I'll get right to the point. I'm deaf. Could I be hypnotized? If so, how would you get me to do things? Would sing language work under hypnosis or would having to translate someone effect it?

Well, let's try it!
Look at my words.... You are getting very sleepy... You are getting very sleepy... My words are making your eyes very drowsy... In a moment my words will appear to be in Spanish... Y quando este parece vas a tener un gran emocion de felicidad y amor... |

You could try it on someone actually deaf. Also, you could have a friend put on something to block sound(such as worker's earmuffs) and you try to hypnotize him/her. If you researched it on the internet you may also be able to find a solution.
Stick to the classics,

I'm pretty sure it could be done, using a series of moving visual patterns. But I've never heard of it, among entertainment or therapeutic hypnotists, nor among therapists who work with D or HH clients.

I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work. I don't think hypnosis is necessarily dependent on the voice or any other aural cues. As long as you can give instructions via signing. But I'm certainly no expert.

The answer is absolutely yes.
Within the last week in fact a group of therapists at my hypnotherapy practice have all been doing hypnosis with deaf people and all have been successful. Most with eyes open all the time. The main part of this topic really depends on what one believes the hypnotic state to be ('state' versus 'non state'). Look it up on the net. Bobser

There are plenty of methods that don’t require the hypnotist to say anything, the “non-verbal inductions”, the better known being the handshake inductions, various pantomime style, follow-my-lead inductions (Dr. Erickson again) and rapid inductions.
Eye closure usually plays a big part to get them into a narrowed focus of inward attention. Obviously it would need to be omitted or used temporarily, using tactile cues to suggest deepening relaxation, etc. before getting you to reopen your eyes to follow the remaining lip/speech read and other possible visual and tactile instructions. Definitely be a challenge I certainly think stage performers(but not competent hypnotherapists) would shy from, amongst other things due to the difficulty in co-ordinating and orchestrating the whole group successfully in this manner. If I'm not mistaken both Arnold Furst and Ormond McGill have written on this topic in their clinical texts. I know that Arnold did work with the Blind as well and had some level of success, using the touch points such are used with children.

An understanding of hypnosis would be required for you to totally understand exactly what the term applys to.
First off, can you enter trance? of course you can, I'm sure you may have read a book, storys or other wise and imagined what was happening in the book well enough to not notice some things going by, or even the time for that matter. To be very very basic, in a relaxed state you focused you attension. If a hypnostist were to do somthing with you he would most likely devise a way of relaxing you in such a way that suggestions could be input via visual stimuli. Ruchard Busch made an excellent rweference to how people could relax by just looking at the stature in his office, it reminded me of how a lot of people have commented on a white Buddha statue I have. I'm not sure if I'm explaining this correctly, I'm a far better hypnotist then writer I hope that may have given you some idea all the same. H.W P.S I also suffer from a disabality that makes me that slight bit more resistant to suggestion and psycological approches.

Thanks everyone. I was mainly just curious about it. I was sure it was possible in the way that my mind works just like everyone else's (Sort of.. ). But the thought of reaching that kind of relaxation that is suggested by someone else is what I wasn't sure about. I been able to reach some stages of meditation so I knew I could reach it myself. It's just a matter of someone getting me in that state then making suggestions to me while my eyes are closed is what I was most curious about.

But remeber Ron, your eyes don't need to be closed. If they are closed the only system that could then be used for a deaf person would be what is normally known as the 'blow away technique'.
I won't go into that here as it'll just bore those who aren't interested, but if anyone needs/wants to know pm me. Bobser

Use prehypnotic suggestions. Take as much time as you like, through whatever sensory channels you wish, to clearly, vividly and completely construct, within your own mind, the end result you wish to achieve. If it's something you can act out physically, do that, also. Then, let that go, and enter your hypnotic, relaxation, or meditative state...all the while knowing that your prehypnotic suggestions / images / feelings will enter your subconscious automatically. At night our subconscious often dreams about the thing that was on our mind before falling asleep. With this method, your subconscious is impressed by the content of your prehypnotic focus. Do this frequently, until you start to become consciously aware of related changes that are taking place for you within your everyday experiences. Initially, as this new reality begins to manifest, you may be uncertain whether what you are experiencing is really the result of your "hypnosis" or if it's just something your imagining. But, as the changes become more pronounced, you'll realize that it really is working.

Hi Ron,
I always enjoy your posts. There are some very good self hypnotic techniques out there. I would gladly help you search, if you wish. As far a therapeutic hypnosis session is concerned, a competent hypnotist could give you pre instructions and then induce.
