Did you ever watch that series of shows on PBS called "The Joy of Painting" with Bob Ross? Remember, he was the guy who spoke in the soft voice while he painted and reassured you that it was OK if you messed up because, as he liked to say, "We don't make mistakes here; we have happy accidents." Do you remember that show?
OK. Last night, I swear before you all, the spirit of Bob Ross was guiding my hands. Maybe this should go in the Bizarre forum but it does involve cards, so I'll post it here and let the admin. move at will or whim. Here's what happened.... I was practicing in a local all-night diner when a young college student noticed me and we made eye contact. He was smoking and I asked him for a cigarette. He gave me one and this helped me to go into spiel about how I didn't have a quarter to pay him for the ciggie so I offered to "show him something scary." I used this to break into Eugene Burger's "Voodoo" and the kid was hooked. Next up, I opted to try my presentation of "The Ambitious Card" on him. I do this because I'm bad at the sleights involved (I think) and if I can pull it off then the door is open for a host of other tricks that are quite bad but entertaining none-the-less. Suddenly, I botch the job! I don't know how it happened or why but I realize that I've shown him a card that is not the selected card that SHOULD be in the position their card needs to be in to execute the effect! Further, I've just BURRIED his card in the middle of the deck! I've shown the young man the 10 of Hearts and he has verified it isn't his. Now his card is lost and the 10 of Hearts is back on top! Suddenly, as I'm starting to panic, I become aware that I am holding a little finger break in the middle of the deck! I take a breath and reveal the 10 of Hearts as the top card and say, "I thought I put you in your place!" The kid starts to smile. Looking at the deck with a frown, I say, "So who was that I sent to their room for the evening?" Without missing a beat, I flip the top half of the deck into my right hand so that the middle card (card on the bottom of that half of the deck) is now exposed: it is the three of diamonds. Judging by the young man's astonished expression and the small gasp that escapes him, I know that this is his card! I state, "Must be your card." He slowly nods, wide eyes on the deck in my hands and I remark, "Those two are in cahoots. They always try to mess my tricks up. Notice that they're both red and enumerate to the unlucky number 13....." And this sets me up to go into another numerical effect which is pulled off by sheer math and not with sleight of hand. As I was performing the next trick, I swear I heard the voice of Bob Ross whispering through the air conditioning, "We don't make mistakes, we have 'happy accidents!'" Happy accident, indeed!
There she was, a dodgy old prune in a tiara, rushing at me waving a sword. Do all knights suffer this whilst being made?

LOL, that's great. I was just two days ago performing for a friend and I asked him to think of a card, and then had him select a card from the face down deck.
The idea was that he should not chose his card and it proceeds into another effect where his own signature ends up on the face of his thought of card. I asked him what card he was thinking of and it wasn't in the deck. Happy accident, he acctually DID chose the card he was thinking of. I let him turn over the card and I had a miricle. I lmao after that one.
"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."
I won't forget you Robert. |
