Don't know if this is the right "category" but,
I have heard it discussed, and like the idea, of putting optical illusoins on props (as opposed to the traditional mock Chinese characters). My question is, what specific optical illusions work well. I would assume that you need the kind that are static, and do not require motion. I would also assume it's best to avoid those that relay of specific shades of color or lighting. Lastly, I would think you want those that are relatively easy to replicate. Any ideas. |

Are you interested in optical illusions as merely decoration on props or should they have a function as optical illusions as well? Of course anything is better than the mock Chinese characters
I must be suffering from a block of some sort as I can right now remember only a few optical illusions that fit your bill...you might want to do a google on the subject and see what you can find.

I know that this sounds a little negative but I think you should be careful not to confuse the props with "over-interesting" decals!
The audience should be looking at the prop (or better still, the performer), while a few nondesctipt chinese characters or swirls may be OK, you don't want the audience studying your artwork trying to work out what it is! I used to do a bit of theatrical scenery design some time ago and (unfortunately sometimes!) the first thing that you are taught is that the scenery shouldn't detract from the actors! |
