Back to ask the masters at the Café for some ideas.
I'm going to start working with two infection control folks from two different hospitals to figure out our internal policies at Open Heart Magic for performing for kids in isolation or reverse isolation in hospitals. Generally, these are the hospital rooms where you gown, mask and glove up to go inside and visit. Either visitors can catch something and potentially pass it on or the patients can catch something due to their weakened immune systems from chemotherapy, for example. Here's the challenge. I'm looking for trick concepts that are interactive either physically or mentally/emotionally for walk-around magic. The interactive nature of the magic is very important. Also, these tricks/routines have to be able to be performed with rubber gloves and a disposable hospital gown and the props have to be able to be alcohol swabbed before and after the performance. Cards are out. I'm looking for two age categories. The first is children four to 4-10 and the second 11 up to adult. These are just rough categories. My ideas so far: Greg Wilson's Questionable Trick (transposition using dime/penny) Hotrod Coin vanish and coin from ear Coin through sterilized cloth. Possibly spongeballs using a wadded up sterilized cloth/napkin. I fear using a [ for coinwork may not work due to moisture from the alcohol swab. By the way, the swab is more of a large sheet of alcohol soaked cloth encased in a small packet individually. Ideas? Thanks for your past suggestions and for these as well. My Best, Mike |

If you put anything in their hand make sure that you steralize it before and after. Also make sure that you can do the sleights while wearing gloves and that you can deliver your patter while wearing a mask. There is a video out that has tricks using items that you would find at a hospital/doctors office. I don't know the name of the tape off the top of my head but you migh want to check that out. Crazy man's handcuffs might be cool. After you do CMH you could teach the younger kids the jumping band thing.

Leeman might be referring to "SideFX" from Corporate FX and Magic Smith...

Thanks for the ideas.
We've been doing magic in hospitals on a weekly basis for about 18 months. I picked up Side-Fx and while it's a volume that would be strong for a doctor in his office that makes use of typical medical props, it doesn't quite fit our specific need for interactive magic bedside and more importantly utilizing items that can be cleaned with alcohol. Our purpose is more to empower through engagement with magic being used a tool for interaction rather than to entertain through a performance. It's a Child Life hospital approach to normalize a child's psycho-social environment through positive engagement rather than that of typical playroom diversion through child magic show performance, which indeed has it's benefits as well. I only know this because we have a very active and brilliant Child Life Director on our Board who was key to combining the close-up interactive magic and hospital child life ideas. We're not sure if she put her chocolate in my peanut butter or I put by pb in her chocolate, but I think the results are real special but we're still learning. For others it may be easier to consider this request as "what interactive magic uses items that are solid and non-porous and/or plastic or metal?" instead of "what magic could be performed in hospitals?" It's more of a props material question rather than a performance location question. |

How about using ropes and silks, torn and restored napkin, hat tear, or some mentalism.

A ball vase could work, along with hotrod there are a number of paddle effects, take a look at the two in the hand one in the pocket routine using nuts & bolts from the doc eason tapes.

Hi Mike,
Not sure if this helps, but a couple come to mind; AXTELL'S DRAWING BOARD (ask child to help name the parts of the face as you draw them, i.e., nose, ears, hair, etc.... not exactly bedside, but maybe the foot of the bed?) STARKLE by Dan Harlan (great napkin tear with a positive storyline, and... the child ends up holding a star in hand to make a wish upon) Dave
One good thing about being wrong...
Is the pleasure it brings to others. |

Could you use KEM or some other all-plastic card? Look into various Tenyo props, they're generally all plastic and metal. Rubberbands should work well. Maybe something with magnets? Good luck.

I put in a second vote for some mentalism. It would work perfectly for those conditions provided you could come up w/ plots that would be entertaining for the age group...

Slydiinis' Paperballs Over the Head is an awesome effect and could easily be used with items found around a hospital. If you don't have The Magic of Slydini, or Slydini Encores, or The Annotated Slydini, then pick up Tony Clarks Timing is Everything Video or DVD.
Rubberband magic maybe performed......Elastrix 2 by Joel Rindfleish has a lot of EXCELLENT rubberband magic that fooled the hell outta me when I first saw it. No beginner magic like the Crazy Mans Handcuffs..... Both are worth your consideration, Eric Jones Prestidigitator

Coin through Rubber Glove? Like the old trick but just use the glove. If you check out Mark Sichter he has lots of hospital/dentistry themed effects.

Will Floating Bill work? I am not sure whether or not you can bring I.T. into the room. But I am thinking, you can use this trick to encourage the kids or the adult, coz you might have patter like "believe in yourself", "Trust yourself", "Be confident", then the bill floats.

Excellent ideas. I needed some outside influence to consider something fresh. Spectacular! Keep them coming as we'll start to work on this program in a couple of weeks. Thanks again.
