This subject actually kind of upsets me a great deal.
I was downloading music last night, when I remembered there was a video search function, and for the hell of it typed in "penguin magic". Needless to say, nearly EVERY instant download available on the website was on there ready for the taking. Ellusionist, Sankey, Oz, everything you could want from these download-available sites was up there. What do you all think?

I've seen this topic discussed all over the place..not only about magic..but about p2p anything. Those against it, will just have to suck it up and take it because p2p will never go away. Those for it, well, they are in luck, because p2p will never go away. My opinion: if you don't like it don't do it. If you hate it with a passion, then I suggest you never become a music artist, and never release any original magic tricks

I don't worry about it, because I feel someone who wont put the money into magic isn't really serious about it. I know a kid who was like OMG! I wanna be a card magician!! Then he downloaded som stuff and now he's like.. forget that. If somone really has a passion for something I feel they would suport the creator.

Get off your p2p connection and go buy that stuff. But this has been discussed all over the Café, so that's all I'm gonna say. I just had to support Irishguy becuase its the only laugh I've had all day; I guess today has been a long day. |

Maybe the original poster was downloading music legally (e.g. independent artists). But it seems like that's probably not the case.

My point is I'm sick of hearing about it...like I said in the thread "50 post dash," there's too many people worrying about copyright laws and theres no fun to be had in magic anymore. That's the last thing I'm gonna say concerning this issue.
I don't want to get in a debate with any fellow magician's here, we will just have to agree to disagree.

Agreed, but sometimes it's hard to find out who to credit, and then it's really annoying when you think you've come up with someone original, and then find out that someone else has marketed it..etc..

It seems like its a problem, for movies, music, and magic, that's going to be hard to contain. It really just comes down to each persons moral belief, and whether or not they are willing to break the law.

Krist0pher never stated that he was downloading any music that was illegal.
There is lot's of "Public Domain" music available as well as lot's of copywrited music. I find it humourous that the above posts have just assumed (and we know what that means) that krist0pher was not downloading legal material. I hope that if the day should come that I must have a jury trial, that you guys are not on that jury. Iven

Also to add, a lot of P2P's now have you pay for your music downloads. last time I was on kazaa all the music downloads where at a cost unless it was released by underground groups.

A mate of mine uses those p2p file sharing programs and he typed in magic and there was a load of magic e books there. He told me what they were but I can only remember a couple of them Royal road to card magic , The magic of Michael Ammar , J B Bobos modern coin magic , Enyclopedia of card tricks

Well theres quite a few P2P engines out there that won't charge for downloads and probably never will...P2P was never intended to share illegal content, but with the good, always comes the bad.

I once saw someone on eBay selling a CD-ROM with e-books of The Magic of Michael Ammar, some stuff by Paul Harris, all the Penguin instant downloads, and a few other things.
By the way, Encyclopedia of Card Tricks is in the public domain now, so an e-book of that might be legitimate. |

Stealing is stealing, those that do it, justify in their mind that it's ok. Anyone that is serious about magic will not become a magician unless they are dedicated...just like anything else. E-Books are a problem created mainly by their authors I believe. Instead of publishing books, they took the easy way out before safeguards could be utilized. It still doesn't make it right though. My best material was purchased, legitimately, from authorized sellers. I don't own any E-books nor do I intend to get any. I'm not saying they are bad, but I prefer a hardbound book or high quality DVD for my collection. Magic is expensive, and the kids out there have been spoiled with their P2P networks. I would guess that the majority of the folks downloading e-books are only interested in the secrets, because if they were serious about the art, they would be too busy with the material they already have to spend time downloading something they don't really need.

Just to clarify what I said: I agree that stealing is stealing.
About the Encyclopedia of Card Tricks, the copyright has long since expired, so e-book versions of it can be legitimate. |
