I have a stage/parlour routine where I need to switch a card selected (with some magical assistance) from an astrology deck. The theme is astrological, and so the device or method, needs to be consistent. I know in advance which card needs to be switched to. I am female and wear flowing skirts and tops which do not have pockets. I have a gypsy/new age style, so a himber wallet, or plastic switching bag is not approriate.
I like making props! I need advice on what I could use or consider making. If it involves method, please just give a reference. I have a great magic store and good contacts to fill in the details. Or PM a method. Any props would have to look right for me to have with me naturally. Thanks in advance. If you can do half as well as the advice on my last question, I will be delighted. Lynne |

Hi Lynne,
I'm not sure I can help but I have a few questions. Quote:

I know in advance which card needs to be switched to. Where will this card be? A bit more detail would be helpful. In response to one of your earlier post about switching I replied: "I'm thinking that if you need a switching device that a 'Devil's Hanky/Napkin', old looking 'Buddha Papers' would be good for your character. There are some nice velvet change bags without the wood handles available too." |

Hi Jaz,
It was partly your previous replies on these two which started me on this track. I have been taking your answers to one question and applying them to another problem I have. I hadn't thought about switching devices which suit me until I found out about the Buddha Papers and the velvet change bags. Where would I get the velevet change bags or a template to make them? I saw the Buddha Papers. I wouldn't have a table and didn't think the papers would work as well on stage as close-up. The previous topic was for close-up. Am I wrong in that assessment of using the papers? Sorry about the lack of detail. The force card can be anywhere in the Astrology deck depending on what force I use. Any suggestion would be welcome. I could also gaff the card. I currently use a Piatnik Zodiac Deck, however even that is open to adjustment and suggestions would be appreciated. I would like to reduce to use just twelve zodiac cards or maybe some other tokens for the signs. Because my current switch isn't great, I need the whole deck as a cover. I want to change from the current method. For the routine I force a Libra. That means the switch has to be to a Virgo. I explain about the change in star signs over the last 2000 years. I then 'Update' the star sign of the spec. The reason I use Libra is that all Libras become Virgos - it is the only really straightforward change. It works OK, but I am not happy with my card force or the way I do the switch. I am very happy with the context and the patter I use. I do like the switch apparently happening in the spectaor's hands as the reaction as they tear open the envelope method I currently use, is really good. I would like to retain that aspect, but not necessarily with envelopes. Have I explained or just managed to totally confuse you? I am at the develpment stage and really interested in trying a variety of methods until I get this routine just right. Thanks for reading! Lynne |

I know I've seen other no handle change bags but can't seem to find them again.
Here's one no handle change bag: http://www.clowncostumes.com/Supplies/Props/body_props.html You may be right about Buddha Papers. I suppose you could make something similar from cloth. Anyway..I'll try to get back to you on a possible 'switch'. |

If you're not under close scrutiny, you could just use a hinging card, with a folding flap, which would change right in front of the spectators eyes, or while the back is facing them. You have to "ruin" three cards however, so I don't know if that's an option, but if you're interested PM me and I'll see if I can send you instructions.

Hi Lynne,
It seems to me that the most direct approach is the best. Therefore, you could put the card on the pack, do a DL and then just slide the card off and put it in your spectator's hand. If you do not understand, you can PM me. Peace, Parson

Thanks all, The PM was very good, Jaz. That change bag looks very, very interesting. I shall defintiely look into that. It means I could use symbol cards other than ordinary card decks as well. I would probably use bigger ones for stage.
Thanks Jordini. I can see how that would work. Wrecking cards is no problem. I have multiple decks of the special ones I use for that purpose. I like the direct approach, Parson. I do understand. As a result of some of the ideas here and in PMs, I think I'll generate a version of this routine for close up as well. Except I can't be sure of a Libra in a small group. Mmmm. There will be a way around that. I rather like the change bag, though, because I am on stage and like all sorts of props. I can decorate it with my signature spider as well, so it is in theme with everything else I use. I really find the stage of playing with the ideas to improve the routine is great fun. Thanks guys!
