We just added some photos of how to construct a Dollhouse Illusion from PVC pipe (without giving away any secrets, of course!) so you might want to drop by and check it out if you are thinking of working with this inexpensive medium.

Thanks for the photos. I'm interested in seeing the finished "Doll's House" and any of the other illusions made from the plans in the Gerrish book you are selling.
From the looks of the photos on the web page it seems like what is being built is more of what has traditionally been known as "The Arabian Tent" . (Mark Wilson has it in his Course on Magic as a "Haunted House" ) . I think using PVC pipe to make an Arabian Tent illusion is a great idea. Again , looking forward to seeing the finished photos of Gerrish's Doll's House and any other illusions that have been made from the plans in the book . |

Yes, the basic frame could be used for the Arabian Tent Illusion or Wilson's Haunted House but, without giving away any secrets, it's different in operation when it comes to making the tiny doll turn into the real-live one.
Gerrish chose this illusion for photographs because it uses several different types of "skins" on the one Illusion. Some Illusions are "naked" and without any skins, just decorated PVC pipe, but others require walls and this dollhouse shows various ways of getting them on the pipes. We will not be making public photographs of the other Illusions (although more will be incorporated into the finished book). Real Illusion builders don't need photographs, just plans and measurements, and it's too easy for "lookie-loos" to infer the secrets from photographs. When Paul Osborne stars photographing all his Illusions, then maybe we'll reconsider it. In the meantime, this one Illusion shows the basic principles of building PVC frames and adding "skins" and that's all we set out to do with these construction photos.

Ok, fair enough, you don't want to show photos of the finished product . Well, how about some descriptions of what the effects are ? There seems to be some redefinition going on with an effect such as "The Doll's House" . The Doll's House is a well-known illusion and most magicians have a common understanding of what that illusion involves. If you told me you were selling me a Doll's House Illusion and I paid for it and it turned out to be an Arabian Tent style frame "house" then I wouldn't be too happy about it . The Doll's House is not the Arabian Tent or any variation thereof . I am truly interested in your ebook , but not without more information about what exactly it is I'm getting . Would you care to update the listing on your web site with a brief description of the effect ? For instance : What is the "Shadow Triangle Illusion" or "The Garden Gate" or "The Transfigmigration Illusion" ? Not asking for the secret , just a clear description of what the effect is . 1 Shadow Triangle Illusion 2 Doll House / Gift Box Illusion 3 Utility Cabinet Illusion 4 Tip-Over Trunk Illusion 5 Garden Gate Illusion 6 Caged Animal Illusion 7 Appearing /Vanishing Archway Illusion 8 Stretching a Person Illusion 9 Staked Out Escape Illusion 10 Portable Stage Bonus - PVC Flash Pot & Confetti Cannon Just added! Book 2: 1 Transfigmigration Illusion 2 Square-Square Illusion 3. Shower Illusion |

First of all, we are not selling a Doll House Illusion. We are showing you how you can make one yourself from PVC pipes and dollar store materials for about $25. You will NEVER see one of our illusions at a casino, theme park or cruise ship show, although you might see Dr. Magic's Doll House Illusion based on our plans and built by him in his garage one Saturday night. If you catch Jim Gerrish and his Wiz Kids performing, you would see the Illusions they built for their own acts, but what you would infer from that, I have no idea, because what works for them probably won't work for you. Their Illusions look like they were built by kids in Gerrish's back yard, but Dr. Magic can probably spend a few bucks and make a more glitzy version in his workshop equipped with all the latest gizmos.
I guarantee that if one of the Wiz Kids got Paul Osborne plans and built an illusion from it, it would not resemble anything you have ever seen on stage before. So I don't get your point about needing to see photos before you will consider buying the plans. Now let me tackle the remarks about the definition of the Doll House Illusion. Ours is labeled as a combination Doll House / Gift Box Illusion. It is NOT the Rose Doll House, or the Culpitt Doll House, or the Oriental Doll House, or the Temple of Benares... shall I go on listing what it is not? But to the audience, it is a Doll House Illusion - a tiny clown doll is put into the little empty house, and it gets bigger... and bigger... and finally turns into a real live clown. That's what the audience sees, and they don't give a hoot if it is made of PVC pipe and cost $25 or is made from fine sandalwood and cost $3000 and is signed inside by David Abbott himself. Now, regarding adding clear descriptions to each of the titles, that is a good sensible idea and I will work on that. Thanks for your interest and suggestion!

I bought the $20. no method book and my one complaint is there is not a description of each illusion even in that book. I know I bought the $20. not the $50. version with the secrets but you could have given a description so I would at least have a shot at figuring out some of the illusions that I did not know.

However, you must be new to the concept of flexible electronic publishing which allows us to be responsive to the needs of our readers and add things (like descriptions) to the publication. In the paper world, you wouldn't expect a book publisher to keep sending you updated book pages in response to your questions, but by now, you should have seen that electronic flexible publishing is different. You should have noticed that we were adding new Illusions to your book from Book 2 and that we haven't deserted you. The book you received several days ago is not the same book you will end up with a few months from now. It changes over time as we add photos, more Illusions, and... if someone had brought up the idea before now... even descriptions. But keep watching your on-line version of the book (not the pdf file which will be updated again when the entire book is complete to everyone's satisfaction) and you will see that descriptions will appear in your updated table of contents very soon. Meanwhile, if you have any other ideas, tell them to me, your flexible publisher. It's OK to post your complaints anywhere you wish, but I'm the person who can do something about them and I can't be everywhere checking every forum on the Internet. ..................... Posted: Apr 27, 2005 12:32am Descriptions have just been added to both the ads and the internal Table of Contents for each version of the book. Boy, am I fast!

Fearson's Monkey Vanish is a natural for PVC pipe adaptation. Another is Bryce's Screen. If you made Bryce's screen according to Paul Osborne's plans, but then wanted to enlarge it slightly to accomodate a hefty person, you'd be out of luck. But with PVC pipe, you can make new screen frames overnight and they will always be adjustable to accomodate any size person.

We've had lousy weather on the weekends in East Orange, NJ and because I can only construct these things outdoors in my yard and driveway, I have to wait for good weather. Spellbinder is not to blame. I need this Illusion for a show coming up next month and the Wiz Kid who will be the "Clown Doll" needs to rehearse with the Wiz Kid Illusionist who will be performing the Illusion. So I hope this weekend will have some nice paint spraying and skin laying weather so I can get it finished. Meanwhile, I have to get working on writing up the next Illusion plan for Book 2 which will be the Double Palanquin Illusion and the Litter Vanish. Spellbinder reports that the publication of the Expanding Die has made people anxious to get more of my own original stuff. Or maybe he thinks flattery will make me move faster. It's working, too!

Since I couldn't do much this past weekend because of the weather, I stayed indoors and added two more illusions to book 2; the Double-Split Palanquin and The Litter Vanish, both of which can be combined in presentation. So it's not like I wasn't busy. I hate to mention this but the prediction is for more rain this next weekend. We'll see. I really need to get this Dollhouse Illusion finished, but in the meantime the Wiz Kids are rehearsing with the bare frames so they don't miss out on rehearsal time.

Did it stop raining yet?
If not, may I suggest you stop buildinjg the Doll House and start working on an ark? |

Spellbinder Inner circle The Holy City of East Orange, NJ 6438 Posts |
The Noah's Ark Illusion is not a good candidate for PVC pipe interpretation because it has to carry too much weight in it's hiding area. However, Gerrish's Double-Split Palanquin could easily be DECORATED like Noah's Ark and produce a lot of livestock before the ladies make their appearance. I don't know how they'd feel being cooped up inside it with a lot of goats and chickens, however.
And no, we keep getting these rain squalls just at the time Gerrish and I are free to work on the project on weekends. It hasn't quite added up to 40 days and nights yet. Look for the rainbow. Jim Gerrish submitted a photo of an "almost" finished dollhouse for publication today. The final modifications are being made by the Wiz Kid Clown who will actually make use of this Clown House Illusion in performance next month. Gerrish has promised to try to take one last photo of the Illusion either in performance or at a dress rhearsal.
