What he'll really wonder is what the heck happened to lightsaber battles after the third one.

I find what Jonathan said about becoming part of our cultural mythology interesting. Lucas consulted with Joseph Campbell when he began to develop the screenplay for IV. He wanted Mythology to be represented. All the classic archetypes are there.
Depending on How good the 3rd episode is I might be able to forgive Mr. Lucas for Jar-Jar Binks. |

So, how many of you feel it is important to watch this movie first, before reading the book? And how many would read the book, before watching the movie?
And why? Is it different with different series? Personally, I'm a "movie first" for the Star Wars series (although I do know a few spoilers), because I want to enjoy George Lucas's interpretation of his own story, before I read another's take on it. - Donald

This is SO exciting. Next week and finally the saga is complete!
Yoda isn't neccessarily a puppet in the future. He was a puppet in Phantom Menace but when ILM was gearing up for ROTS, they replaced the Yoda puppet in Phantom Menace with a digital one. Who knows, maybe they'll do it for the original trilogy as well-after all, The Emperor was replaced in ESB and Hayden was added as a Force ghost in ROTJ. As far as the lightsaber battles go...well Obi-Wan is an old man at that point and he propably hasn't battled that much while on Tatooine. And Vader, well he is mostly a machine. Quite not the gifted, most powerful jedi Palpatine was hoping to get on his side-a rather huge disappointment. that's why he wanted Luke-to replace Vader and be the apprentise he wanted in the first place. The original films don't neccessarily look cheap, they just have a more militaristic look to them. Which I find to support the story. When the republic blossomed (though we never see it REALLY blossom, as there allready was trouble present when we got to see it for the first time in TPM) the colors, the texture was much more rich. When democracy failed and military regime took over, all resources were channeled for war. Reminescent of nazi-era Germany. I am right there with Donald, the movie comes first and propably I will never read the book, but rather the illustrated screenplay. I have only read ANH, ESB and ROTJ books of which both ANH and ROTJ were rather bad, ESB being actually quite well-written. I am not much fan of the expanded universe, but books worth reading are Splinter of the Mind's Eye and Shadows of the Empire both of which take place in the era of the original trilogy. What really bugs me is that I have an invitation for a May 17th invitation-only screening, but my schedule conflicts big-time. I really look forward to seeing it, but it makes me sad as well. I have been a huge fan of SW ever since I was 7, sor for over 25 years. Now the sweet anticipation of things to come will come to an end. No more films to wait for-sure there will be a SW TV series but that doesn't have that sort of "glow" as the films have-for me anyway. The end of an era is nearing. But SW will live on.

Splinter of the minds eye was a great read! Did any of you guys know that Han and Leai had 2 kids and that Luke was seduced by the dark side?

I read the last few pages of the book for 'Sith'...let's just say there is a nice convienient gap between ep 3 and ep 4 to be filled in...by TV?
The interesting books are the 'Art Of' types...(there's a couple of them)...the sets...props and design for this ep is OFF THE HOOK! Doug

Have only read the script here, though did hear the audio book this time around.
Are there "books" ? As I recall from 75-77, Lucas went to conventions and asked folks what they wanted to see in a great sci-fi film. Naturally they wanted to see things from Dune, Flash Gordon and The Lord of the Rings, as most did not see much visual potential in the works of Ellison, and Lem. In the posts above it read like Lucas put in new cgi to backdate character looks in the first three films. Is this so? He replaced the force-ghost of Luke's father with a new image?

This is true. Much to my horror, Anakin's ghost was changed to look like Hayden Christensen rather than Sebastian Shaw. Lucas said this was so that the character would look like he did when he was a paqrt of the light side of the Force. I feel that by doing this, Lucas negated Vader's turn at the end as he would have looked like the old man he was if he was once again part of the light. Just my take on the whole thing.
I wish he would release the original versions onto dvd. Those are the ones I really want. Of course I could just transfer my tapes to dvd as well.

Unfortunately, original versions likely never appear on DVD as-according to the man himself-they don't represent Lucas' vision of Star Wars.
Changing the Force ghost in ROTJ bugged me to begin with but then I started liking it. After all, when the films are viewed in chronological order 1-6, new generations will immediately know who the third guy is. If there was Sebastian Shaw (who still is the unmasked Vader in ROTJ, sans eyebrows these days), someone would wonder who on earth that old fella is. The scene is such a short one and there's no dialogue to explain things, so having Hayden there works just fine. There has been lot of debate about the changes, but after all, they are Lucas' films. I don't like all the changes he has made, but for instance changing the Emperor in ESB (it was originally an elderly British woman in prosthetic makeup with chimp eyes superimposed on, dubbed by Clive Revill) was a good thing to do. It would've been confusing to many to have Ian McDiarmid as the Emperor/Palpatine/Sidious in all other films except ESB. Even ROTS will be different! The print version has been locked down some time ago as the prints needed to be done, but the digitally projected version has been worked on-changes that likely we will see on the DVD. Talking about extras...at least some of you have seen the extras of the Original Trilogy DVD boxset. Hearing David Prowse delivering the lines of Darth Vader was either pure agony or comedy (not sure which). And he has the guts to claim PUBLICLY that James Earl Jones dubbed Vader bacause there were no black actors in the film...

In the BBC TV series DVD set, "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", David Prowse makes a cameo as a gangster. If you listen to the commentary through the film. One of the commenters says, "The very first thing I asked David when he came on the set was, 'How come James Earl Jones did the voice of Darth Vader instead of you?' He replied, 'I 'ave no idear!'" (Picture that last part in a thick Cockney accent.)

As if Mark Hammil looks like a child of those actors... time to replace him too.
Atleast now we know where he got that whine from, his father. Sheesh, tell me about that tashi station. <g> joke about his whine from the first movie.

NOBODY has those). |

Actually my sabers are 1:1 scale metal replicas of the real props so they are just hilts, display items allthough wearable. Obi-Wan's is nice but I like the Graflex also (Anakin/Luke)-and that was my first saber after years of hunting for a mint condition, 100% perfect Graflex so it has a special place in my heart.
