café he is a stand up guy.

Dear ellisd,
I understand your labelling although I think it's better to use a familiar and existent item to local people. Thank you very much for your thought. Sincerely, Jay |

Hi Jay,
Your country probably has equivalent items that can be similarly adapted. (But you'll probably still want to purchase The Xpert booklet.) Thanks to everybody for the kind words! Best, Neil

I also agree that the XPert is a great idea and a ubiquitous gimmick. It’s covert, yet open, devious, yet totally innocent. Get it!

Hi friends,
I also just can second. I perform several routines with Xpert for a while now and never had anybody questioning it, although this brand wasn't available in Austria that time. Now it is available and so it wouldn't be a problem at all. But to second posts above. IMHO one of the most mistakes performers often do is to assume that the audience is aware of the same thoughts as the mentalists are. The fact that you as a mentalist know that these are not available at your area doesn't automatically mean that your audience thinks the same way. Just have more self confidence. Just think of everyday situations. Imagine you are in a meeting and you see other people using this and you have never seen it before. In this situation you also wouldn't think this is gimmicked. It's just another special one in a world with millions of them!!! Compared to the bent coin routine with Xpert it's the coin that is of interest to the audience. So just think about this, it's the coin that is the subject of the experiment, point. Just had to say this. Hope I could help a little. Regards, Thomas Posted: Mar 19, 2005 5:31pm ---------------------------------------------- Hi again, Just wanted to add some more thoughts to make my posting above clearer. The biggest problem I see many magician and mentalists have is that they think within a show situation the audience automatically suspect every item you use to be gimmicked and fake. That's wrong. Only a wrong and false behavior of the performer makes an audience get suspicious about an item. Especially if it's a normal looking item. If you handle the item like you would handle a normal one just needed for marking a coin you need for the experiment then nobody would come up with the idea that this has 'special powers'. Cheers Thomas |

However, I have done the Xpert coin bending constantly for a pretty long time, and I have never, repeat never, been questioned about it. My advice is just to go out and do it! Who could actually tell one brand of this items from another, as long as the market (at least in Norway) flows over of similar items? Just handle it normally as the everyday item it actually is. Just my 2 cents Sven

What is the Xpert?!
Is it a secret writing device? A bending tool? A 'loader' (like the Billet Pencil or perhapes even those funny clip on things that drop a coin in to your hand, you know the thing I mean, the thingy, has a little clip!) Is it aaaaa.... well you get the idea. Or perhapes, is it all of the above? Why has no one ever said what it is (other than brilliant), if I knew I might buy the thing.

PsychoMagi;
What it is, has been kept remarkebly well under cover! To give you my comment; Buy it! What will happen when you get it and open the box, is that you will kick yourself for having spent the money on it. The next thing to happen, when, or if you understand it's real value and what you can use it for, is that you will kick yourself for not having purchased it ages ago. Any wiser? Sven

No! I'm just more grumpy now! I mean
Im not very intrested in bending coins or the card effects. The mental epic looks nice thow. Will it be a bit of a waste of money and a bit of a waste for me?

It won't be a waste of money. Trust me, I'm the stingiest mentalist when it comes to buying "new" effects. This is an awesome utility device even if you just perform the routines that come with it. |

PsychoMagi,
Naturally we can't divulge the nature of the thing here, that'd be silly.* But it's not all about bending coins, believe me. That's only part of an effect. You can do much more, and totally different kinds of things. Yes, it is a kick yerself in the butt kind of revelation when you first see it and understand it. Just drop the twenty bucks or whatever and get it, it won't wind up in your junk drawer. You'll take it with you wherever you go. *In fact, This month I had an honorable mention on online-visions' monthly Proving the Impossible challenge, where I used the Xpert to accomplish the effect. Problem is, I didn't realize they print it uncensored, so I asked them to pull it and they did. Yeah, it hurt to lose that tiny bit of fame, (they even pulled my name and everything) but that's better than being infamous for carelessly revealing secrets.
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.

Hmmmm... maybe I'm just bitter due to my recentish purchase of the Super Sharpie!
One last thing, will it 'help me' more with 'prediction routines' or with mind reading routines?
