Anyone know of any more rope-only effects (i.e. no rings involved) to do with Dean's Box?
Thanks, Mike

I haven't developed these for performance yet, but here are some thoughts
1)Unlink the ropes: a) instant unlink from phase I set-up; easy. b) unlink after ropes are truly put in the box linked(not as easy). 2) Two colored ropes are put in the box, but each comes out half red and half blue. 3) Wand is placed in the 2 side holes; a rope(or better string) is looped around the rope from the top trap door. Then the wand falls as the rope/string passes thru the wand 4) Ropes are placed thru side holes, then magically pass right thru the box and both end up totally outside box. 5) Although not quite what you asked, but: ropes are threaded thru a hole in a ball(or block of wood), placed in box, and ropes placed thru side holes. 6) Maybe too much of a stretch, but one could do a cut and restored string effect in the box Also, check for some "Spirit cabinet" routines, they would work nicely in Dean's box. I bought a "Miniature Haunted House" manuscript for possible inclusion, but it doesn't look like the kind of effects that I would like to do w/DB PM me if you would like some specifics. John I forgot to finish #5: The ball falls off the rope

Look into the manuscript The Automated Sefalalfia by Stewart James. It is Dean's Box on steroids and much of it can be applied to your Dean's Box.
things I've done with mine Solved a Rubiks cube Linked playing card rings removed ink spots from a handkerchief many spirit slate effects

And what book might that be?
Abbott's Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks for Magicians? A store in the UK is selling volumes 1-3 separately Does the Dover reprint contain all 3 volumes for ~$15? Does it have the referred to Automated Sefalaljia routine? or should I be looking at something else? Thanks John

The Dover reprint contains only volume 1; volumes 2 and 3 contain additional material. Sefalaljia appears in Annemann's Practical Mental Effects. I do not know whether it contains all of the material in Automated Sefalaljia. 0pus |

I found a pamphlet entitled "Sefalaljia, Number 2", by James. I thought Sefalaljia #2 was just a (single)ring on rope routine using a safety pin, or hook. I'm not sure if this is the same as the "Automated Sefalaljia", which I thought was by Jeff Busby. Julie: Which of the above is in Abbott's Enc. of Rope? Opus: thanks for clearing up the Dover reprint. I saw Sefalaljia listed w/the mentalism book, but thought that it must have been something different than for the Dean's box type routine. No? I'm interested in buy either the encyclopedia or the Automated Sef. manuscript if I can be reasonably sure of what I would be getting. John

Automated Sefalaljia was a cabinet put out by Jeff Busby with that routine. Sefalaljia by Stewart James is a short routine in Tarbell.

Sefalaljia and Automated Sefalaljia can also be found in the large 2 volume set of The James File.

Redundant I know...It is in the big James book, the encycopedia of Rope Magic, and also in The Essential Stewart James. It is such, meaning Sajafalia, a strange concept that it is hard to grasp until you work with it.

You could do blok-kord with one rope in the box.

I was very fortunate to meet Stewart James about, I think, 15 years ago at one of the Abbott Magic Get-Togethers.
It was on a side trip to Bob Lund's American Museum of Magic....Stewart was sitting on a bench right inside as I walked in...... Later.....at Abbott's....he did a Sefalaja Lecture.....MAN.....was that ever something... Now I own his BIG book autographed by him.........great stuff if you take the time to read it. On an unrelated...(well....kind of unrelated) note.....I had the chance to meet George Sands at Abbott's too one year....George spent a lot of time with me walking me through a hands-on version of his Ropesational rope routine. |

Al Angello:
Thank you....very nice of you. Magic has been the love of my life all my life. I will be 59 on Monday, and I've been performing magic since age 8. I even love being a magician more now than I did then! When my dad took me to see Neil Foster when I was 7 at an S.A.M. show in St. Louis.....I was hooked on being a magician forever. It has been wonderful to make so many friends and meet so many wonderful magicians and learn from them. As a bonus, I have a very, very nice library of magic books, many of them autographed by the magicians.....Vernon, Slydini, J.B. Bobo, and many, many more wonderful magicians. The first magic trick I learned was Paul Curry's Out of this World...taught to me when I was 8 years old by Gene DeVoe....and I still do it today...and guess what? It's one of the few tricks that people actually remember and bring up when they see me years later! That says a lot about the power of a particular magic trick, don't you think? Growing up in St. Louis in the 50's and 60's was really special.......we had a phenomenal magic talent in St. Louis then, and I consider myself very fortunate to have known them and learned from the best! |

A bit off topic, but Scott Alexander has a nice ring and rope Dean Box routine in his Midnite Show. He also has a surprise ending for a Dean Box routine.
