Hi Roya,
I don't understand . . .What's confusing about COSMOS?! It makes perfect logical sense. 1. The spectator shuffles the cards. 2. To keep things fair, you push the cards towards them (face down on the table) one card at a time off the top of the deck. 3. The spectator perfectly separates the reds from the blacks (even thought everything was always face down and shuffled) I don't see anything that's confusing. To the people who are complaining about the "people" conditions for COSMOS, If you don't like involving many spectators, I suggest you try Let It Ride! Let It Ride! was designed to be performed STANDING UP facing ONE spectator. This trick is also included with your purchase of COSMOS. If you haven't looked at Let It Ride, I think it will surprise you. By the way, Karmilovich's trick is: The MAGICIAN separates the Red Cards from the Black ones . . . not the spectator. all the best, Greg Rostami |

Hi Roya, again you have your opinion, and honestly, I would die for you to be able to have it, even though I don't fully agree. When I buy this effect, I will not need a demo because I know what an OOTW plot looks like, and I know the effect. To be honest, I haven't looked at the demo. I don't believe in them. Some effects look great on camera, some don't, and I don't want that to make my buying decision. When I buy something, I ask, is this something I will use in the real world? So a demo has nothing to do with what I get, etc. You said that if there is a demo, it should be accurate.. It is a bonus effect, and from what I can see, it is accurate. Now, a solution would be fore Greg to maybe put a demo of ALL the handlings? I am sure he didn't for a reason.

Here is an idea that I was reserving for my own forum that I will tip here.
If you go back to the original post in Secret Sessions, you'll see that I started the thread by saying: "Effect: One or two spectators PERFECTLY separate the red cards from the black cards without looking at the faces of the cards. " The reason why I said One or Two specs is because if I HAVE to do COSMOS for one person, I do exactly the same trick, but I simply tell them that they are competing with ME. So what I'm trying to say is that . . . I become the other spectator. I've done COSMOS like this often; and based on the script (if you've bought the trick, you know what I mean) the trick plays out VERY well, with the same exact ending. just a little fyi, Greg Rostami |

OK, Greg asked for a review of the "bonus tricks." The reason I didn't include them in my previous review is quite simply because this topic specifically requested a review of Cosmos, not of the bonus tricks.
The first item on the bonus tricks video is a "follow up" to Cosmos. While it is a decent enough trick, it is not new or original with Greg--it has been around pretty much as long as the item used has been. Again, it's a good trick, though, and it makes a nice follow up to the Cosmos routine. The next effect, "Let it Ride," is also good and would be easy to insert into virtually any act, from table-hopping to a more formal close up show. The presentation possibilities for this effect are plentiful. As in my review for Cosmosis, let me be clear--I'm not saying that these are not good routines. They are. Greg does them all well, and by the way, he also does a good job of explaining everything. he is very thorough and easy to understand. That said, I wish he had done a better job of crediting--but then, I'm a bit anal about that, and it doesn't matter to lots of folks. To summarize, Cosmos, the follow up and Let It Ride are all strong effects, and I have no doubt that Greg gets a lot of mileage and excellent reactions from them. I think a lot of magicians can use all three effectively. However, I do not feel that "Cosmos" is the "Ultimate" handling for the OOTW plot. It's not the worst by a long shot, but IMO it's not the best, either. It is another handling that will appeal to some and not to others. The "follow up" will play strongly, but anyone who has the required item already almost certainly is already aware of this application. Let It Ride will also undoubtedly play well, but again is not an original effect, and many magicians who have been doing card magic for a while will be familiar with it. So for those who are newer to card magic, this video may well be a good choice. To those who already have a version of OOTW, it may well be a disappointment. I would have felt good about my purchase at $5 or $10, but at $20, I don't feel as good about it. It is well produced and well explained, but rather poorly credited. Overall, on a scale of 1-10, here's my rating Production quality: 8 Quality of instruction: 9 Originality: 4 Strength of effects: 8.5 Crediting: 3 Value: 4 Overall: 6 Finally, let me say this. It is important to separate the magician from the effect. My lukewarm review (I don't hate it but I don't love it) is my honest opinion of the product based on the merits of the product itself. in no way mean to demean Greg as a person. As I've said, I'm sure he gets a lot of mileage and good reactions from this material. I'm not trying to sound superior or start a feud. I have marketed a number of my own products. Some people loved them, some hated them, some were lukewarm, and that's OK. It's not personal. I say this simply because I have taken flak in the past (not from Greg!) for giving a less than glowing review. I also fully support the right of others to disagree with my review. 'Nuff said...

“If you have eyes, you can read the effect description” roya, The conditions are on my site . They are clearly labeled with a button that reads "CONDITIONS". They are also on the Secret Sessions thread. please name another version of OOTW that DOES satisfy ALL of those conditions? All the best, Greg Rostami |

Greg, why won't you just come out and say exactly what's going on? I'm not looking for method. And normally, I'd say you shouldn't have to share any details. But people are buying this for an improvement over the tried and true OOTW. The details are the difference! The details are the reason we'd consider paying $20 for a trick we all already perform. I don't think anyone here wants to be surprised.

Here are the conditions....An effect is teased/hyped.....The conditions sound impossible....Hundreds of opinions are formed BEFORE anything tangible is released....The effect is released to the delight of some and disappointment of others...We all come to the conclusion that it is not "quite" what we thought....Discussions continue and creators defend their position.
I am the first to admit that I can get caught up in these things as much as anyone. However, I was on page 1 or 2 of the original Cosmos post saying that this level of hype would inevitably set the effect too high, and that, in general, it could only get knocked down from there. New magic tricks are like movies. Regardless of the hype, they will be successful based on how good they are. Remember the hype for "Water World"? It stunk - so it bombed. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" got no hype, but folks loved it so it became a hit. At some point, you can't force people to buy a bad magic effect/book/DVD, and you can't keep us away from good ones! When will we learn? People can not really float. A spectator can not really separate shuffled cards by color. Etc, etc. Yes, we can try and create these illusions but it semms like some people expect REAL MIRACLES. Just my thoughts. |

Hey Guys...Did you think you were buying REAL magic from Greg? It seems like magicians here in the Café actually think they are buying "REAL" magic. Sorry, but it does not exist!

There are 3 methods in COSMOS . . . when I invented COSMOS I was only aware of ONE of them (Paul Curry's). I came up with the other methods on my own. Before I released COSMOS, I called Bob Kohler to ask him if he could name other people that I could credit for the other 2 methods. He gave me the name of Allan Ackerman. So I included Allan Ackerman's name in my credits on the video. In fact in the video you will also find me CONSTANTLY giving credit to Paul Curry.
all the best to you, Greg Rostami |

As for those people being well-known, well, aside for Ted Karmilovich which should be known, the others, I agree, I only know them because they are my friends or I have dealt with them (altough many people here have heard, at least, of Alain Bellon). Should you have researched for years before marketing your product? Again, what do I know? I'm bad at crediting so any answer from me (even if positive!) would carry no weight. Max Maven could answer that with full knowledge, not me You asked for at least another method, meeting YOUR conditions… and I told you I have one (those people incidentally were the ones from which I took some part of the methodology or simply just some inspiration and that’s WHY I named them). Probably, if I were Scott Guinn, I could name even more other OOTW meeting your conditions (or maybe not. Only Scott knows) but I don’t care. I wish you to sell tons of your wondeful Cosmos.

Greg, I think it is a great product. Good video, great instruction and great trick. I collect Out of this World methods and this is right up there with the best of them. Highly recommended. Definitely worth $20 for the entire package.

Just my opinion, but I think the means of distribution is hurting sales. It certainly must prevent a number of people from purchasing it. Without a broadband connection at home, downloading your effect is problematic.
Sure, 60% of Americans have broadband at home, but that means 40% do not. http://www.websiteoptimization.com/bw/0503/ And my understanding is that your copy protection prevents me from downloading the effect at work and then transferring the file to my home computer. Please correct me if I am wrong on that account.

That would be useless. If bad reviews are honest, hurting or not, they are valid. Your product is not the first which got good reviews and bad reviews. And it will not be the last. |

Platt,
I agree with you the details ARE the difference. COSMOS is different from previous OOTWs. And, COSMOS IS an improvement over the original OOTW. The advertisement is going to REALLY point out the POSITIVE and "fail to mention" the negative. That's what advertisement is all about. There are 3 tricks in COSMOS. Are all these tricks and their instructional videos worth $20? That's for the consumer to decide? IMO (and as Scott has so eloquently reviewed) they are ALL good tricks. Is there an EARTH SHATTERING method that will make you a GOD in COSMOS . . . well obviously not. But there IS a method that will get you as close as possible to REAL magic when it comes to this plot. take care friends, Greg Rostami |

I keep hearing the name of Ted Karmilovich being sprinkled in this thread. In doing a Google search, I find that Ted is the author of the infamous M.O.A.B but I cannot discover the name of his OOTW variation. Would members who know please be so kind as to post the name of the manuscript or book in which his OOTW variation appears. You guys have got me very curious about this.
Also, without having to read through all the many posts on this Cosmos topic, I'd be grateful to learn exactly which of the conditions that Greg lists does Roya (and/or others) think is not met when using one spectator (as opposed to when using two spectators). If stating this one condition gets into revealing the methodology of Cosmos, then I obviously don't wish to know that particular condition. However, what I'm trying to determinie is if the alleged "missed condition" is one I could live without. I know that there are many many variations of OOTW. And indeed, Greg lists many of them in his credits. What it comes down with me is whether or not IN THE EYES OF THE AUDIENCE is Cosmos significantly different from all of the existing methods or effects that are out there. I use an impromptu version of OOTW with great results and I'm trying to decide if Cosmos offers me significantly greater advantages (either in methodology or effect). Sadly, I don't think I'll be able to determine this without gambling $20.00 and then either being tremendously elated or feeling "taken again". That's the nature of the magic "beast". Sigh.
