In the UK it`s proberly different to the US in as much as the competition is far less,,,however the definition of a `real worker` to me is not the standard of performance skill but more to the fact`Do you make a living souly from your efforts. In this respect I do and have done for the past ** years, not just the streets but through any medium or person who is daft enough to pay me for the crap that I offer. I have worked Festivals (4 Seasons Events 18yrs)Steam Fairs (Great Dorset 22yrs)Fairs including fly sales at the Goose Fair for over ten yrs etc etc,,,have raised a family, paid a mortgage never got dole money. I offer no advice to anyone, cos anything I consider worthwhile I would keep to myself (It gets lifted when seen by other performers anyway)I don`t preach to anyone cos no one would listen to me anyway.
Having lived and survived on my witts most of my life the only thing that I have to pass on is,,be yourself, practise the art of Bull **** and do unto others as they would do unto you,but do it to them first. So am I a real entertainer,,,? What the hell. |

Hey there Gazzo,
if it's just a count that you're looking for then I'm more there happy to throw in my hat. I'm a full time professional and have been for a long while now. Lately I don't really have the time to do as much street work as I used to or as I'd like to sometimes. But I got my start out there and have performed on the street in several countries plus I've also taught a class in the art of street performing for a circus school. Although admittedly I don't advise very much on the side walk shuffle string, I tend to be a bit more of a lurker when it comes to these postings. -Matt (TK) PS- In case you don't remember me, I was the guy that swallowed a clothes hanger for ya in Boston a few months back. And if you still don't remember me then all I have to say is, "JEEZ... just how many people have done that for ya?!" |

I don't make my living from performing, so by Ken's definition I'm not a real worker, but I have worked the street, fairs and festivals some. There is no way that I can use someone else's script. I have seen you on tape, Gazzo, and what I value most about these tapes is that your individual style is so very different from mine that the taped performances make me think about timing, misdirection, doing naughty things on the off beat and so on, but there isn't a single word that you say that I could ever use. There are some performers with a more plain vanilla style where this isn't so obvious.
Most performers in magic begin by imitating someone, then discover themselves. Somewhere in America there are teenagers developing British accents... Yours, Paul |

I don't think you can realize your full potential as a performer until your show becomes a "mission critical" situation, that is, until you see each show as THE most important thing you are doing, because if you blow it, you will be out on the street, starving. It's true in almost every other field of art as well. You can play guitar in a garage band all you want, but until you get into a position that you are playing every night to keep a roof over your head, you only have a partial understanding of your art. I thank God for Pizza Parlors and Renaissance Festivals, because they gave me a place to learn. There have only been a few times that I had to take a day gig to keep body and soul together. It makes you really concentrate on putting together a good show.

I for one, am a talentless hack and have the video to prove it!
I have however spent quite a bit of time working the same crappy pitch in Harvard Square. This year entertainment will be my only employment. This does not mean that my act will improve, just that I may spend more time hungry. That is okay as I need to lose a few pounds. Does this make me a real worker? No. Is anything in my act original? Yes. Look for the things in my act that are not funny and lack any entertainment value. those things are my fault completely. What am I qualified to do? Gazzo has on occasion allowed me to push his trolley, count his hat, push his products, and pay for the steak tips. He says if I behave myself he may split a pitch with me and point out the numerous things I am doing wrong. I hope this happens this weekend because I am broke and need the money. And yes Gazzo, I will push your trolley. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! Back when I started, Gazzo wasn't even doing an act. Well, except for that one that they used to have on the old magicpitch site.
Cellini was around, but he didn't come down this way. Wish I'd seen him.

I work the streets whenever I can, wherever I am. Been doing it for several years now. Been in magic off and on nearly 20 years and done close up, stage, and parlor.
When I am busking, I have worked a few festivals, and pitches all around the Midwest and once in New Orleans (in rotten weather). My character and routine is totally unique because I bring the Word of God to all that I do, and that includes busking. I don't beat people up with a Bible, but I do entertain, and I provide a clear message about what it is like to have a relationship with God. And then I pass the hat My advice in this forum, is usually no more than what has worked for me. Whether I read it, watched it, or just realized it from my efforts, if works for me, then I am willing to share it, when asked. Am I qualified to give advice here? Definitely not as much as Koz, or Danny and James in LA, but hey, I have drawn a few crowds, and filled a few hats, and that might qualify me to have a little experience to draw advice from. Or, maybe not.... I still don't do cups and balls on the street, so maybe I am not quite there...yet... BroDavid

Oh Mark?? You mean that it is Gazzo that is putting on that Master Class in Virginia??
When I heard you say "Gazzo", I just thought you sneezed. Man, now I am going to have to rethink the whole thing. Too late, I already got the cups and pouch, so I guess I may as well learn how to use them... BroDavid

I just read Gazzo's initial post ...
Let me see if I understand, he's implying that people go on the internet and, whether intentionally or unintentionally, misrepresent themselves?? Or give opinions for which they have no experience??? NO!! NO!! NO!! It can't be. That's not the internet I know. Sincerely, Tyra Banks Supermodel This post has been filtered through MicroSarc, the world's #1 PC sarcasm filter PS: Please don't take this post as an insult to anyone, least of all Gazzo, who I hold in high esteem. I just happened to be reading this before my morning coffee and couldn't resist commenting. |

I would say this, if anyone cares (and I say this with nobody specific in mind) I would suspect that a lot of the folks who give "counsel" and dispense "advice" around here DON'T really do the things that Gazzo asked in his original post. Also, they probably AREN'T qualified to give any useful advice.
At the same time, who knows who takes what advice and from whom? If someone throws a question out there and several people respond, that does not mean that any or all the advice is heeded. I'm sure that anyone who is serious about their magic, whether they be pro, semi-pro or even a serious novice can figure out who knows what they are talking about and who does not. If they are smart and do their homework, there is a treasure trove of info available here, and we have the unbelievable good fortune to have true greats in various fields of magic that are willing to help people. And for no other reason that I can see but that they are decent people that love magic and want to help those that share that love. Yes, there are also those that are probably blowing smoke about their skill level, experiences and God knows what all. Don't listen to them, let them have their say and then dismiss it as quickly as you read it. If you were talking to them in person, you would probably smile, nod your head and when they walked away you would turn to your friend and say out of the corner of your mouth "Jesus Christ, that guy dosen't have a F'n clue." Bottom line, there is a lot of "advice" dispensed on this forum. The smart person looking for advice will try to determine who is in a position to give real, valueable advice. Listen to and consider the advice of those people, and let all the other junk fall by the wayside. That would be my advice, Vandy

You can always PM an "advisor" and ask them whether they have ever done what they are advising you on. Sometimes they have, sometimes they haven't.
I don't do birds, for example. However, I do know when a steal looks contrived, and I know how to correct it. How? Well, for one thing, I do body loads. The techniques are similar. But I'm not going to tell someone how to do front and back palms with cards or the interlocking fingers production, because I don't do them or anything else like them.
