As I write this I am thinking of Larry Jennings' Always Cut the Cards. The routine plays powerfully for many and the method is so deviously simple. I hasten to add that I am not arguing against difficult routines. But Vernon talked a lot about eliminating sleights and I'm sure that Trini will correct me if I am mistaken, but, I sense from reading a lot of Marlo that he strove for the same. When Darwin Ortiz talks about simple versus easy, I think that he is also arguing for the most efficient method to maximize effect. He writes in Cardshark and elsewhere that simple is preferable to easy and that simple does not mean "easy." I suppose if one wants to learn magic to fool magicians then other factors come into play. For me, I don't give a whit about "fooling the boys." Maybe I would feel differently if I was good enough to be a lecturer. I'm not and I'll never be. In fact, the e-book I am writing will not receive favorable reviews from the knucklebusters among us. There is ONE routine that will get panned in fact yet it has played profoundly powerfully for me for two decades and the method is so childishly simple. How about John Bannon's work? Clock O' Doom is a recent rediscovery for me and the method is older than the Appalachians. But to civilians, it is a powerful effect at least in my experience. |

Is "Always Cut the Cards" done with a regular deck? I would like to learn it if it is.

I just went over Mountebank Miracle again. It really is a great and simple routine. Has anyone tried that on stage in front of a large crowd? If so, how did it play?

It's one of the first tricks I think of when someone hands me a deck and asks to see a trick; I do a reasonably decent ACR but never for more than 2-3 people for fear of a DL being detected from someone standing to the side of the action, but there is no fear with this one. |

It's been a while but finishes with laying 4 card choices face down in a row and spectator asked to point to and hold selection, turns over and amazingly their card. Need to look it up again.

Here's a quote from Ron Bauer and Chosse would have attested to it. In fact, he has!
"RR teaches, in an orderly way, basic card handling and basic card sleights, then gives you drills for practicing, and a few tricks to use to try out these manoeuvres. If you’re a novice, don’t you think it’s presumptuous to skip around in the book, picking and eliminating the “right stuff” before you know what you’re doing? I do. Start at the beginning. Read and run through each item. Make notes. DON’T TRY TO MASTER EVERYTHING. DON’T TRY TO LEARN EVERY TRICK FOR PERFORMANCE. IT TAKES TOO LONG, AND WON’T PAY OFF." Something to consider. Topsy Turvy is fun and gets good reactions but you'll have to modernize the presentation.

Now You See It always gets an astonished response, and it is not too difficult.
So many sleights...so little time.

Poker Player's Picnic is my favourite effect from Royal Road. So simple yet it always gets good reactions from spectators.

Royal Road is one of my favorite books ever on card magic. Probably because it is the first card book that taught me the basics in card magic.
Now You See It, 3 Cards Across, and A Tipsy Trick are probably the three tricks I always do from the book whenever I'm handed a deck of cards. There are other tricks in this book that I do as well, but I don't remember the names. I've once entertained a crowd in a bar for almost an hour with tricks mainly from Royal Road and Close-Up Card Magic (another favorite book) by Harry Lorayne. Very strong commercial effects.

As someone who's recently picked up the book and started working through it, I enjoy Topsy-Turvy cards as one that's really effective, when presented correctly, as well as being accessible to someone just learning to process. It definitely helps to better get over the idea that you're at risk of being "caught" which seemed to be one of my initial fears when beginning to present any of the tricks I have learned...

A very important chapter in the book is called "Routines".
It is important that if magic is to be performed what is to be performed should be thought out and planned as should the order of performance. |
