Its Paul Hallas not Harris.
The book came out a couple of years ago and is a history of packet tricks. I think, but am not sure, that it contains packet tricks too. Mr Hallas is a nice guy who sometimes posts on Magic Café. He lived in England until last year when he moved to the U.S.A. and always had a web site here. A search should find more information. I never bought the book because I have all the Packet tricks I will ever need. |

Do you mean, "Small But Deadly," by Paul Hallas? It is a book about the history of packet tricks and contains a few effects as well. Published by H&R. You can get it there or probably from your dealer.

There are two reviews somewhere in the Café archives by Randy Wakeman and Martini from when the first edition was released. Another review can be found here:
http://www.online-visions.com/reviews/03......dly.html In fact, your host of this very Café enjoyed the book and was going to review it, but never got around to it, maybe because it had been reviewed twice already (remember Steve?) It can be bought from most of the larger dealers, H & R Books, Hank Lee, Magic City, Hocus Pocus etc. etc. By the way H-A-Z, thanks for getting my name wrong, more people might actually look at the thread now, lol. If you enjoy a good read, you'll enjoy the book, if you don't you probably won't. Paul |

I think he is saying its by Paul Harris because I seen a website before that had misprinted the title as "Small But Deadly by Paul Harris". I even thought it was a Harris book, but later seen it was Hallas.
Honest Mistake Scott
Thanks! Scott B.

I did a search at Magic Warehouse and couldn't find it, but they do have Harris's Art of Astonishment books. Which look nothing like Small But Deadly.
However for those interested in trivia (things like the Kevin Bacon game etc.)there is a connection between the books. in SBD I actually MENTION Harris's effect Reset. The effect actually is fully described in the Art of Astonishment. But don't feel bad. London's Bobby Bernard PURPOSELY introduces me to everyone as Paul Harris Now if only I had his smarts... Paul |

You're right, Irish guy. I used the search engine to search for it (seems a logical thing to do). Just tried again. Makes you wonder what else they might have you can't find :0
I dropped them a line so hopefully it will get corrected. Paul. |

I have the book which I purchased directly from Paul ( Inscribed to me I might add ). The book will take you on a trip down memory lane if you are at all into packet tricks ( of which I am), I would definitely rate this book as a "Must Read"
Having dealt with Paul directly on the purchase was a very enjoyable experience. And once again it is "HALLAS' Rennie
The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......

"I never bought the book because I have all the Packet tricks I will ever need." Actually Eddie, that is arguably a good reason FOR buying the book, or a reason you should have bought it before. You obviously like packet tricks. For those that have lots of packet effects it will probably have them going back to some of them for another look, or finding better versions of the same effects. For those that don't have too many packet tricks, but like them, the book can probably save them a fair bit of money. Current advertising (nothing to do with me) describes it as a consumers guide to packet effects. The book works on several levels, even as just a fun read. Thanks for your kind comments Rennie. The book was always meant for more discerning readers such as yourself All that matters to me is that the people it gets to, enjoy it. If I'd intended to aim it for everyone and his brother I might have titled it "Extreme Packet Tricks! -The Guide to Picking Up Chicks With Four of Five Cards" :0 More reviews will be appearing in the major magic magazines in due course. Paul:
Firstly, I recently bought "Small But Deadly" from Hank Lee (where it went down in price 20% three days after I bought it. Grrr...) and like other people here have reported, I had a hard time putting it down and finished it in two nights. I had just recently bought a lot of used tricks from eBay which included some packet tricks, and that combined with your book inspired me to learn Wild Card and Cascade. I was also inspired to buy the E&W video tape and packet trick combo packages on eBay as well. Thanks for the inspiration! Do you have or do you know of an index for the tricks referenced in your book? If not, I just might read the book again and put together an index. To anyone wondering about Paul's book, I encourage you to get it! It's a great resource and an historical reference. -Dan |

Dan,
Like you and many other readers, I also had trouble putting it down once I started reading it as you were always waondering whats next after I finish this interesting chapter, I also really like Cascade as you mentioned it is one of my favorites. Paul, always happy to put in a kind word for you as you really worked with me when I was trying to buy the book and of course I have been extremely pleased with it so if you need an endorsement I am your man.. That is a big discount from Hank for a new book, must be moving too slow for him because the ads and reviews in the big magic magazines haven't appeared yet. Price may bob back up when they do. However, learn a couple of the tricks like the Universal Card routine in there or The World's Oddest Card Trick and you'll feel like you've got your money's worth all over again! No there is no index, I think that might be a bigger task than you imagine. Regards, Paul. |

Best wishes, Paul. |

For those that have the book and have been playing with "The Hand is Quicker Than The Eye" (part of the previously marketed Handy Trick Collection)here's just a handling variant at the conclusion for table hoppers.
After showing the hand pile blank and flipping it over to show the other side, deal these to the table reversing the order. After the final moment with the other pile where you turn the hand card over to prompt applause, pause then quicky flip the card back, flip the entire packet over. Holding this in your right hand pick up the other packet with your left hand in slightly spread condition, place the right hand cards into the middle of these (so two of the left hand cards are above and two below). Square the packet, then use the bottom card to flip the packet face up, (a hand shows)revolve the single card (what was the bottom card) over, and add it to the bottom. The last bit should flow together and in appearance you are simply collecting up the cards. Actually the effect is now reset for the next table. Best wishes, Paul. |
