I am interested in learning hypnosis. I have a little experience with it as I was trained to do some guided imagery for my psychological practice. I was wondering what books some of you might recommend to start out with. I have seen one by Ormand McGill that looks like it may be good. Any help would be appreciated.

Modesty almost kept from mentioning my own text on the subject, "Hypnosis: Clinical, Social, and Theatrical Uses." Although written for anyone with a serious interest in the subject, it is especially relevant to someone interested in adding hypnotherapy to their counseling practice.

You can read excerpts online at:

Desix and Ed, thank you both. To Desix, yes this is a hot topic. I am trying to absorb it all. To Ed, a special thank you because I am looking to incorporate hypnosis into my psychotherapy as well as developing shows. I worked with a psychiatrist some 15 years ago who wanted me to learn hypnosis so we could use it in the practice. She would have paid for it too. I sort of wanted to but was young and foolish. Now I wish I would have taken her up on it!

I'm going to get slated for this.

I started learning hypnosis by reading books then hypnotising my stoned mates and playing round with their subconscious minds. You should probably take courses but then there are a lot of things you should do. I've learnt more through experimentation than I have from any literature or course, anyone sensible will say otherwise but go out hypnotise someone your not worried about sending insane and see what happens.

try these

"Hypnotic Realities" Milton Erickson
"Patterns of the Hypnotic techniques" vol 1&2 Bandler Grinder
"New Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnosis" Ormond Mcgill
"Speed Hypnosis" Harry Arrons (Just inductions)
"Wonder Words" Kenton Knepper (not hypnosis as such but it will help with your linguistics)

A couple of the threads have endorsed the $12 book "Fun with hypnosis". I got it and also think it is a good book, with all the basics. Mcgill seems to be "everything, everybody ever wanted to know ever about hypnosis", which isn't a bad thing at all...the more educuated your the better you understand, the better it shows in your practice/performance.

Anything there is a good investment. Once you buy anything you will automatically get membership to the site for a month and each additional purchase adds another month. You can also pay for membership. Membership in this site will really make a difference in your mindset and in your taking action. The articles by Geoffrey Ronning and the Forum are definitely worth the price of admission.
