When I was just getting the hang of mouth inflating, I was doing a gig at a baseball game when the battery died on my pump, this meant it was time to go, (a good way of cutting a line) but I was midway through a hat and well I tried. It was maybe 90 degrees out and I had been going all day, I got it, but all went black for a bit, the guy asked if I was ok. I shook it off, came to, and finshed the hat. Got a $5.00 tip for a $2.00 balloon hat and wondered if it was worth it!
It does get easier, It just takes work. I still say use a pump for gigs, hard to tell jokes with your mouth full.

I agree with all the recommendations for books and videos, and I'd like to throw in my 2 cents worth. Ralph Dewey has some great ideas in print as well as on video. He's reduced his prices too. I like anything Don Caldwell does although I'm still saving my Pennies for the book "Things that fell out of my head".
As for magic with balloons, I do a routine with a chick pan and balloon. If you are interested contact me and I'll give you the brief version. I only use my backpack electric pump for parties, it is so much more sanitary. For smaller groups, I sometimes use the standard hand pump, although that can be wearing on the arms. I've read pros and cons on mouth inflating and somehow I can't help but think of all the "germs" being blown into the balloon and could be released if it should pop. Fumbles |

Hello Zoom:
Save your money on the Don Caldwell booklet, "Things that fell out of my head." It was a huge disappointment! His videos on ballooning are truly remarkable, but his attempt at magic fell quite flat, I thought. There is a ton of padding in the thin booklet. Ron Reid |

Hi Ron,
Thanks for the heads up....I've read some descent reviews about it, but I've also been burned by those reviewers so I was hesitant to jump right in. Have you seen his latest tape? His performances on the earlier tapes were well worth the money as well as being able to pick up ideas for new sculptures. Thanks again, Zoom |

Hi Zoom:
I don't have his latest tape. I saw it advertised on T. Myers' website but haven't bought it yet. I plan to. I have Blow Hard With A Vengence and Lungs of Steel (I think that's the name) and they are the best ballooning tapes I own, and I own a ton of 'em. Caldwell really is brilliant when it comes to ballooning; maybe that's why I was SO disappointed in this book. Maybe you'll like it. But I can tell you this: The day I got it, I opened it up with much anticipation. I put it away about 1/2 hour later, and haven't gone back to it since. Ron Reid |

On mouth inflating --I got it in the eye the other day I'm ok, but it got me good. If you have ever had someone snap you with a rubber band, it is kind of like that, but in the EYE!
I think the small welt on my lower eyelid is there to remind me it could have been worse.

I got one in the eye about a year ago. I had to do two whole shows with my eye stinging and streaming.

Just thought I would put out there, blowing up with your mouth can cause damage to your jaw I believe. I got that from a class I took. I am sure over time your mouth gets conditioned to blowing up with your mouth. As for me, a pump is the way to go. You can purchase a small hand pump that fits in your pocket easily.
As for magic, I wrote a message about magic with balloons about 2 weeks back. I like to look at it this way, Treat the balloons like a piece of rope and do a cut and restore with a tt. Change a blue balloon to a red balloon with a change bag or for that matter, a handful of one color to another color. A way cool idea I saw a Christian clown do was, he took all these balloon scraps and made a fist and acted like he was melting them together, which made a balloon that was a large agate balloon like for heilium. I have tied balloons together to make like a large rubberband to do some effects. Another simple thing I learned was a simple heart balloon to a kid is magical. Blow it partial so it looks like a small balloon (otherwards the two points have not started to form yet). Then have a child to hold their finger up like they are pointing upward. Put the balloon up to their finger and finish blowing up so it looks like where their finger is it split the balloon. I like to tell them I needed their help, it so hard to blown in to make both sides so their finger makes the split in the balloon. |

I inflated my saliva glands once. I was in constant pain for several days. I was in a parade and inflated a few gross of 260s in about an hour. I now use a pump.

A friend of mine (who is a dealer) told me that it is a bad idea to blow up balloons with your mouth. There has been a lot of talk about this lately and Qualatex recently put a warning on the back of their balloon bags about inflating them with your mouth. It seems to me that if it's hard on the balloon artist and not reccomended by the balloon manufacture or the supplier, that it is probably not a good idea! A pump is always a better choice for your health and your audience's health.

Just want to add this bit about “health” and blowing up balloons.
I teach biology now and worked for 5 years as a microbiologist. I can not see how blowing a balloon up by mouth and giving it out is really likely to be of any concern. Any microbes (hate the word germs – and fail students who use it ) that are going to get out in to a balloon when you inflate it are as likely to be breathed out when you are talking. So no more health issues than telling jokes whilst using a balloon pump. If the balloon bursts the same microbes will be released. If it does not burst it is actually safer in terms of microbiology! The air inside will desiccate very quickly (due to the talk) and this will kill 100% of bacteria [given a bit of time] just like not giving you or I water would kill us. That said I have heard of (on balloon HQ I believe) a performer being sued for transmitting a disease via balloons – but I suspect he could well have transmitted the diseases if he had not mouth inflated anyway! We are far too cautious these days and have lowered our own immunity. But that’s an argument for another day. On the +side if you are in America and risk being sued (now that there has been a successful case) it is worth using a pump! And if you are working with someone else (or on your own) you can use a floor mounted pump which can become part of the entertainment. Stealing it off one another etc. But then again if you are in America and risk being sued for anything and everything why risk going outside? |
