Hiya guys I am female magician, and was wondering on everyone's view of whether or not it is right for ladies to wear bow ties when they perform magic?
I am a stage magician more of a children's entertainer. One outfit I wear for the children is a green blaser (bla-zar), with a rainbow scarf around the neck going down the shoulders and rainbow gloves on the pockets, as I tend to perform to young children. I also have a variety of hats, like a jester's hat, a union jack hat etc. But do you think it would look right if I wore a bow tie to go with ym balzer? As I have here a yellow, black, green and red/blue one, that I bought cheaply and at the time thought I could wear them for part of my uniform - shows a bit of smartness. But I have received some bad advice about wearing bow ties from my friends that I had never heard of before - about if ladies wore them... HELP YOUR HONEST OPINIONS/ADVICE OR TIPS NEEDED. Belinda,
Sure, why not? One of the puposes of a bow tie, as opposed to a long tie or no tie, is that it focusses the viewer's (audience's) gaze on your face, rather than drawing it away. So, sure, go for it. |

The absolute last person you should ever ask about what a magician should wear is a magician. Magicians, as a group, have ABSOLUTELY no fashion sense. If they did, you would see much better looking acts. The ones that look the best are the ones who have professional help in selecting an outfit. Go to a theatrical costumer or a designer and ask them what you should wear. Have them design a costume around your performing requirements. There are differing requirements for differing audiences and venues.

I think girls in general attract attention as is... and with a girl wearing a tux or some pretty debonair outfit, it'll just be an extra bonus.

I agree with Bill. Although we aren't color blind, someone whos job is to dress people according ot their needs on stage will have a much better idea of how to dress a performer than the performer himself.

I am in agreement with Bill, too. Looks like maybe he got some professional help . Love that pic, Bill . I like the idea of a tux. I also agree with the "if you like the tie and are comfortable wearing it, why not?" philosophy. You need to wear something you like and are comfortable in to pull it off. The audience will know if you're not. Just don't wear the tie too tight around your neck, I hear that's bad for you. And the kids will tell you if they think you're cool. Listen to THEM. So far I'm getting by without professional help , unless you count the fact that I'm a theatre student. I decide what I wear right now.

A bow tie is a great idea, I think a magician should always look striking. Look at what Bill Palmer is wearing in his picture. That is what he wears to go to the Mall in Houston. Al

Hi there Belinda...
I am a costume designer, and magician. If your colors compliment each other, you are comfortable in said bowtie, and you like the way it looks, try it out for a couple shows. If you decide you do not like it, you don't have to keep wearing it. Things can always be changed. We control our costumes, they don't control us. So try out some things you like, command them, and use them to compliment your act. You may make some new and interesting discoveries. As for a bowtie itself, I see it as classy and there's never anything wrong with that. If you have any other questions or comments, please feel free to PM me...I'd be glad to help! Cheers and Good Luck with your new look.

I'd go along with "wear what you are happy in," fr3ky.
I can't see anything wrong with a bow tie. People are used to magicians looking somewhat different. For example I wear jeans and cowboy boots and mainly black for street magic. You may want to take advice from a theatrical costumer, but they should be able to coorinate a particular look with your act in most cases. |
