Thanks for all the kind words.
Here are some reviews: Leo Bourdreau: I've gotten to know "Thoughts so Far" very well indeed. Hard to believe the author is so young. How were you able to cram a lifetime's experience in a mere two decades? Your theatrical background is evident throughout the book and the "hot spot," as you so eloquently phrase it, is focused where it belongs, on presentation. Your essays are well-reasoned and thought-provoking. Again, your theatrical background has served you well. I too use playing cards and I do it without apologies to anyone. It's comforting to see a young performer returning to the Devil's Pasteboards as a source of mentalism. You have many fine examples. My favorite card effects are Ultimate Connection, Mirage, Double Influence, and Pasteboard Lab Test. Two effects in the book are absolutely brilliant. They stand out from the rest and I wish they were mine. Of course, I refer to Cold Bending and Open Transmission. I recommend placing one of these two effects as the opening effect in the book. Grab the reader's attention immediately. Either one will set you apart from the many mediocre scribners in magic. You have a direct and very appealing style of writing, which will sit well not only with the pros but also with the armchair mentalists who wish to be entertained by the text. I hope my writing is as easily understood. Your use of the Mirage deck caught my attention. Shades of Spelmann. I will be replacing my Himber wallet with the WOW wallet at the first opportunity. I also caught the sly use of Larry Becker's Flashback in the Bookworm. Your Graffiti visualization is an excellent piece of work. (Expensive graffiti art hangs on my walls. Why didn't I think of that???). Chair predictions have always fascinated me. You have a wonderful example in Passing the Power. Needless to say, I love your "Thoughts So Far." It is obviously a labor of love from someone who knows how to respect and entertain an audience. Thank you for sharing your brainchild with me. I wish you much success with it. Paul Daniels: I always recommend that magicians read books, lots of books. When you do that you do not copy the performance of another magician, you see yourself doing the effects and you, therefore, have a unique slant on the effects you choose. If, when you read a book you find one really good trick in it then the book has served its purpose. Kennedy has written a book. I have found three routines in it that suit me perfectly and that I will definitely be performing. Another magician will choose differing effects that suit their style. The stuff in this book works. All you have to do is pick the items that suit you best. Michael Murray (Beyond ESP2): When it comes to creating effects, Kennedy's ideas are always fresh and inspirational. Within these pages are soem real gems, a lot of thought has been put into this work. Not forgetting that Richard Osterlind wrote the foreword, of which I am so proud and greatful. Best, Kennedy

I don't understand why some people are kinda "agressive" with Kennedy.
He has always been someone kind on the Café, always sharing, he didn't grow any hype around his book here on the Café (while many are doing this with their products), so just wait for a review if you need one, or buy the book (or don't) if you want, but no need to speculate in a bad way. |

Kennedy,
Best of luck with your book, and congrats on getting such a nice review from Leo Boudreau. Now do yourself a favor and stop misspelling his name!
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

I again have to echo comments made by many others on this thread already but I feel they are comments that have to be made.
Firstly, the fact that Kennedy is an unknown author should make no difference to anything from my point of view. Everyone was unknown at one point, and everybody has to start somewhere. Mozart wrote his first concerto at 4 years old - nobody criticised him for that! As a magician I am always, however, cautious when approaching new work - and spending money on new material by new authors - but I have been fortunate enough to work with Kennedy during the production of some of the effects in this book and I ASSURE YOU ALL FROM AN UNBIASED PERSPECTIVE - saying this as a magician, not as a friend - Kennedy's work is superb. Inspirational. Powerful MAGIC. $61 dollars is a small price to pay for a book that I have read, reread, selected material from and performed in my more recent shows - Ladies and Gentleman of the Café - I understand your concern at an unknown author releasing a book but concern no longer... Kennedy's book is positively superb. Enjoy LG

I saw Kennedy perform some of the effects from his book a few weeks ago and I thought they were great. I have not ordered his book yet but I will be in the next week or so.

According to Cafépress.com where Kennedy's book is being sold:
"This book contains "no filler" according to Richard Sterling." What better review can you get? And Richard wrote the foreword. I trust Richard's material and opinions wholeheartedly, so I'm sure Kennedy's book is brilliant. As far as price is concerned, it contains 30 effects - if you think about it, it's only $2 per effect! I've spent a lot more on material I've never used... Congratulations Kennedy. Writing such a highly-praised book is quite an accomplishment. Thoughts So Far is now on my shopping list... |

Yes, thank you tmoca. It's Richard Osterlind of course. I just copy-pasted the quote from Cafépress and it flew by me. Shame on them and shame on me! Unfortunately, Richard's name gets butchered all the time

Thoughts So Far is only available from my website. It will come direct to you, form the publisher,. which is in the USA. The reaosn is to save on cost. If I had to get them shipped out to me and then ship them to each person this would cost a bomb in postage. Plus I don't want to get back logged with orders or forget about people, like some other mentalists have been accused of. I thought I would play it safe and have people order them direct, so its all automated. I don't have much time to sort thigns like that out either.
It also soves me and you money. I hope that clears some things up. It only takes up to 14 days to get to your house in the UK. Best, Kennedy

This is a great book. Regarding the cost, I think it's well worth it. Remember how a short time ago it seemed everyone at the Café with a single half-baked idea was selling it as an ebook for $100? This book has numerous, complete, and thoughtful performance pieces. It's a very interesting read.
Also just a comment that some people may not realize, is that it only comes in softcover. Hardcovers are nice and last a long time, but softcovers will last probably just as long if you're careful, and they're easier to read. Not to mention softcover printing lowers publishing costs. Hardcovers keep book costs high in a market where production runs are small. At least it would be nice to have more options when ordering a book -- if it's a classic or collector's text, go with the hardcover; if it's a new person or you prefer printed word rather than an ebook, go with the softcover. Hi there,
meaning no ill will - but as regards the one effect I've read from this book (however incomplete that version may be) in "Online Visions" - "Open Transmission" It seemed to me to be (pretty much) identical to "Post-It Parapsychology" by Morely Budden. An effect which appeared in SYZYGY around six years ago, Morely credited Daryl Bem as his 'muse' for this effect. If the defence is - "The effect in the book goes far beyond what appears in Online Visions" Then fair enough, but it just means that the original Budden effect has been tipped by a cut down version of 'Open Transmisson' being posted up on the internet. I do not think for one minute that Kennedy intentionally stole anything that appears in his book. This is just to point out that one of the problems with the art is young(ish) perfomers "discovering" and publishing effects that they honestly believe to be new and unique to themselves. All with the best intentions and no malice aforethought. |
