Hey everyone. I really didn't know which forum to put this in so please to those who have the authority to do so please move it to the respective forum it should be in.
My question is is that is music necessary for like lets say kids shows? Is it better to have music? and if so how do you do it? Do you bring a stereo with you? All help is greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot...Nick |

Hi Nick,
I don't use music, but many do. To read the various opinions on this great subject, check out the following link from the Little Darlings Forum: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=17 Brian |

Nick, it really is an individual thing. I myself prefer a little music now and then. I have seen some of the best kid show preformers do a show without it and I have seen great show that with it. For some, it's just another "setup" and they don't want to bother carring it or setting up the music and a routine. I think you may find this question about a 50/50 split.

I agree that it is a personal preference thing that each performer must decide for him or herself. You simply have to decide of music helps your show or if you feel it does not match your character or style of performance.

It's not necessary.
But, used wisely, it will generally make for a better show. |

I use muis cin my own shows because for me and my style and character, it fits. It also helps me to pace my show and it adds in for great transitions between other effects. It gives the audience a bit of a chance to rest so to speak.

I think it may also depend on how large a show you are doing. If you are doing a birthday party show in a private home, I am of the opinion that your show should be as easy and quick to set up as possible. The host family has other things to worry about than our set up space, electrical outlets and backdrop frames in their living room.
If you are doing a bigger children's show where you have room and time to set up, music can add to the feel of your show. Mike |

Some will say that music in shows will make a difference between a good show and a great show.
I always use music in my show and my setup is always self-contained so I don't even bother the parents. (So no worries for parents in my party, Mike ) If you really want to try a sound system, there are many recommended systems here in the forum. For a self-contained system, you can try this way: - Get a Florida Magic Sound System or similar. It's important to have an auxilary input and it must be BATTERY operated. - Get an EXTRA BATTERY for the sound system. - Get a MP3 player and wires to connect to your sound system. Rip and record the music into the player. There you have it. A complete self-contained sound system with very minimum setup. My sound setup takes no more than 2 minutes and it packs with only a space of 6" x 11" x 4". My MP3 player + wire is inside the compartment of the sound system. (Yeh!) With extra battery, you can even change on the spot if your current battery runs out. Take only 30 secs to change it. If you are sound-crazy like me (I AM CRAZY!), get an extra MP3 player in case you current one fails to work. MP3 players are pretty fragile so I advise to get an extra one. And, I have a mini-power station that has an in-built battery to run 8 hours of electric current so if my sound system is running out of battery I can plug-in my mini-power station to charge it while I am doing a show. After the show I will charge the power station in my car while travelling to another location. I don't even need electric point from the parents. |

I use a Honeytone Mini Amp available from Duane Laflin (and other places, probably), along with a CD player. Music adds a bit of theatricality to the performance, I think, like something special is happening here.
The music I use is whatever I like. I do my own editing from my CD library--film soundtracks and Christian pop songs--as well as composing soundscapes like ocean scenes or spooky ambience. Yeah, I have read about the issues of copyright. So far, I'm just doing private parties, so I call it fair use. I've asked people if the music was cheesy, and so far everyone says no, it adds to everything. So I think I'll keep using it. CSR |

I wouldn't think of doing a show without music...to me it's like watching a movie with no music. I have been using ACID LOOPS software to mix my own tracks. I can get professional results using this setup. Each Wav or MP3 has it's own track that can be altered individually...fade in, pitch, left/right balance, ect. My latest skit is nearly 10 minutes and uses more than 38 different tracks that includes music and sound effects...all perfectly in sync with my act. The music and sound effects gives my performances of "theater" like Carrie Sue mentioned. I COULD do a show without it, and I have, but the show just did not have that professional quality that I desired. I use a PA for large venues, and a Sony shelf system for my smaller shows. The Sony system allows me to play my CD and mix in my mic so no external mixing is needed. It's also 500 watts with a subwoofer for the greatest sound I could find with a system this size.

Being in Atlanta and a fairly new "Full Time Magician" I have some tough competition from my friends/competitors. I had done B'Day Parties for 35 years as a very nice hobby. Ken Scott (who regularly appears here and is appearing at the Magic Castle in May) is the undisputed Grand Master for weaving together magic, music & special effect sounds for a truly amazing performance. So does music add...you betcha!!
My portable sound system works fine for my needs. I do plan on getting the VSM (Virtual Sound Machine) to control it. Yours, Aragorn TM

The day I first used music in my show was the day I swore I would never do another show without it. Now if I don't have music I feel like there is something missing. Almost like I am only half dressed.

Music really enhances your character and the mood....at a very subconscious level for the performer and audience....best addition to theater ever!

If you have some tact and good music selection, I think it helps create a better atmosphere (and can cover some undesired noise from your magic devices, etc.). On the other hand, I've seen a couple routines (one was on a Dai Vernon video) where the music was being pumped way too loud to an obnoxious level. Perhaps for a stage show in a larger auditorium this would be acceptable, but for close up, a nice ambient moodsetting tone would be better.

Music adds another dimension to good magic but does not hide bad magic.
So I think music takes your magic to the next level but like anything requires time and patience to get it right |

Music can add so much to a show. Watch a kids Tv show and see how many times incidetal pieces of music are played to enhance moods etc.

It is absolutely not necessary. It does add a lot to the show. I use music in all of my shows.
In my shortest kids show, which is a half hour, I use 2 pieces of music, and one audio aided routine (drawing board).

Matthew you ar quite right. It isn't necessary, but like you I have music in all my shows, even when I do a Balloon Act.
Music can lift the mood if there is a dull moment in your shows.

Music makes the world go round! Personally, I like to use some music in my magic shows. Of course, I am a musician that played in a rock group for many years, and I still play live musical shows, so maybe that's why I favor music. I really do think it enhances and improves my shows. Having said that, I do not feel that music is a requirement for a good magic show, nor is it for everyone. Like most everything else in the world of magic, it is a personal choice. Do what suits you best!
