Does anyone know the origin of Doug Hennings Elephant Vanish? I'm trying to find out who ( if anyone ) owns the performance rights. I'm speaking specifically of the one where he stands on the Elephants back until the last second before the vanish.
Best, Tim To the curious ....... I've just spoken to Bev Bergeron who developed the effect for show #40 of the Alakazam Show with Mark Wilson. ( years before either S&R or Doug performed it ) Thanks for the info Bev. Best, Tim |

Hi Don,
Finding the info on this was a magic trick in itself. I emailed many of the more known magic historians and illusion builders.......NOBODY replied except Walter Blaney. He mentioned seeing it years ago on Mark Wilsons Alakazam Show and suggested I contact Bev Bergeron as he was most likely the one who did it. I contacted Bev and he did indeed invent and perform that method of the Elephant Vanish. ( not to be confused with other methods such a Houdinis version ) Since the show was broadcast and recorded he has mighty good proof to have done it first. So....to answer your question....Bev Bergeron designed it and owns the performing rights. For those who don't know Bev was " REBO THE CLOWN" on the "Magic Land of Alakazam" and the creator of many such effects. You can see some clips from those old shows here http://www.MarkWilsonMagic.com/streamingvideo.html Best, Tim |

I know they did the elephant vanish on one of the Magic Circus shows. I don't remember it from the Alakazam show, but there are a lot of them. I'll check my collection tonight and let everyone know what I find out.
Thanks, Richard |

Thanks for doing that research Don. I'm going to have to get that series. The online videos are a good teaser. It seems there are many treasures to witness from that show. Imagine the pressure to come up with new stuff week after week! GEEESH!!! Best, Tim |

Those videos and the Alakazam videos are a goldmine of information. Not only do you get to see some great illusions, you get to see many variations on similar themes. Illusions are often brought back in "new clothes" so to speak. The Alakazam shows are especially educational because Mark, Nani and Bev had a very small budget to produce the magic. They had to rely on a lot of creative thinking to make each show new.
They also have a Magic in China video that is very good. There's not a lot of magic performed in it, but it does show what an adventure it must have been to travel with a show to China at that time. Thanks, Richard |
