I have posted this already but I felt this post belonged hear so I have brought it over!
Theirs a lot of wands out there most I think are rubbish. A good honest working wand is hard to find, and you need to know what you are looking for. I know there are some fun and joke wands that’s fine, but I am talking what is a good wand. For me two brass tips and hard wood is the way to go. Avoid these screw apart things not only can they split they just look to clean. My wand is made from rose wood and looks the way a wand should look in my mind. http://www.streetcredmission.co.uk/MariosNewSite /MariosSiteCloseUp.html You can just make it out on my web page. If I was to get my self a new wand I would look at the Tabman wands, Magic Pitch sell them, I have not handled one but it does look the part. http://www.magicpitch.com/catalog/index.......6374d6ca I am sure there are other good wands out there but I was a Black Pool Magic Convention there was over hundred dealers there not one of them had a good wand in my eyes, not one. The Penguin wand and stiles and ones like it, are only good for breaking in my mind. Open palm spin, thumb spin or drummer’s role slow down with that log because it is too heavy, good as a paper wait on your office desk. Now if you get one that is to light then forget open palm spin, because you can be sure every now and then it is going to take off. Mind you I have never met any one that does an open palm spin other than me. I am sure you all do and just have not seen you yet. Spinning open palm with right hand and left you do need to find the perfect wand. What kind of wand do you use? Choose your wands wisely. Mario |

That's a good looking wand. Cocobolo is also a great wood for a wand. It is sturdy and not very brittle. Ebony is good, but if you want to hit things with it, you are likely to break it.
I am not a wand spinner, so I don't have the same concerns you do, Mario. But my Golden Rod wand is really great for that. Oscar Muñoz and Paul Gertner like it for that.

I use two,
the Tabman wands are gorgeous, quite light (not too light though) , the wood is fabulous. I also use a Davenport 14 inch wand, which is a bit heavier.Which is what I had originally, but now I've "converted" to the Tabman wand. Kindest Regards DAK |

I second the GoldenRod. I do the Vernon wand spin, the baton spin, and the thumb spin (I think that's a drummer's spin) with it. One good thing is I NEVER worry about it breaking. How you gonna break brass?

I still use a heavy hardwood dowel that I stained and polyurethened. That is a good way to test the waters and to see what length and diameter you want. Some hardwood dowels are pretty light, but some are pretty good. Mine is not as fancy as these others, but look fine on the street, have good thumping heft, and do the job.

Thanks for your kind words, Mario. The GoldenRodâ„¢ was designed with real world performing in mind.
Davenport's is an interesting shop with a long history. Too bad they seem to have fallen into the same rut that some other shops have -- lots of stuff from MM, etc. The "L&L wand" referred to elsewhere on this forum is actually the MM wand. I had a few of these in stock a long time ago. If you screw them together and roll them along a flat surface, you will see just how great they are.

Right now I'm just using a 12" x 1/2" rosewood wand. Cellini wanted a bunch made to sell at lectures with those specifications so I had a half a dozen extra made for myself.
Just a stick of wood. No tips. Previous to that I used a thicker cocobolo wand but I like the way the cups sound when I rattle them with this thinner wand. I also have a porper 2-piece wand that you can see here PIX that I am reserving for more formal work. The rosewood wands are also among those pix with similar wands of other types of wood.

1/2 inch diameter is OK..the 12 " lenght is soley 'that' short because of the flip-stick move Cellini does, otherwise I would consider it for being too short.
An up to 16 incher is better to my likeing, but not suitable for the flip-stick move. The fact that Don Alan did recommend a 9 incher or so (IIRC), was solely because of he did the Benson Bowl -where he used the stick- sitting at the table, so the distance to draw it out from under his arm had to be a short one..

Werner, I had Bill make me a GoldenRod that was an inch longer than he had ever made and, well, it was ALMOST too long! It's 15 inches long and I had to re-learn my Silent Mora spin. I had to learn to get that elbow up higher because it would catch on my forearm muscle. I teach Praying Mantis Kung Fu so my forearms are freakishly large (from 30 years of grabbing and yanking students).
I don't think I could handle a longer wand if I wanted to spin it. |

Mario, I use two wands. When I want to do the "Flip" stick stuff, I use the wand that Tommy Franks includes with his Phoenix Cups. It's a cocobolo wand about 12 inches. It works great and keeps me from denting my cups too much.
I also had a buddy give me a wand that is an 18 inch aluminum bar with a balance point in the center with a string wrap. It makes a lot of noise and can knock a cup about 15 feet off your table if you smack it right. The cool thing is that when you balance it on your finger and tap it with a knife or a silver dollar it rings... And it rings really nice. When I have a rowdy crowd, I spin it and then balance it then I tap it 3 times and let the ring go away each time. They get really quite and then I look at them and say, "Wow, that puts us in a different frame of mind doesn't it." It's a heavy wand, but spins nice. Kind of in slow motion. And when you hit your cups it makes some racket. It's a fun thing to do and is different. I have had a bunch of magicians wanting me to put these out, maybe someday. The guys name was Blazzing Bill. He got burned real bad in an fire eating accident and then after a years worth of work to get himself back together, he got killed in a head on collision by a drunk driver. What a loss. He was a hard friend to loose. So maybe I'll put it out in his name. Maybe someday. |

Quote: Any size of wand and weight does need a different 'inertia' to do the wandspin.
On 2005-04-24 20:05, rikbrooks wrote: Therefor it is a good idea, always to use the same wand when doing the wandspin. Mixing different sizes and weights of wands to do the wandspin, will most certainly result in a slow and bad wand-spin, depending on its weight, when just done a single time without getting used to 'that' wand... (I know, because I do play with diff. sizes and weights ) The wandspin, using that heavy wand from f.ex. L&L (that is the same I suppose Penguine is selling) and which is 13 1/4 inches long, is due to its weight very easy to do well, even when the lenght is short, but as that thing is very heavy, one has to be carefull that inertia doesn't take over. BUT, when used to it, and soley using that wand, there is no peoblem. IMHO it's just too heavy to carry.. A 15 inch wand, or even a 16 inch one, no matter of what light weight material, is a join to handle for the wandspin, my Perspex one does measure 16 inches and it works very well, but as mentioned to mix diff. wands lenght/weights takes each time a few minutes of practise to get used to them.. Re the Golden Rod, it looks nice..I don't know it, but IF it is made of solid brass it might be a bit too heavy for the wandspin in lenghtes over 12 or 14 inches and would 'take over' re a wandspin.

When I used a wand, it was a drum stick with the drumming end cut off. Durable and cheap.

Well, GoldenRod is very heavy for a wand, but not so much as you might think. It's a slim wand, and elegant. You do have to get used to it though, it's a little different.

Bropaul, I like the SOUND of that, I some times ballance my wand on my chin with a pack of cards ballanced on one end of the wand. It is great way to get some folk to stop and watch a small door way show.

Yes. It is leather covered, brass studded, sewn with horsehair, and solid walnut.
I still have it. It can make a heckler talk really silly. |
