I would like to hear from you folks on your thoughts of Eugene Burger videos that are available. Include title please. Discuss the real world value as well as the production value if you would please.

As I mentioned in a few threads, I HIGHLY recommend the "Magical Voyages" Series (all 3 parts).
It is the one of the best materials I've ever seen. Of course there are many tricks very well explained, but the main thing I learned from Eugene Burger, was HOW to present a trick. I personally like very much the way/how he performs his tricks, especially his storys, are really good. He also gives you tips on how to learn tricks, he tries to explain, what philosophy can be behind magic ... Definitely have a look at these (all 3 of them)

My favorite Burger video is his "Gourmet Close Up Magic." This video features Burger in his Biggs Restaurant venue and presents a "real-world" look at the performing style he has developed for restaurant work. The production values are high and Burger teaches a few of his favorite effects (including the Schulien card under tablecloth, shotglass surprise, and Mullica card to wallet).

To go into more detail, Eugene is a performer who works for real audiences. All his effects are designed for laymen, though he will occasionally throw in a few things to fool magicians (see his take on the Cannibals plot, and Thought Sender which WILL fool you if you don't know the secret). However, his main goal is to provide a magical experience for real people. Therefore, all his effects are workable and strong. He's also one of the greatest thinkers in magic. You may not always agree with what he says, but he will make you think more about what it is you are doing. And that is one of the most important things you can do. The production values on his products is high, as has already been mentioned. He's a great teacher, and you will have no problem learning effects from him. He also goes into a lot of the thinking behind what he does, which I feel is important. So, in case you haven't figured it out yet -- I think you should get anything of his you can get your hands on! -Jim

I just got the DVD set of Burgers "Magical Voyage" and am very happy with all three of them. Even though I have read a lot of his works and have used his material it was great to see him perform and explain the hows and whys. Nuances!
Lots of effects that are very "real world". This is the first magical DVD I have gotten and I hope to never go back to vcr tape.

Hello , I was wondering if any of you who have the "Magical Voyage" set can help me? Does Burger teach his version of the torn and restored (Hindu Gypsy) thread on the DVD set? I remember looking at the description on a site and the 3rd DVD mentions something about an effect where Max Maven comments or calls it "Vishnu doesn't live here anymore," this is all from my memory so excuse me if I'm wrong. I just really like Burger's presentation of the effect with his Vishnu and Creation and Destruction of the Universe routine, if he teaches it in the set do tell and please give me your opinion if it's well done/taught or not, and if not taught in this set I'm pretty sure he teaches it somewhere else on another tape or book, can anybody help? Sorry for my ramblings, I'm getting drowsy because it's late in my neck of the woods...thanks!

On the Magical Voyages video, he only performs the Shakespearean Thread (a newer presentation for the Gypsy Thread -- it's NOT the same as his Hindu presentation), he does not explain the workings. However, the gypsy thread has been explained in many places. Just ask any magic dealer, and they should be able to point you towards a source.
Eugene's presentation, based on Hindu mythology, can be found in his book "The Experience of Magic." Again, the workings are not explained here. I don't have the book "Spirit Theater," but I believe he may explain it there. Someone who has the book can tell you for certain. -Jim

Thank you very much for your help JimMaloney and Fredrick! I really appreciate it. So JimMaloney, let me get this sraight, in Burger's book, "The Experience of Magic", he gives you the Hindu presentation but doesn't explain how the effect is performed? Would you recommend the book, are there any effects that are great to learn in there? Or is it more for information about the magical experience? Please do tell! Also, Fredrick, you mentioned Burger does an explanation of the handling of the torn and restored thread on a Stevens Magic video done many years ago, do you happen to know the exact name? Where can I find the video may I ask for the best price? What exactly do you mean by his Dracula routine and is the presentation as strong or stronger than the Hindu presentation your opinion? Is the Stevens video worth buying? Does Burger explain the handling well? Thank you guys very much for your help, and I hope to hear from you soon!

The Experience of Magic has a couple of fun things:
The Devils Deck, The Inquisition, A Bizarre Ritual. and some great lectures on magic in general. You have to understand that Eugene Burger likes bizarre magic (so do I) so his presentations are usually off beat. I would also like a reference to his Dracula routine, if someone has it. |

I believe it also appears on his Stevens video, where it was followed by the Gypsy Thread using the vampire connection (he used to bite the thread before he had some dental work which prevented him from being able to bite it. It was after this that he came up with the Hindu presentation.) -Jim

Hello again, what exactly is the name of the Stevens tape that Burger appears on, how is the quality of the tape itself and how is Burger's explanation of the Gyspy Thread, can I learn it from the Stevens tape alone? In short, is the tape worth buying, and where can I find it? Any help in this matter would be appreciated. Thanks!

When I lved in Peoria ,Illinois back in 1995 I made several trips up to Chicago to meet with Mr. Burger. At the time I was 40 yrs .old and had a very successful career in Gaming but was now ready to make a change in my life and start doing close-up magic for a living.I could relate to Mr. Burger since he also entered the game around that time in his life .I was more interested in learning the business side of magic than just tricks.Mr. Burger would allow me to tape our meetings at his home . I still listen to these tapes today. What he says in person is completely congruous to what he writes in his books. He has tremendous integrity and a very strong love and appreciation for magic. I recommend every book, video or effect he produces.Since those days I now reside in Las Vegas and perform at an extremely high end restaurant.Mr. Burger instilled alot of confidence in me and has also been an inner voice I will always have guiding me forever. Thank you Obi-wan.

Among my favorite magical references are Gourment Close Up Magic and Real Secrets of Close up Magic. If you do not own these, then you should buy these immediately. Not only do you learn some fascinating effects, but he teaches about framing an effect, which made me realize how to make effects stronger. He also goes through some instruction and a routine on using a Mullica Wallet, which will inspire anyone to start doing a non-palmed and magically strong version of card to wallet. David Parr gives a great tip on how to add a post it note to the "prediction card." They've mastered what they're presenting.
With that expectation, I recently received the Eugene Burger's Magical Voyages Part 1. I was disappointed. The spongeball routine is typical when compared to other published and presented routines. You have a spelling trick, that you could find in a dover book, and a Gemini twin like trick using money. Cutting ten is that what you saw on Bill Malone's DVD (I think Bill presents it in a better fashion) and finally you have the 21st Century Bill Transposition which is the saving grace for the DVD. This indeed is brilliant and you could tell that Eugene Burger and David Parr brought their heads together to develop this trick/routine. It seems that which made Gourmet and Real Secrets strong which is strong patter and memorable framing, made Part 1 of Magical Voyages weak. It seemed that the framing of the tricks was incomplete, and the patter either did not bring strong value to the effect, or ruined the surprise of the effect. In Gourmet and Real Secrets, the patter was sharply honed to be clean, misdirect, and create an even stronger revelation with the effect. I just didn't see that with Part 1 of Magical Voyages, and I'm a big Eugene Burger fan. |
