I was recently asked what I wnated to gain out of mentalism and my skills. Did I want to proove I could really do it, and be a psychic? To be famous? To be rich?
I think it is an interesting question. For me, mentalism is two things. Most importantrly it is my way of living. Witout mentalism and magic I would not be able to pay the bills. If I am making enough to pay the bills and lead a reasonable lifestyle then I am a happy guy. Mentalism and magic are also escapes. Once you enter into this world of magic and begin believeing that it is all possible (As Richard Osterlind suggests in his trilogy) then you are away from the restrictions and mundane every day life stresses. So I escape into mentalism and begin to re kindle the feelings of magic and the real magic that there is around us. The question of fame showed its head again. For me, I don't care about beign famous at all, I don't really care about maing a ton of cash. If I can live my life by doing soemthign I truly love and believe in, change people's lives and bring some happiness and wonder into them then I shall die a happy man. I just wondered what other people's goals were with all of this magic? Best, Kennedy

This will become a hot topic.
Though I've been nuts about magic for as long as I can remember, I hadn't performed it since something like 12 years of age. Then, last year, I started studying it with the intent of actually finding a job with it -- and, huzzah!, I successfully did so. (I even turned away from some valuable possibilities to travel with my wife on her assignments.) But now I find that I can't NOT do magic (or mentalism), even if it's just practice or learning new effects! Even when I'm without a venue (as I often am, since my wife's assignments are often 9 weeks or fewer) I'm grabbing every opportunity to perform and to practice. It's a disease, I tell you, an addictive illness. And I hope I never recover. *jeep! --Chet

Whn I was a kid I was the one who loved the witches and wizards in cartoons, I have been a Dracula entuasiast since I was a kid, it was the first Novel I every read, but I wanted to do what the charactor I read about did. I was always the one to arrive in a cloak to a fancy dress, or have a slightly different take on a dress code.
To me being origional and magical and always being able to produce and control what I want is me, it's interesting that it is labeled mentalim and that there was a way of people accepting it. If you walk into the room and people ask what's is the story behing that unusual guy, other say , of it's ok, he's psychic or he's a mentalist, it's almost like a disclaimer that says it's ok to be different. I literally have lived as a mentalist all my life, I was doing mentalism long before I ever learned a mentalist tecneque, and I have no care what others think as I am still me despite what any one says. Fame is important. It’s a tool that allows you to keep doing what you love to do, while improving the conditions of your work. It’s also a protective shield. Fame is believability. It makes things easier for you.
Creation only can exist if there is faith. The success and existence of all kind of artists or creative people depends of having someone, at least just one, who believes in them. Faith starts with you, but sooner or later you need more believers. Otherwise it’s impossible to move forward in your work. You don’t need anybody believing in you to be a great artist, but you need believers to make a living with your art. We live in very hard times for creative people. In all instances, the creative individual is being threatened by the indifference, prejudices and ignorance of the people who could make things happen for them. An artist (painter, actor, singer, magician, musician, architect) today means nothing. The “creative” power belongs to committees. Writers aren’t important anymore, editors and agents are. Painters and sculptors aren’t important anymore, curators are. Between an artist and the audience there is a long line of intermediaries with a clear message: “we don’t need you. You aren’t important. There are thousands like you waiting on line. I’m the important.” Any creator is a producer of content. Musicians makes music, artist makes paintings, drawings, installations, videos, filmmakers make movies, magicians make wonders. Content, today, has very little value, because to value content you need to have criteria, and that’s pretty rare this days. Your work won’t be judged by someone with criteria, but by a focus group. You will be judged by ghosts. Tell to someone you are writing a book. They won’t ask you what the book is about, but “who is your agent”. Say you are working on a show, on a play, or a movie, and they will ask “who is your producer.” Who you are isn’t important anymore. What matters is who is behind you, who represents you, who produces you, who believes in you. And people in our world believes in numbers. “How many people believes in you? Only you?... Hmmm... Next!” “A thousand?... Hmmm... I don’t know...” “A million? OK. Lets make a deal...” The only way to defend yourself is gaining recognition. In the order hand, if you endure all the horrors that come together with the desire of being an artist and working in whatever is your passion, and you survive and succeed, you will deserve that recognition. |

I used to have the ambition of fame, now however it seems that I just want to perform. To make a living performing mentalism is probably my aim. I wish to be able to live my life doing what I love.

On a related point -what do you want/expect if you are an amateur?
I recently came to the conclusion that an amateur existed to buy product! I was in a very cynical mood that day! /webbyla |

Well Webbyla, blending Craig’s logic with yours, an amateur exists to buy fertilizer!

Package some up with a couple of quotes, stick a $40 price tag on it and we'll make a million.

Sorry, I forgot to mention I am a total amateur.
I really enjoy this field (trees or no trees) but I don't know if I will ever have a truly active role in it. This lead me on to the question of the role of the amateur. I know there are plenty of examples of amateurs contributing to mentalism and magic but I have no idea of the proportion. This lead me to the cynical pov - that I only half subscribe to. I just wanted to know how everyone else felt. |

Im glad Kennedy started this post, I just finished doing a house party about an hour ago and I'm still on a natural high. Im not sure if I ever want fame in the way of being on TV, not at the moment anyway. There is so many BAD shows on atm I feel you almost have to sell your soul to join them. For some reason people think fame is the be all and end all, the best thing I ever heard was be content with what you have and you will never be without.

That reminds me of the advice that Mr.Wizard gave Tutor Turtle at the end of every episode when things didn't go quite well for him,..it went something like. "Be what you is and not what you is not" Regards, Derek

Enough of my silliness on this terrific topic and let me start by saying
Kennedy you apparently are wise beyond your years. I feel that thru the magic of my children I will live forever, and I’m sure that when the older lot check in here they will tell you likewise. Children are something absolutely wonderful to contribute to this world, Although I feel the experience is down a road that most here have yet to travel. As far as fame though, it is not nearly as important as touching another’s life and making a difference. That will last an eternity as fame is fleeting. Do you really ever think about what happens after the show? How many of us really give any thought to what did the audience take away from my performance that may change their life or influence them in a positive way. These to me are the important things,...That the people we touch will remember us forever. Be kind to others and help out when you can. That’s what makes a Legend. Regards, Derek Oh Yeah, I was almost famous: http://themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic......15&4
