What is that trick called where David Blaine reads some girl's mind revealing that she was thinking of her sister, Dawn, and then a second later the name is a taxi passing by.
What book can I learn that from? |

A book called "pre show work for the magician"...just kidding, but there's your answer...

It's New York... everything has graffiti on it. So just first read the person's mind then look around... you'll probably spot something with that name on it.

According to Blaine's book - Mysterious Stranger, he says...
I was staring intently at a woman. I'd just said to her, "Think of someone in your life that is important to you." Her whole demeanor changed; she started to look a little nervous. This was the final day of shooting my second special, Magic Man, and we were losing light fast--this would be the last possible shot and we had to get it. "The name is short," I said. She made eye contact. Her body language made me think I might be right. I also sensed that it was a woman's name, probably someone close to her. "And the name symbolizes something else," I said. her eyes widened. I knew in my gut, just by intuition, that I was right. At that exact moment a truck drove by with WHITE ROSE, the name of the company, painted on the side. She did not see her book because her back was to it. I thought the appearance of the word "rose" at that precise moment was too fortunate to be simply coincidence, and my hunch was that it was the name she was thinking of, so I turned around so she could see the truck. At the same moment a cab drove by with the word DAWN spray painted in huge letters on its side. She saw it, started screaming, and then broke down crying. I did not even see DAWN on the cab, but when she reacted so strongly, that was the name that immediatly came to mind. I intuitively understood from the depth of her emotion that Dawn was her mother and that she has passed away. Some might say this was that strange place where coincidence plays into reality, but when it hits on this level, it seems more than a coincidence, as if there is some other force at work. -David Blaine, Mysterious Stranger p106 Personally, I like some of my tricks better than Blaine's. More power to him for his success and maybe with some luck, I too will have a TV show. I will truly know that I have succeeded in magic when I visit here and everyone is complaining that Sensei Strange is not a magician. Walk in Peace, Sensei Strange |

Do you mean that he uses tricks - not real magic? Man, I want to be honest with you. There is real magic out there and David has it. and the other David too. In fact if your name is David chances are high that you do real magic, whether you read peoples minds or make tigers disappear.
In love and deep respect, david |

David Rainking,
I am glad you have a powerful name that you believe in. Sadly I have met a great many Davids who have yet to find their magic, but a least their name is not holding them back. Sensei Strange |

Man I wish my name was David! See this is how that whole thing evolved it was obvious that there was a co-conspirator but the idea came from Uri Gellar.Uri Gellar has an addiction of writing his name on everything furniture, cabs, bathroom stalls, tables and so on.I really think David is a great magician far from Houdinis legacy but a great magician.

So, because Blaine touches people he does Magic? What if we were to tell those people that a lot of the stuff he does is a set up? A lot of the information he gets he knows a head of time from that person’s friend or whatever. Should we tell them that sometimes he has stooges? Let these same people see Mr. Osterlind’s, Ted Lesley, Larry Becker ETC.... Then, after seeing one of those agains what Blaine does, then let them tell us what was more memorable and what felt like “REAL” magic. Because being double jointed and twisting your arm is really memorable, let me ask you, what is he going to do next? Say to someone “I got your nose, now I will put it back.”
A lot of his effects aren’t even his own. A lot of his stuff is gimmicks and what he buys off the internet just like a lot of us. Now, I’m not saying that’s wrong because I will be the first one to admit that I buy tricks and gimmicks when they come out. But I am not making a career out of it or a living. Does he give credit on any of his DVD’s for the effects he does that have been invented by other magicians? Yes, he does magic tricks, but I have talked to a lot of professional magicians who dislike this guy because that’s all it is: magic tricks. This guy gets a lot of praise for stuff he buys, and a lot of things he doesn’t make up himself. Last time I checked, I don’t think Mr. Osterlind asked for LEONARDO DICAPRIO to appear on any of his DVD’s to add some “Wow, he does Magic for a famous actor, how cool!”

I apologize, I did not realize that magicians were not allowed to cheat. Quote:

Often when I perform a nice routine for a person, I will hear the comment "You are the greatest magician I have ever seen." Now I am not the greatest magician in the world -in fact I am quite a novice. But to be sure, I am the greatest magician that person had ever gotten to experience. That is part of the beauty of this art. Now I am sure Mr Osterland and the like blow people away. But the fact is so does Blaine, so the question is why attack a magician practicing his art. He is not into exposure. He does not appear to be ripping people off. So let him play... A lot of the effects I use, I did not create. Now that I think about it, I may have never created an effect. No there is one. I use some moves from Osterland, Asher, Erdanase, Dipalma, Dean, Cellini...etc. I do not ever recall crediting them in my performances. When I perform, it is my magic. That is the nature of the art. Now to another magician of course I would never claim the work. Such is the nature of the art. The audience does not care who invented it. They want to be entertained. I am relatively new to magic and I did not realize this was immoral. Oh wait, all magicians do that. So if he is not doing anything any other magician is doing -what is the problem? Oh, I see the main difference between Blaine, and 99 percent of magicians is that he has a TV special. Quote:
I’m not the only Magician who feels this way either. What I was originally trying to tell Vanilla192, was that he should learn some information and talk to other Magicians here. That Magicians - Mentalist here could give him much better resources. Of course it is the right of every person to have the opinion about whether they like a performer or not - this is the price of fame. But why bash the magic he has created for people? The other day I met a man. He found out I was a magician. He told me about a trick his father performed for him. He described Red Hot Mama card effect. I relayed the story in great detail. "I wish my father was still alive" he said. "That trick is probably worth a lot of money, but it died with him. As it so happened Red Hot Mama was set up in my pocket at that very moment. I thought for a second and replied "That trick sounds amazing - I wish I could dod something like that." You see I created more magic in this persons eyes by reinforcing his father's magic than drawing attention to myself and my own powers. If I performed that trick I would have dispelled the specialness his father had created in his memory. Now this fellow who started this post obviously was touched by Blaine's piece of magic, whether you like the magician or not. He came here to the elite forum of Mentalists to find more information about the art and the effect. But rather than reinforce the beauty of this piece of magic, what s/he found was distain for the artist that touched him/her and exposure of the effect. Bummer man. That is not what I would like to see in the world of magic is all. I would like to see a unity of magicians where we try to hold one another up. Some say that I am a dreamer...But of course this is just my humble opinion and it is a free site. Please continue to tear at the success of others and dispell the magic they create in people's eyes. Vanilla, you seem set to learn secrets, which people here will not give away lightly - read the 13 steps to mentalism, get a tv crew, and you will be able to perform that 'miracle', if you would like to be another Blaine clone. Or learn to read minds for real, as Blaine claims in his book.

David Blaine has got to be the most boring performer I've ever seen. I love his magic and he's a master at it...but he has the personality of a brick.

Just no way in **** that an amazing coincidence such as that is going to randomly happen ON CUE just as the cameras were rolling to tape the TV special. The odds against are just too great. Besides, what magician tapes a TV special, just HOPING that sheer luck will play out for him and allow him to not end up with egg on his face in front of the cameras? If you are going to do a special like that, you are going to make d*amn sure that all your ducks are lined up, and that the "coincidence" will occur at the precisely correct moment to create maximum astonishment. Relying on pure luck would be fool- hardy, and would likely end up wasting a LOT of video tape. Those of us who do close up with cards and such PLAN our amazing magical coincidences, and it works the same way on a bigger scale. He was, in my opinion, not being forthright in this book.

His book was meant to fan the flames of his "legend". He is swiftly becoming larger than life with the new generation. I always get a kick out of the kids that love when blaine did the card thru window, then I show them the clip of Copperfield doing it with a marked card on a moving train. Floors em!
