Just looking for other gems in the bizarre angle of the craft...
you need not list the obvious gems , ie, Capricornian tales, haunted magick, complete invocation, or my ever eluding me book called Arcana of Bizarre magick! These we often talk about, but are there other underground vibes you love and know about... thanx ahead Baba Kali |

Maybe I haven't been around this board long enough, but I haven't seen the compilaiton of SWAMI/MANTRA mentioned in anybody's list.
Steven Minch's work seems to be overlooked (to me, anyway) when I'm reading lists here. THE BOOK OF THOTH was probably the first book I read on effects exclusively w/ tarot cards. Also, after digging through a dusty box at Abbot's table, a series called STRANGE SECRETS. Does this help to get the ball rolling? Chris |

You want bizarre, have a good look at the books they give kids learning to read.
The Cat in the Hat? Have you wondered about "Dick and Jane". You'd think they were primers about human behavior for aliens. Perhaps they are. More semiotics. Less beaten paths.

Here is a site of bizarre stories (no magic):
http://www.geocities.com/masterkey_2000/storyindex.html But if at least one of these doesn't keep you up at night, I'll come up with a bizarre angle on the 21 card trick! LOL! Seriously, these are GOOD! |

Just for the record, here's the most complete bibliography of Bizarre Magick and seance-related books. Not everything is a gem, but this'll show you what is out there.

The more you look in the magic shop, and the more you set your sites on older forms of magic(k), the more trite and hollow you will become.
H. P. Lovecraft and more recent semioticians have paved over that ancient ground the was salted and plowed in the time of the Ancient Greeks. It was dead when the Roman empire fell and become uninhabitable back in the middle ages. Have you read Harlan Elison? Have you read Alan Moore? We don't use Latin anymore. We don't use Greek Mythology anymore in our culture. We don't wear robes or capes... well unless you are in the upper eschelons of the Clergy or the KKK. The most frightening alien we know of is named Hanible Lechter. The most bizarre moment we have today is a guy walking out of a phone booth and eanestly asking what year it is. Is Santa Claus really just a frontman for the elves? Are they the same elves who live in a tree and make cookies? Just what is in those cookies anyway?

I don't know what's in the cookies but I make a mushroom omelet that'll rock your world.
For bizarre, I find more magic in books that are not magic books. By the way Jonathan, a friend just turned me onto Nick Sagan, Carl Sagan's son, and his book "Idlewild". Very worth checking out. Thought you might enjoy it. Mark

You say you want bizarre?
http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~ursa/philos/oxcomp1.htm Science goes to places more bizarre than costume melodrama. *just read some reviews and interviews of Idlewild... I guess when you build a better Skinner box, you do get some disaffected children. Interesting to compare the reviews of this to what was said of Julian Lennon's initial offering some time ago.

Nice essay. . . so where do you fall on the physicalist, dualist, mentalist spectrum? I have a guess, but I'm curious.
