Possibly make a dove pan(ish) device. Instead of the dove pan the object would look like a treasure box.
I don't know if this exists or not but a "Run Pirate Run" could probably be easly assembled. This obviously being a "Run Rabbit Run" effect. Hmmm... Any type of patter could be worked around tricks like 20th century silks, linking rings, even penut butter and jelly (being a pirate you get hungry on the ship and the only things to eat are penut butter and jelly sandwiches!). I don't know, my best advice for right now would be to work with what you've got. Shape the effects you already use into Pirate type effects. I hope this helps. SanCho |

What the heck is a "Barmcake"? Any danger that could be taken as a dirty word (like "cowpie"? Maybe "Barnacle" instead? |

Get a parrot...do some magic with that. A tip-over pirate chest. Stuff with gold coins.

If you are performing for older children a comedy version of Sword Thru the Neck (non-threatening, not dangerous) would be a good pirate trick.
I like the look of this one from Hocus Pocus : http://www.hocus-pocus.com/magicshop/pro......tem=5715 As Tyler mentioned in the post above there is a Enchanted Pirate Treasure Chest (tip over chest) on the market , available from various dealers . Here's one : http://www.thetrickery.com/?nd=full&key=5586 |

I think you need to really define this character and flesh it out a bit more before diving into routines. Let us find out just what this pirate character is like? What is his story? Where did he come from? Why is he doing magic? There are so many types of pirates, that fleshing out the character will help you to know just how to remain in character and how your character would react to situations in the show. It will also help you to figure out what patter and stories you will be telling. Let us know your thoughts on this character more. Give us some details.

In the book Edwin's Magic Volume II by Edwin Hooper there is a pirate-themed trick called Pieces of Eight , which involves a magic sword, stolen gold pieces which magically come off a rope , and a rope thru body penetration effect , combined with the gold pieces coming off the rope .
It's quite an involved routine with four children helping and costumes , etc. You might want to take a look. The books by Edwin are worth getting . Full of interesting ideas for children's magic . (and just regular for any age magic) . You might be able to find the marketed version of the trick , put out by Edwin's Supreme Magic Co. back in the late 70's / early 1980's . You could also make it if you had the book . The book gives a description of the necessary props: "You will require six wooden discs, about 5" in diameter, each with a large hole through the centre, and painted with gold paint . A couple of 6 ft. lengths of soft , thick rope (bind the ends with tape or thread to prevent them from fraying) and a realistic toy sword . If you look around in costume shops , etc. you can find some specially nice swords with "jewelled" handles. In addition you will need two pirate's hats. Suitable hats are obtainable from novelty/party/costume stores. Also a false beard and a black eye patch ." |

I agree with Kyle, flesh out the character first. Godd pirate, bad pirate. Old or young pirate. How "crusty" is he? (All pirates are a little crusty). What's his story, is he stranded here? Where's his ship? Is he looking for treasure?
And...Axtells Pedro the Perrot if you do vent...or the realistic Parrot is you want to appear to have a "real"istic bird... |

Use a change bag to make the pirate's parrot appear, but instead of a parrot, pull out a rubber chicken! I do this lots, and it gets a great laugh (extra tidbits include: breakaway wand, multiplying wands, magic chicken feather and wishbone, getting kids to flap their wings like a chicken/parrot, double-takes, flying chicken, etc.).

CJ Johnson's Book "More Shows More Money" has a pirate routine he uses for school shows which you could also do at birthday party's. On top of the routine you get a great book about selling your act.

I would love to give some great ideas, tips and suggestions, but I still need to know more about who his character really is. Until you really define your character on stage and to your audience, the tricks and effects you do may be totally off base and not proper for that character to be doing.
Is this pirate a contemporry pirate or an old pirate? Is he jolly or does he have a sense of arrogance to him? Is he a captain and scholarly or is he a shipmate who just has a lot of stories to tell? Answers to these questions will not only provide answers to what effects should be happening, but it will also lead you to proper storylines and themes and patter that can go along with the effect and relate back to the character so it all flows better.
