In the Victorian seances, the medium was "secured" to prove to the sitters that the medium could not be responsible for the physical effects - instruments being played, furniture moved and so on. The Davenport brothers did this as a stage effect; they were "secured" in a spirit cabinet while things moved about. Oddly enough, they would occasionally perform escapes on stage, which would seem to kill the spirit cabinet routine, but no one ever seemed to put it together, or at least it didn't hurt ticket sales.
So you are planning to frame your escapes as the ability to pass matter through matter? If you can, get a copy of The Shiels Effect by Doc Shiels. He specifically discusses creating a new "Uri Geller" with the ability to do penetrations. This will do more to expand your mind than anything else I can think of. Yours, Paul |

Thanks Paul,
that's really helpful. The matter through matter routine is actually a demonstration used by Victorian mediums (and believe it or not, by the so called physical mediums of today), to show how the spirits can manipulate solid matter. The Victorians did it with a solid metal ring just big enough to fit over the wrist. It was passed amongst the sitters at the seance for examination whilst the medium had his hand (legitimately) tied to that of a participant, in a kind of handshake position. A cloth was then draped over the tied hands, and the medium passed the metal ring under the cover, and when the cover was removed, the ring was now miraculously around the mediums wrist - A demonstration that the spirits could manipulate matter & pass solid objects through other solid objects. It seems to be a "convincer," they use, but heavens knows why? Anyway, I know how the Victorians did the routine above, I want something more modern using tie wraps, because this is indeed the method used by modern day mediums. Thanks. Any ideas where to get hold of a copy of "The Shiels Effect" from? The Magic Books by Post website seems to be down. Thanks. |

Memory serving me correctly, there were many other demonstrations akin to this one. I do believe Mark Edward addresses some of these manifestations in his Seance book. In my experience setting up something like Rick Maue's DEMON RING is more than sufficient. If you've done the prelude to this bit correctly and established a solid psychological investment from your participants, the minute that ring falls off the chord and clunks onto the table the room will be filled with shreeks... I've been begged (upon more than one occassion) to not proceed with the Seance from that point it works so well.
Solid passing through solid is a "magicians trick" and in my opinion, this is how most people will percieve such a demonstration. However, when we create an intrigue, such as I've suggested with the above, we gain the psychological investment of belief that's required for selling this idea at a greater level. In my opinion this is where the real magick lays -- not in the effect, but in how we can weave the web of illusion into the mind of those observing/participating in the routine. When we do our jobs right, we solicit a knee jerk reaction that's about as real as it gets. We've startled them and awakened them to the "fact" that the spirits really are present and there is much more to the universe than what meets the human eye. Sorry, but doing the linking rings (as in Mr. Himber's favorite method)is a magician's trick NOT a paranormal manifestation. This can be said for 1,001 other effects. But, if you set the mood in the room just right, you could do the old vanishing Garter and have it appear on your hostess's thigh and people will be shocked, awed and amazed... in fact, that sounds like a great bit! Think I'll add it to my new show for this fall... |

All of it is worth getting but you won't find this one volume there. It was originally put out by Invocation magazine. It shows up on ebay every once in a while and gets HUGE prices (several hundred dollars last time I saw one). It's a great book, but I'm not sure it's for a lot of people. As it is more to provoke thought then about methodology. Hmmmmm, maybe I just want to believe that. Mark
