Hi Guys
This post might actually belong in the W.E.A.R. thread, but I decided to post it seperatly. What a time I had last night - Steve Baker and I live only 40 miles apart, that isn't bad. We decided to have dinner to discuss the WEAR event and the rest of it. Can you imagine this, we met at a restaurant at 5:00 pm and sat down to talk over iced tea. we swapped stories and talked escapes and magic history and all that stuff. What seemed like 20 minutes later it was close to 8:00 pm and we finally got around to ordering dinner! Steve helped me with my WEAR escape, he showed me how to take my worakable mailbag and chain business and build it into a heart pounding show stopper. He also turned me on to a set of Ian's cuffs that I doubt I can live without (if you're reading this Ian, you'll be getting a PM from me soon) For those who would question Steve's generosity, question no longer. If you have doubts, email him, and ask for opinions and advice. You will probably be glad you did. Anyway even with our age difference, Steve and I have a lot in common, and we are going to make WEAR great! Cliff

I have not met him in person Cliff, but I have chatted to him with Skype and he has called me personally on the phone (dont know if I want to know what that call cost him) and I must agree with you whole heartedly. I have not met another Professional EA as willing to help as Steve. He is Kind, Friendly, Polite, Helpful, Witty, among many other things. You can very Easily lose track of time while chatting with him. Next in line has to be Clyde and Ian. They too have been all of the above. I have been helping Perry with learning Escapes, he has been a VERY enthusiastic student who has a great thirst for escape knowledge and has learned a great deal already just from tips and hints learned from myself, Clyde, Ian, Steve and Various others. When he asked if he was allowed to email Steve and ask for advice, I told him that I am sure there would not be a problem but I think he should ask Steve himself that question. Steve has helped the young lad so much. I have met VERY few Entertainers as well known and proffesional as Steve who will actually take the time to help someone who is beginning. Most would shrug a beginner off telling them that they are too busy, but not Steve Baker. This Great man will make time to help all that ask for his help.
My hat goes off to you, Steve Baker, and I hope to have the honour of having a meal with you one day too. Cliff, I am a Jealous man right now. :o) It must have been an experience and a half. Regards Wolflock

I must echo Wolfie's comments Cliff. You are very lucky and I'm very jealous. I can't wait until October when I come to California so I can meet both Steve and you in person.
Steve has also been very kind to me and has given me lots of advice and guidance over the years, but there's nothing like being able to sit down and break bread with a master of this art and pick his brain. I hope you take full advantage of your proximity to this great man. Best regards, Tony Parisi |

Hi Clifford,
Based on my personal experience, that was a quick meal. I went to lunch with him. It lasted a little over 8 hours and we missed supper. Rich |

Cliff...you have been honored to have shared a table and conversation with Mr.Escape. Steve Baker is a modern day enigma of escape. I've seen his work on tape....genius.

What an honor! I would love to sit and listen to Mr. Baker just tell of his work. He is one of our living masters in the art of performing. Honestly, he has forgotten more than I will ever know. He has done more than most even dream of doing! I am trying to put the money together for the October EA convention just to get to meet and talk to Mr. Baker(heck, I'll probably be too tongue tied to do much more than listen!).
I understand that he is a very giving and generous individual.

Harry...I have Mr.Escape on video doing the "race of death" where he is chained to a car loaded with explosives and has I think 8 to 10 seconds to free himself before another on coming car going 60mph slams into the car Steve is chained to.
After the this amazing and daring escape was done...Mr.Baker didn't stand there soaking up the cheers of the audience...he was very concerned about the driver of the car that slamed into his target...and not until he saw the driver was ok did he turn to accept his applause and take interviews. that's the kind of guy Steve Baker is... ~Rick~ |

Hi Cliff, I have recieved your email as you said, thank you. Back in the 1980's I remember seeing Mr Escape many times on TV and the thought never accured to me that we would ever met. He was there and I was here and what seemed like two different worlds apart from countries. When I arrived in the states prior to the first EA convention, I was invited by a friend to meet with Mr Steve Baker, what a thrill. The three of us met for lunch (but for some reason the Café owners had to close up early) We retired to the local park, a great sunny California day and relaxed on the lawns. We talked and talked and talked, Steve was most forthcoing on some of his secrets, life and many tales of the thrills of his life in the escape world. To this day I cannot get over the generousity of mind and time he gave to me. What an absolute thrill to met and be accepted as an equal with such a master in the business. Thanks again Steve for such a great time.

I've talked with Steve over the phone twice. He's a very straightforward conversationalist; very open.
I'm curious on his recommendations for arranging local publicity for the WEAR event. I'm sure he has some techniques under his belt we could all use to promote the event in our own areas. Steve

Good point Steve. I would like to hear what advice he would have on that too.
