I found that Silly's Billy's book's improved my approach , explained to me why some old favourites work and given me a heap of ideas (although I do think that not everything he does would suit every culture or area). I think it's a great book and if I had to buy only one book on children's magic it would be his...
May your fingers never lose their deftness,
May your tongue always lead them down the garden path... Regards, Whiterabbit |

Me too. I agree. Better than many books I have on magic period.
If you can't find them at your local shop, let me know.

I also recommend David Kaye's new book.
I finally got to see him perform at Houdini Days last year and I enjoyed his show. I have all of his lectures notes and still the book is worth it IF you want to perform for children.

This book sounds great, but I'm the guy who thought yes, The Art Of Astonishment sounds great, but I only read parts of it. Is it an easy read, because I'm afraid if I get it I will wind up reading parts and then going, not bad, I'll read it when I get some free time. That is why I like the cassets, because I can always listen to those.
You know you are a magician when you have boxes full of lecture notes you have never read, but still are excited about going out and buying more.

Upon further contemplation I really like the Colouring Book idea of ..."whatever you do don't do this" and then the kids go about doing this...you tell them to stop and of course they don't...i did this with my 4 year old and my son and he just about peed himself laughing...this is good presentational advice to include in a magic routine!

Finished the book last night. I only do shows occasionally, so I speak from the standpoint of a magic hobbiest.
The book was, indeed very insightfull and gave me many ideas that will improve my next show (for the children and the adults). Most of the ideas will not require big changes to my routines, only simple additions. I also highly recommend it. Mike

I love it! The coloring book routine is so simple, but I am a bit scared to try it out for the kids might not start to erase, but maybe I am just paranoid (is it an age thing)?

Even if you don't see anyone erasing, pretend you do. The moment you say "No, I said don't erase, don't erase!", and start running back and forth among the kids, the ones in front will think the ones in back are erasing, and they will want to join in. This will help get the ball rolling. One thing I've noticed during the past couple of shows I've done, I've had kids say they don't like all the screaming (when we say "Do you want to see if it's erased? Nah, I don't want to look". Last week, one kid in the front row even told his friends "stop screaming!" and he put his hands over his ears. Everyone ignored him. Yesterday, one little girl said, "There was only one thing I didn't like about the show - all the screaming." Two other kids next to her said, "We loved the screaming!" So, that may be a drawback for some. If it was loud "laughter", then it probably wouldn't be a problem. But because it's screaming (even though we're glad to see the kids so interactive with the show), some may not like that. No parents or daycare workers said anything about it, but a few kids did. Still gonna do it though! Brian |

Gosh! What a love fest!
A fellow magician on reading Silly Billy's books said to me: "Great! Now we're going to have a thousand Silly Billy Clones!" So in the interest of 'keeping it real." and encouraging critical readings of texts what DON'T you like about Silly Billy's book? |

If they don't work, then we drop them; if they do work, then we adopt and adapt. Nothing wrong with that, in my opinion. That's how we continue to learn and grow, and eventually develop our own unique "takes" on various routines and effects (and perhaps later we can even write our own book!). Brian |

There is nothing in the book that I didn't like. I thought it was insightful, funny, and full of great information.
If you are thinking about buying it, buy it from Silly Billy. I asked him to sign my copy and he did. You can read about it and order it on Silly Billy's web site - http://www.sillymagic.com |
