Whats up all! Right now, I'm currently rewriting and directing the play Macbeth for my school. It's going good, but I have a slight problem. In one part of the play, I want the psychic (witch) to vanish in a puff of smoke. I already know how I'm going to make her vanish, but I still need to find a smoke machine that matches the following requirements:
It needs to be portable and somewhat small. (Somehow needs to be concealed from view from the audience.)
It needs to give off a sudden burst of smoke with enough cover to allow for the psychic to hide under the table. (Only the top half of her body will be in view.)
Preferably, I would like for it to be reasonable financially, but I'll take what I can get.

Thanks a lot for your time.

Perhaps you should look into using a flash pot. It's inexpensive and should be able to get you the effect you are after.

Flash pot is the correct answer, BE AWARE, give the FP room for safety. As an added safety element the actor who is vanishing could be coreographed to be in a position of shielding themself in some way at the time of ignition. And it goes with out saying 1 emergency fireman on each side of the stage. Unless you have exiperence using flash powder its best to be on the ultra safe side, wouldn't want to go burning down the theater (ala ... now I forgot the rock groups name... 80's hair band... whatever) now would we?

A large shot upwards from a fog machine might be a safer option.

Normally the fog machine pours out at ground level, but I think you could rig it to "suddenly" shoot upwards. Havent doen it. So this is just an idea.

It lacks the flash, and sound of a flash pot, but that could be simulated with a strobe light and a drum.

If you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything.

A flash pot is your best bet, but if you want to use a fogger then you can blow it upward with a unidirectional fan. It creates almost a tornado effect.

I have seen used a old fashioned co2 fire extingisher spraying straight up. It looks great.
