Hello, How are you, I was trying to practise the Overhand stacking shuffles taught in the "Expert at the card table" but I'm not quite good with the jogs, so I was wondering, is there any good riffle stacking shuffle? where, for example, you have the four aces on the top of the deck, make the riffle shuffle and the four aces are stacked in a way that when you deal out the cards all the aces go to you.
Cheers MAGO68

Yes, you would (simply) just stack the cards as you shuffle. If you want the aces to go to the 5th hand you would shuffle 4 cards on to each ace. Each one gets progressively harder because you need to be careful not to shuffle into your stack. The last one can be made easier by doing a zarrow shuffle of 4 cards on top of the deck. Now the only way that this looks good is if you can feel 4 cards with your thumb, so you don't have to look at the deck as you shuffle. If at any time it looks like you are counting cards you wont fool anybody.
However, if you are having trouble with jog shuffles this may be a bit much for you. Tilt |

Hi Mago,
Take a look at Darwin Ortiz's work, he does a lot with stacking a deck via riffle shuffles. Another alternative is the one I currently use, which is Jack Carpenter's method of stacking with riffle shuffles. It's a lot easier but just as effective. His Riffle and Roll is a one shuffle stack of a four cards in a five player poker game. Darwin has something similar but the difference is that the Carpenter version is a lot easier and it looks better since I can't riffle alternating packets of 4 or 5 cards smoothly.

You could always learn a bottom deal, then you won't need to stack at all

Stacking work is of particular interest to me and I've found a few good sources for information. There are some excellent descriptions of several card-stacking techniques in Giobbi's "Card College Volume 4". It covers overhand, riffle, milk-build, and pick-up stacks.
Alex Elmsley has a wonderful technique for stacking 4 cards in a 4 handed poker game called the "Just Lucky Stack". I learned it from Jim Swain's "Miracles with Cards" videos (it's used in an effect called "Poker Interchange"). The beauty of the system is that the action of the thumbs is identical for each shuffle, i.e. the left and right thumbs always hold back the same amount of cards. If you've done any riffle-shuffle work at all you could become proficient with this shuffle relatively quickly. J.K. Schmidt also has a book out called "New Card Control Systems" which has a number of very interesting card stacking techniques. It has an overhand shuffle stack that uses no jogs and is extraordinairly easy. One could literally perform it with no problems upon a single reading of the description. There's also a very nice riffle stacking system that prevents on of the biggest problems with such work, accidentally shuffling into your stack. Hope this helps. Paul Sherman

Leaning to stack in an overhand shuffle is about 1000 times easier than a good riffle stack.

Yah, the overhand shuffle deck stacking is super easy compared to riffle shuffling, but there is nothing cleaner than just shuffling the deck and getting the job done in one or two shuffles......I'm not saying that I can, but I know it's possible.....
There is an interesting little bit on overhand shuffle stacking on Peter Duffie's site. It's a stacking system using the overhand shuffle by Tom Sellers, but I can't seem to locate it. Pretty cool if you can find it. You don't use any jogs during the stacking sequence. If you can't then maybe you can contact Peter Duffie and ask him about it. Karl Fulves Riffle Shuffle Techque book is an Excellent sourch for Learning the Riffle Shuffle...it's a bit overwhelming at first, but just stick to it and you will catch on after a bit. ha....I found it.. http://www.angelfire.com/emo/neotronic/new.html torwards the middle of the page you will see a link that says download Tom Seller's Manuscript. |

Garrett DN is correct. If you are having problem with the jog shuffle, riffle stacking is going to be pretty much impossible. Also, it will take a long time to master it.

PS, here is a link to some guy rifflestacking.
http://briefcase.yahoo.com/garrettdn Look under stacking the deck. There is a vid of stacking in 4 shuffles, and a couple of stacking in 2 (which is basically for show, not practicality) |

Marlo's Riffle Shuffle System is an excellent resource. Also, Ernest Earick in his book has some beautiful work that was based upon Marlo's.
While overhand shuffle stacking is much easier, there is nothing cleaner nor faster than a blind one shuffle stack. |

There is also the option of faking the riffle-stack with Zarrow shuffles. I can riffle stack three different ways, but find this faking untimately satisfying, and I have no idea why.

Maybe because you are completely bamboozling them with a Zarrow shuffle? I'm still working on my Zarrow but when I've showed it to a few trusted laymen (not exposed it, just practiced it), and then told them the cards hadn't changed, they refused to believe me. There is a lot of fun in that |

Why would you show laymen that you can do a shuffle that does not mix the cards? Now every time you shuffle the cards they will think that you are not really mixing them. You should never practice in front of laymen. If you just want to show off, you should take up juggling or flourishes.

As I said:
"a few trusted laymen" read: My lady and my brother.. I don't see any harm in that, and technically my brother used to work with coin magic so the term laymen in his case is a bit of a stretch. |

There is a clip on Ortiz's site where he riffle stacks 4 aces to fall to the fifth hand in one shuffle. Plus, he does it all in about one second. Crazy.
