I do the toilet plunger on the head routine after some sponge ball magic in the assistants own hands and the kids (and parents) love it.
I may draw the line if it's a full Diaper (or nappy if the local colloquialism can be used). I also occasionally do a running gag with the lotta water bowl with some yellow food colouring and use a beany toy on top of the bowl to blame the mess on. The above thread reminds me of a lecture I attended with Duane Laflin this week where he re-stated that we are entertainers - not clever magicians. If it gets a real laugh............ As entertainers, all sharing the unique joy of making children laugh, there isn't much point in fighting with each other now is there? John |

The reason why it is funny is because a nappy is the OPPOSITE of a clean, nice classy tophat.
HEAD --> BOTTOM CLEAN ---> DIRTY BLACK ---> WHITE MATURE --->BABYISH. Also, it is is funny because I am too STUPID to notice the different. No one is a ****head. |

Hey, do whatever you want (you will anyway).
And, if you want to be perceived as a jerk, remember -- it was YOUR choice. |

I can't picture myself doing that either but you'll know when the time is right.
I can see doing it and immediately being extremely appologetic and wearing it yourself afterwards. I don't know. I have all the "silly" wands available on my website if you have a hard time finding them at your local shop.

I better get rid of my breakaway wand, clatter box, bongo hat, plunger hat, die box, run rabbit run and a hundred other effects that mean I was percieved as a jerk.
The fact is that none of these things, or diapers/nappies, make you a percieved as a jerk. It is the way in which you handle them that determines how you will be treated. Silly Billy mentions in his book that he never gets complaints about his toilet humour! |

Hi, this an interesting debate.
Personally, sticking a diaper on someone's head doesn't fly for me. I've read the book by Silly Billy and think it's great. One or two things Silly Billy does I wouldn't do. I honestly think that in a small town you'd lose clients. The kid that gets up to do the magic with you, just about idolises you. It's funny to mess about with the volunteer, but let the joke be on you. I should note that I'm not against diapers, just diapers on the head...
May your fingers never lose their deftness,
May your tongue always lead them down the garden path... Regards, Whiterabbit |

People. Let us agree that it is ok to disagree. This is a subject where we each will have strong opinions and that is fine. It is ok to have a different view then the other. Just do not let this difference cause a great discussion to get way out of hand.
You must use and do what works not only for yourself but more importantly what works best for your audience and for the client who has booked you. Keep their needs in mind at all times and go and exceed their expectations of you by being professional at all times and solving their own unique needs. Kyle

I beleive that if I put a diaper onm someones head it would be hilarious. In NY people live diffrently.I do some shows in brooklyn and the bronx for real thugs like bloods and crips. The way they think is if they don't laugh, they don't pay.Simple as that.I have worked magicians who do magic but are to serious and they don't get paid.Stuff like that(u.o.h) is funny to these kids hey even me.Im still young and see what happens in schools.I don't know about the kind of things considerd funny in Utah.Just think of it this way, people in NYC kind of expect someone to get embarresed, look at the comedy clubs. If I went to Utah I would see a totally diffrent kind of comedy. In my case any magician in NYC who does the u.o.h in a show will get laughs.

If I saw this done to an adult or teenager, I'd laugh. If it were done to my 9-year-old daughter, I'd do everything I could to see that the guy didn't work again. "Silly Billy", despite all the claims that he understands kids, doesn't have his own and doesn't see what happens after he leaves. Many kids are sensitive to public humiliation, and although smiling at the show, can turn to tears behind closed doors.
Personally, I don't find what's so *&$#! funny about humiliating a kid. If that's the best way to find humor, it's time to find a new line of work. |

Deke you have like we all do have your opinion. But I don't belive you have to have your own kids to understand kids. I know LOTS of teachers who don't have their own kids and can connect with them better than their own parents.
I think if one performs enough and knows his/her audience you can tell what your audience (kids) can take. I can go into a show and with in 5 mins. of a show I could tell you who is the shy ones in the group are. Again, David put in his book that this bit is not for everyone. What more can he say!! It works FOR HIM. Ken |

Just a thought
stick the daiper on your own head. It might water down the reaction nut as I said it's just a thought in my show I brush a kids hair with a toilet brush - garuanteed a laugh, never had a complaint - the bookings are still coming in- note it is in context |

You know, reading this I really understand why so many people think of magicians in a negitive light.
OK, lets think, really think for a moment. You give the child the break-a-way wand, now what, EXACTLY, is the BEST thing that can happen? Everyone laughs at a child. Wow, aren't you proud? What is the WORST thing that can happen? Well, the kid can cry when everyone laughs at him, they can run and hide, they can say "You're making my stomich hurt", and yes, I have seen them all and I can go on. I do not care one wit the reputation Silly Billy has, putting a diaper on a kids head is simply wrong. ALL of the breakaway stuff is wrong, on two core points. First is the entire issue of our world of PC and the childs feelings. Now, save your breath, I dismiss that too, to an extent. However, lets use the breakaway fan, and OPEN YOUR MIND for a moment. Give it to the kid to open, he does (THAT will be a shock to kids who have seen other magicians), tell him to give it to you, IT BREAKS WHEN YOU OPEN IT! Now, really get this concept, ALL you can get from doing it to the kid is a laugh at a kid, at best. YOU ARE THE PROFESSIONAL! You should be able to do funny faces, "takes", and every other clown antic at the problem of YOU can't make the darn thing work for you. Which, my fellow magi, is REALLY funnier? Which is safer and will offend no one? Do whatever you want, its YOUR show. Getting laughs at the kids expense will get laughs; but they are cheap ones. Why not drop your pants and sit on the birthday cake. THAT will get a laugh too. PERHAPS, it is not about getting laughs, but HOW we get them that is the difference between a comic and a hack. The choice is yours. Mark Tripp |

Thank you, Mark, for your wise opinion.
Kenscott, with all due respect, you may be letting your own arrogance (or confidence, or whatever you want to call it) cloud your judgement. There is NO WAY you can know what happens inside a kid's mind, especially within 5 minutes. I've been a school teacher for years, so I know a lot about kids. I can observe them for an entire school year, have deep discussions with them, and still find fears and weaknesses they manage to hide. They can put up a very brave front, many times to completely collapse afterwards. No, you don't need to have kids to understand them, but it sure helps! I've watched the documentary about Silly Billy's family. I'm not sure the guy knows what's going on insdie his OWN head, let alone kids he's never met before! |

I know a lot of kids I have three of my own and no I am not a school teacher but a family entertainer with experience. Why is it that we can agree that we will disagree. I am not trying to sell you on the fact that you should be doing the bit. I don't do it. But yet it would not fit my style. Perhaps you and Mark should be writing the book instead. With the experience shouldn't you guys write your own book so "we" performers who are doing it wrong can learn the right way to do it?? Ken |

Well Ken, in point of fact I wrote for Genii for over six years. I have a DVD project with Camirand Academy in the can, and if I thought enough people would listen, I'd publish the book I have all ready written.
Your tone aside, I have a pretty good resume, and did 5 shows today at a school, as I do most days, so perhaps I might know what I'm talking about. As I said, its YOUR show and you know who you are or want to be. I choose to be the guy who laughs at himself, not the children. Mark Tripp |
