If I don't want the shadow box effect, is special lighting and a backdrop still necessary to make this work. (ie, I just want to use it as an appearance. I don't care if the actual shadow effect occurs).

Emyers99 - To answer your question, yes. You do need the special lighting, at the very least. The shadow effect has nothing to do with the method, just a visual for the appearance. Hope this helps.

All I did is turn all the stage lights off and just use the light in the cabinet for everyone to see.
Here's where we did it last christmas http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSWxhc4QUBU |

So for this, You have the house lights completely off?? ANd just that one light?
I've been training these cards since they were small.

Well I did, since it was easier that way. You can have the stage lights adjusted low if you want. I could have gotten away with more light, but since it was only a 600 seat theater, I went with the simpler way.
And yes, the house lights were totally out. House and stage lights are two different things. As you can see, they had a black background on the stage, so the BA worked well. |

Ricker. Why would you use the same music as David Copperfield?
You did a descent job on performing the illusion. I am just trouble by the use of the same Phil Collins music he used in his Elevator shadow box entrance illusion. |

I liked the music, it fit the illusion and David hasnt used it in his show since the last century. I think the last time I saw him even do elevator was in the 93 show in Atlanta. Think 13 years is enough seperation?
Nowdays he opens his show with the motocycle shadow box and different music. |

Luckily enough, most spectators won't know that it is the same music. Magicians are a totally different story...but you aren't selling your show to magicians are you?
I love the song too. I listen to a least once a week. I would never use it my show with a similar illusion though. It just seems...wrong. Maybe it's just me. Hopefully you have permission/license to use the song. |

Rick, just to let you know. I have posted a question in the Right and Wrong section regarding this issue of using the same song for a similar illusion. I may be incorrect, but I feel this is wrong. 13 years is not a long time. I haven't cemented my conclusion on this however, and thus is why I have asked the opinions of others.

I pay ASCAP and BMI fees, like all good artists.

Now here's an exact copy of music, illusion and routine from Copperfield.
Jason Murphy Performs Twister http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGMd_N0gv1E As does Hans Klok http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5daMnrNxLg |

And I don't agree with that either. I am not saying it is wrong from a legal standpoint. I am just curious why another song can't be used.
The Twist by Chubby Checker in Jason's video and the Twist by the Fat Boys featuring Chubby Checker in Hans video are undoubtedly the first song you think of when you think of the Twister Illusion. I guess maybe it is not a wrong or right issue, but more of a personal ethics and showmanship issue. Fortunately I write my own music so I never run into this issue. (please don't take it as an attack, I am just trying to understand why this happens) With so much music out there to use, why do the same songs keep being used? It is good to hear you pay your ASCAP fees. I know so many that don't. |

Well, if you write your own music, I'd be interested in talking to you about composing me some unique music for some of the illusions I perform.
It would help you and I both in the long run. I play guitar, but can't really write songs other than hard rock LOL. Ideas? |

I would be happy to compose some music for you. How many songs are you looking for?
The best thing to do is to send me a video of how you want to perform the illusion/trick and then I can custom make the music directly to your routine. Best of all, there are no ASCAP fees! The only people who will have and use the songs will be you and me. Noone else will get the music I write for you. I retain the rights to use my music for myself though (although I may not). One member on this forum has used one of my songs for his metamorphisis. In return I ask for a trade. Whether it be a trick/book/illusion plans...obviously we can barter this out depending on your needs. Just remember I can spend at least 6 hours making a song (sometimes more). These will be studio quality recordings. Musically I tend towards Electronic Music. But I have dabled in other forms. You will have to tell me what style you are looking for Upbeat, hip-hop, trance, ambient, quiet, loud, busy, latin sounding, jazzy sounding, minimalistic.... And if you have a studio in your home or near you, you can record some of your guitar work over top too adding your own flavour to the mix. I can make a track that just has percussion, some sampled vocals (royalty free of course), maybe some strings or horns and bass. |
