As you are living in Japan, you can watch Japanese magicians on TV very frequently. You can find good tricks for lay audience in such programs.
Japanese close up magicians have been improving or varying many tricks to cope with frequent TV appearances. Hideo Kato P.S. Don't miss Mr.Maric's 3 hour Special April 4. He will perform more than 40 close up tricks. |

Please refer "The marquee says..." for TV schedule. You can find many many TV programs in which maigcians appear.
How they differ from Japanese audience? I don't know because I never performed magic for non-Japanese lay audience. (I performed for magicians many times). Hideo Kato |

First, perfect those tricks that your friends were impressed by.
While you continue to do so, you might want to invest in material by Doc Eason and Mike Wild. Both are bartenders and visit the Café. Do a search for doceason and Mike Wild, read their posts and ask for help if need be. Good Luck, |

Get DVDs with bar related themes. Should help you in crowd control, etc
IMO, performing for crowds in pubs, bar are way different than for those at the streets, stages, etc. This is more so after a few mugs of beer, etc. Very soon they may become rowdy. Best to get some bar performing tips cheerios

When you return to Malaysia contact me and show me some of the things you are going to perform in the Bar. I think some of us malaysians would love to be your "critical" live audience.
Many Blessings!!

Jack_is_dead, you have a great opportunity with the invitation from "paulmagic" in Malaysia to be your "critical" audience. Too few of us open ourselves up to honest criticism from the opinions of people we trust. This is one of the best things that you can do in your magic development. The key is finding people, be they magicians or not, who will look at your performance of magic with honest, severely critical eyes - not just a pat on the back (that's worthless). Weigh the information that you get carefully and apply it or discard it, as you see fit.
Also, I didn't realize that there was so much magic available on Japanese television - hopefully it's magic at a high level. I'm jealous, here on U.S. television there is little to no magic performance. Good luck!

Pick some very simple but relatively powerful tricks and learn them WELL - you don't need many - remember you're not performing to the same people each time so you don't need 100's of tricks just maybe 9/12 you do very well... and a few quick tricks to add to the mix... you're not performing on a stage so relax - take a deep breath and enjoy it...
What's on your list ?
catch you later

Most of all, have fun! This is a golden opportunity that many would love to have so make the most of it. I would definately take a look at bar magicians that have been successful for inspiration. Bill Malone and even Eugene Burger come to mind. It's not just about the tricks, its the performance and mindset.

Try to find a common theme to link them all together. As an example, I'll describe the show I'm refining for myself right now: All of my tricks have patter and presentation written so the story flows. I tell how I wasn't always a magician and describe the various things I tried to do to make money. In each job, I present a magic trick of some kind with a story that describes why that job didn't work out. Then I move on to how I used my magic to cheat people at gambling. I finish with how I was "convinced" to quit cheating. My closing piece is Gypsy Monte 2003. I hope that helps.
I need a stage name.
