It as been interesting reading what the members in here think about what is real and what is not.
Even what is truth and what is not. And what method is being used at which particular time. This is advice to all of the persons in here who honestly believe they are, or would like to finally become, a master mentalist; Become a master of 'lying' (I apologise for that word but it does save time my sweet ones). Or rather: become a master of lying through 'misrepresentation' and 'ommittance'. And this has to be in your everyday lives with friends and loved ones (obviously I am speaking 'only' in the realms of mentalism). I say this because many times when I explain how I accomplish a thing I do so by 'always' misrepresenting a 'part' of the method, ie whether or not it really was done by NLP or hypnosis. Or omitting the 'smallest' word or line in the explanation. Or even the boldest of all like the 'absolute lie', such as; 'I never use stooges or actors or third parties,' etc (which of course are fundamental for actual 'miracles'). If you don't take this advice I'm sure you'll still do very well. However, if you do, then the miracles 'will' appear. baker street. |

Baker, I agree entirely and have withheld all sorts of things in material I have let into print. From presentation ploys to basic theory. Why? Good question.
I want the SECRETS to remain private and in trust for use as private currency in this community, not as comoditiy or gossip. Anyone who has read my material can ask the right questions if they choose. What they get from the material directly is exaclty as described and is a working tool or routine though. What is held back is something you have to want or desire before it makes sense to discuss IMHO.

Good heavens.
The assertion that 'lying' is essential off-stage is problematic. Can we posit lying in the broader category of 'dishonesty'? If I am supposed to lie to my 'loved ones' as you say I may have to have a little weep, at the very least. I once lied to my daughter-in-law on a regretful occasion when I described her as 'slim-hipped'. I never fully forgave myself, and many years later she sadly drowned - in a mixed fruit salad at a food-based family gathering. I feel it may have partially been my fault. Secondly, I have a question - Have you ever performed 'Smoke' in a room with a carpet?? I have. Completely ruined the carpet and my wife has left me as a result. I'm considering giving up mentalism all together because of the ill fortune it's brought me. Sometimes I just want to pack up trunk, sling it in the old Chevy, and *** off to the one place I feel truly accepted. - Telford. (Near Birmingham). Someone pull me back into the swing of things. Loving regards to the entire forum. 'Pasq'.

Are you being good? Is Santa gonna give you presents or just a lump of coal? Will the great pumpkin appear? Will the Easter rabbit deliver?
Unless you want to ask and have to answer some really tough questions... better hope some lies stay unchallenged.

Actually 'Pasq' 'Jonathon is making perfect sense.
Rather it is your hackneyed formation of the English language that shows your lack of an 'Oxon' education, such as On 2005-04-16 18:57, Pasq wrote: Quote:

What?!?
Baker Street, Jonathan was suggesting - 1. I could select my own nouns 2. They would be synonymous with his. 3. The meaning would be static. For a sounder grasp of semiotics and philosophy of language try - Wittgenstein & Umberto Eco. Dry Regards. xx

Perhaps I was a bit cryptic.
Yes I have read Eco. I chose nouns associated with stories we ask children to believe in context of activities and expectations. As adults we have similar beliefs that I choose not to challenge or use as examples, yet they too are associated with activities and expextations. I hold that such a principle is implicit and also intrinsic to our craft. Hope this helps, Jon

Ah dear Pasq... I just love how some are innocently unaware that citations plagiarised from such a unit as 'the internet' can somehow show a certain bereftness of real thought.

Bobser, I doubt I'll receive the sort of grade I'm hoping for in my degree if I restrict my sources to the internet.
That's as daft a remark as the one you made to me not so long ago: Quote:

I'm lost. How is this related to "keeping something back" when discussing method?

When I perform I have a little game - just for my own amusement - which is to include the real method of an effect in such a way as no one notices ( possibly I do it to make myself feel better about the out and out lying by including the truth somewhere along the way).
For instance I may say something like " I've got a very good impression of your what you're thinking off " when doing a drawing dupe or "do you want that one or shall I keep going, I don't want anyone to thing I made you pick the "special" card " when doing a Svengali force ( this, if done in a jokey way, nicely blows the idea out of the water that you're forcing a card by the way ) |

Some of us are 'meat puppets', some of us are merely pastery-based.
The greater magicians among us will strip themselves of their meat-based outer coating, wriggle across the floor, and clothe themselves in a tough, rugged shell of knowledge, trickery, 'lying', 'misrepresentation' and 'ommittance'. They will emerge higher-men - their faces pink & shiny, a maddened twinkle in their eyes. & they will declare - "Behold! I am a mentalist! Now, find me a dog - I feel like setting fire to something." Pasquinade.
