I would like to begin my reading show with the drawing board or the talking axtell book. I would like to find a song to sing along (interactively) with the puppet.
Can anyone suggest a song or idea I can look at? Thanks, John |

Not so sure on a song, however, I draw a book cover and then a face on the book. As I turn away the book starts to talk trying to get my attention. He states that his name is dick.. dictionary and we use him when we need to find the meaning of a word. He welcomes the kids to the reading is magic show and then introduces me as a books best friend. The music I use is lively, upbeat and fun and I usually use a jazzed up version of Linus and Lucy performed by David Benoit. It is great upbeat music that fits my style. Hope this helps.

Kind of what I want to do. I would draw a book on the drawing board or perhaps use the puppet book. I like the idea of interacting with the puppet book and singing a reading song to open the show.
Thanks for your input Kyle! John |

Most welcome John. When the books starts to talk and reacts with me, it is a very strong and funny moment for the audience. The intereaction allows me to have the book talk about what it knows best.. and that is that in books you can find real magic. It is also a fun way for the book to introduce me to the audience in a fun way. This helps meet a need of the librarian cause they do not have to introduce me at all. The book does the job for them.
I would reccomend fun and upbeat and lively music without lyrics if possible. This way when the book starts to talk, it does not interfere with the lyrics in a song. It works better for me in this fashion. Kyle

I would suggest using a song from a book from the library or school that you are attending.
Is the theme of your show just reading, libraries... or what. Also what type of character do you portray in this program. Who are you and who or what is the book or drawing puppet may help lead you to a song. We are lucky to have a store which carrys only karoake music (about any you could imagine.) about 15 minutes from our house. Find you and you may find many songs. One of the songs we use is the zyx song. (based on a David Ginn warm up idea. Harris

I always portray myself Harris. I don't change characters for different shows.
Like my friend Allan Hayden says: "Be yourself. Unless you're a rotten person then pretend to be someone else." I'm not a rotten person. But I know what you mean about a character. Just me. I approach it as teaching. My reading show is a magic show with a reading theme. It's a total reading theme however not just one or two tricks. So, most any song involving reading would work for me. John,
I was thinking about using a song that the kids all know already and are likely to sing along with...something like the alphabet song..."ABCDEFG...HIJKLMNOP...etc...now I know my ABCs next time won't you sing with me."...or for children of an older age you might consider anything by Raffi...let me know what you come up with...i'm thinking of doing this for library shows and using sean bogunia's ultimate sketchpad...draw it...it moves...it sings...and then I tear off the page and hand it to my child helper/special person/etc...for a birthday show you could draw a cake and have it sing happy birthday or do the long axtell birthday routine |
