Hey folks,
my copper cups are now about 2 months old and they started to oxidize really fast. Is there anything I can use to stop them from losing their shine ? What do you use to keep your cups a real eye-pleasure ? Thanks, Philipp

You don't. That's the way copper works. I personaly think the copper looks nicer when oxidized - but perhaps that's me. Lazy as always.

I've tried a lot of things to prevent this oxidation and nothing really works for long. Bill mentioned car wax, the kind without an abrasive and that worked for a few weeks. I even had one metal worker say to use spray on enamel and that worked for a little while, but not long. Then I had to polish off the enamel.
If you like shiny I suggest brass. |

Rock,
thanks - Bill Palmer is a good idea - should have thought of him on my own. Ark, sure, the cups don't have to shine - but with those big green/brown spots on them they're not as nice to look at as they could and should be.

OK, I do have some advice after all it seems. Use Brasso, polish your cups. Then handle them every day, rub your hands over them. Rub them against your face. Do this for quite a couple of weeks.
They will develop a very even patina without green spots. Uhhhh, at least mine did |

Whit Haydn showed me a set of cups he had done some work on. They looked great. The main thing was the use of the wax to keep the patina constant.

Yeah, I rubbed them against my face. There are more oils on your face than your hands. Years ago I read a booklet on taking care of smoking pipes (I no longer smoke a pipe, I used to think it made me look mature) and it said that I should rub the pipe on my cheeks to distribute oils and 'cure' the pipe. Later I noticed that the patina on cups that are well used are more even than those on the cups of magicians that didn't use them a lot. So I figured it might be the oil.
The patina on my cups is flawless and smooth. Maybe it wasn't the oil from my face. I don't know. I can tell you this, it's a fundamental principle in Kung Fu that if you are learning a weapon you carry it with you as much as you can. You caress it. You hold it even when you aren't practicing. You literally form a bond with it. It may be psychosomatic, but it works on weapons and I figure it can't hurt. |

I let 'em tarnish.
That's the whole fun of having copper cups.

Just like your shoes, give them a nice polish before your performances.

There are a couple of schools of thought on the color of the cups. Some think that the cups should be bright and shiny. Others think that they should be dark and not detract from the balls, themselves. I think each set of cups has its own character.
Some copper, for example, is not very homogeneous (that's a clean word!) and it tarnishes in such a way that it looks like giraffe skin -- really blotchy. You can make that an advantage or a disadvantage. In any case, if you like a patinized cup, wax it to stop the patina from darkening any further.

If you don't want to use Brasso, lemon juice is a good substitute.

Philipp,
Brown = patina, good. Green = verdigris, bad. Please see: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......5&21 Yours, Paul |

If you add wax, to stop the patina to continue to... then doesn't the wax make the cups feel different? Or is it unnoticible to the touch?
Thanks, this is all great information!

You really don't need to re wax the cups often. They actually feel fairly normal. They aren't slippery, if that's what you mean. See if you can get Whit to show you those cups he brought in after the lecture.
