Hi,
Can someone tell me if this book contains the explanation of the things he does during the show OR what he does to build up a show? Thanks in advance. Bert |

PreThoughts contains an entire mentalism act including the script, effects, and methods. As with everything I've seen from Banachek, there is brilliant thinking there.

Steve Banachek`s "PreThoughts" combined with his "Psychokinetic Touches" can be in the hands of a creative performer an absolute sensational mental act, but this depends obviously on the personality of a very good performer. If you play for comedy, use his "Comedy-Club-Routine". This is a mental-item, which is hard to beat. Another Banachek publication is: "Psychokinetic Time", which is in the hands of a top notch performer an absolute sensation.
Ted Lesley Hello All, Nearly I forgot to tell you, that you NEVER should use material of another professional performer, if you don`t have his permission! Even if the trick or the line is published somewhere! Try to get the permission in print, because nobody can talk behind your back, that you "stole" the material...you are able tro proof, that you have the permission! I made a lot of friends amongst well known professional performers, as I was still a part-time-magician/mentalist many years ago! ESPecially TL

Some good words of advice there Ted! A wonderful way to remain respected amongst fellow performers. Integrity and respect characteristics that are often neglected. It is perhaps not surprising that the current 'top professionals' have little time for those just starting out.
Just playing devils advocate though: isn't the permission to perform implicit with the purchase of a method/technique from a performer (unless of course this is stated when purchasing said item?) Good to have you here Ted. Your years of experience and professionalism is much welcomed here. Regards Kris Sheglova

Dear Kris,
Thanks for your reply. I made it to a habit, to ask an author of a book or the writer of a routine in a magazine if I want to perform the trick for permission to use it. Regardless if I found it in a book or magazine. If the particular trick, which found my interest is for sale I don`t ask for permission of course. Any questions? Feel free to ask! TED LESLEY

Hmm...I'm known for being pretty strict on my ethics as far as using others' material, but I think that's going a bit far. If it's put in print, and there's no explicit restricion on it, then the permission to perform it is implicit in having purchased the book. Otherwise, why publish material? To show off?
If I want to perform it on TV, I would ask for permission in most likelihood, but if it's been published openly, it's a reasonable presumption that it's expected that, having purchased the book, I can perform it. I would, of course, ask for permission to before publishing a variation or improvement on a published effect, but that's an entirely different situation. My two cents, Andy

Would you ask permission to perform an effect you've seen performed and have figured out how to perform for yourself ? It may not necessarily be written down anywhere or published ( other than the basic principles being documented somewhere ).

Figuring out how a routine is done does not grant the right to perform it!
Unless it's published the performer retains all the rights. -Mahlstrom |

I don't think it's a matter of ethics, but professional courtesy. It seems Mr. Lesley is as acomplished at social skills as he is at mentalism.
Why not ask for permission? You flatter the creative minds, while building your network...I like the idea, but I like all of his ideas. |

At the very *least* you should purchase the manuscript for an effect if you work out how its done and you are going to perform it.
I 'worked out' Banachek's PK Touches (great routine) and purchased the manuscript not only out of respect but also because there were a few details I wasn't happy about which the manuscript did resolve. This is more important than it sounds. If you 'work out' something yourself then quite often you miss out seemingly insignificant details. Without these details the impact of a performance is impaired...which quite frankly, personally, I think would be an insult. It goes without saying that you should never perform somebody else's unpublished creation without permission. Regards, Kris Sheglova

Yes, of course if it hasn't been published, and you haven't paid for it, ask for permission.
I agree that it is a nice courtesy to ask if it's been published, but I don't think it's at all necessary, or expected. If I publish something, I fully expect that those who purchase it will perform it--that's why I publish it. Again, that's just my two cents... --Andy

Yesterday a fine mentalist from Las Vegas e-mailed me a routine using an effect I created many years ago called "Ghost Image. " Since he and his wife do a two person mental act he had created a variation that was excellent. He asked permission to publish it. I gave permission. He sent me a full draft of the effect. I noticed that he was using an antiquated method of preparing the cards. I e-mailed him the information he needed to bring it up to date. If he hadn't asked for my permission to to publish his version he wouldn't have dicovered that the preparation of the blank cards had been improved years after it was first published by me. It never hurts to ask permission, even if it was published 22 years ago.
