For UK mentalists who may be interested... Derren Brown appeared on ’Richard & Judy’ last week and did so well they spontaneously invited him back this week. He’s scheduled to appear this coming Friday (21st).

Will be interesting to see what he does this time!

No show! Plans for DB to appear on R&J a second time fell through, although he has a sort of open invite to go back on in the future.

In his first appearance he did three bits.

First was a routine with ESP cards which I didn't see.

Then he did a hands-off drawing dupe: turns to some actor or other who was also guesting, hands him a sealed envelope, invites guest to think of and draw anything. Guest draws cartoon elephant. DB invites guest to open envelope, and it's a cartoon elephant. Gasps of astonishment all round.

At the end of the show he did a propless mind-reading stunt. Invites host Richard Madeley to think of any memory from his past. DB stares at him in his Derreny way, and slowly - piece by piece - describes the scene R is thinking of from his past. More gasps of amazement.

Nothing new or unusual about the method, which isn't the point anyway, but DB's style and presentation are pure excellence, and that's really his best secret. This is the kind of stuff which lots of people do and it just doesn't look right. With Derren, the whole thing - the look, the style, what he says and how he says it - all just comes together perfectly to create true astonishment.

Derren Browns performance on Richard and Judy was immense. He elicited the kind of response Canasta and Geller achieved in their prime,AWE.His thinking is the future of magic. What a shame his specials dont quite cut it.
