For the past several months I have looked long and hard for the perfect (& economical) case to work out of during my stand-up performances. My search is over. Today I just paid $40.

I decided to search through the Café to see if someone has already shared this information. I did not find any postings regarding the company that manufactures these so here we go!

A company called Vaultz (Vaultz.net) makes several models that look like nice ATA Cases and come in various sizes. Several companies carry some of these cases including: Target, Office Max, Office Depot, and Staples.

I found the one I wanted at my local Staples. Details: (Black, 11 3/8"H x 15 1/4"W x 12 1/4"D.) Item number/details: (VZ01008-ESS Letter/Legal wfold-bk)

It is called: Black File Security Box. There is also another similar box that is silver and appears to be a little larger. It is called: Commercial File Security Box. (I prefer black.)

These have several great features that make them ideal for magic. The first thing is that they have a locking hinge that allows the lid to remain in an open position. It is designed to hold hanging file folders (both letter and legal sizes.) The rails around the inside edges could allow for some creative dividing or to aid in constructing a shelf. I am still working on this idea.

Some other pluses include: scratch-resistant textured panels, side handles for carrying, reinforced chrome corners and aluminum trim, soft black felt interior for added protection, rubber feet on bottom to prevent surface scuffing, locking for security. Also check out the chrome label holder on the face for identification. This little feature actually allows you to be able to carry and display a few of your business cards making them nice and handy. By having your business card attached it also might help you get your stuff back if your case is ever lost or stolen!

One of the features mentioned on Vaultz and Target's website states that it also comes with an organizer in the inside of the lid to hold papers, pens, etc. Mine did not come with this feature. (darn)

The link below is to Target.com and should provide you with details to several of these cases made by Vaultz. Even the close-up workers will find a few interesting cases in smaller sizes here!

I hope this information is helpful for those of you like me who have been in need for a new performance case that looks professional and won't cost you a fortune!

Yep. I like it.
The locks are a nice addition too.

I got a single CD case (similar to the double shown) at Circuit City and it is perfect as a wireless headset case.
I was unaware of the entire product line.
Thanks Kevin for the info!

I just bought an aluminum case at my local Walgreen's. My wife found it in the cosmetics section. Unlike some others, it has rounded corners, which is a plus. It is about 7in. x 10 in. x 10 in. high, opens at the top in two swing-out sections, one of which has two pivoted trays. The other side has no trays which allows relatively tall props to be placed inside. It is very attractive and sturdy. The cost was $19.99. BTW, it is called the 10" Ultimate Organizer.

Unfortunately, last night I proudly showed it to my (adult) daughter and she said, "It looks like a cosmetic case," which, of course, it is! Talk about puncturing your ego! Today I put some signs on it, hoping to make it look less like a cosmetic case. Anyway, I still like it.

Why not just use a leather briefcase? It looks more manly, and is about the same price.

Actually, I found something better: an aluminum toolbox from Home Depot. It is briefcase-like, has dividers and an insert tool-holder that works well for small props and stuff like TT. And, um, yeah, it looks more manly.

I demoted the other case to hold some dice cups and other stuff. I had also put some things on the first case to make it look less like a "cosmetic case."

Yes, I've used a leather briefcase, but I like the aluminum look. I do use a Samsonite briefcase for cups and balls. It also houses my practice set of cups.
