Totally intrigued. I am familiar with different chemicals for self - lighting match, etc., but don't see this a the method. Just want to know what ignites the "light". Please direct me to a resouce. I want to sleep tonight. Smile

Uh, maybe potassium? (Am I thinkin' the right chemical here?) I remember readin' some really thick, really obscure magic books from the library when I was much younger. Mostly they contained history and exposure of really old tricks that nobody does anymore (but I'm still amazed that I've never seen the one or two gems from those big books performed these days). Anyways, I remember readin' about how you could use little balls of potassium (I think it was) to ignite stuff, as it's highly reactive in water. It said that an airborne mist or wet fingertip was enough to start the reaction.

I've never seen Blaine perform this effect, though. Any ideas where a video could be found.

Playing with potassium (or any other "fire" chemical) is potentially dangerous, and you should only do it if you KNOW 100% what you are doing, and then only under carefully controlled conditions.

I don't remember the Blaine effect in question, but I suspect that he's using a far simpler method than potentially-lethal chemicals.

I certainly hope nobody tries the potassium route.
Yes, it's easy enough to get it to ignite; it's a whole other story, though, to put it out!

Check Blaine's "Fearless" video/DVD. It's on there, though I do not recall off hand which of the programs it was on.

It was when he was performing for the Knicks. He had a card picked...tore it in two...and both halves caught on fire. The card is too thin to be very gimmicked. I've worked with the chemicals listed earlier, but there is a small time delay for a reaction, which is not what happened when he performed it. Smile

I read somewhere that someone speculated that he had a match and something to strike it against under the card... not sure if that's true, the DVD doesn't give you a good angle on it to check.

Potassium burns HOT. Check you Table of Elements from Chemistry, it's extremely unstable, being to the left and all (you're looking for "K").

I would be very interested in knowing how it's done if anyone figures it out...SAFELY.

After watching the video in slow motion, It sure looks like a gaffed card with flash in there, as for ignition... Got me.. the way his fingers move in his Left hand it could be a ring...
