Did a quick search but no luck. Some staff are listed as being "Grammar Hosts". What does that mean?

That's exactly what they do...strangely enough.

I did wonder what they did, but I've not seen any evidance that they actually correct people.
Maybe they do a lot of PMing Soupdragon, are you from UK? or have a dropped a clanger

Seriously? weird notion!
Yes acmp - from "oop norf" Lol What does acmp stand for btw? |

Will "oop norf" be corrected to "I live in the north of the country", I wonder?
Will lol & btw be deemed bad grammar? On a serious note, they are called grammar hosts, not grammar police. Could they be there to help people who don't have english as a first language? I personally think it's all part of the rich tapestry of life. |

Not all words are checked that I know of.
There's plenty of bad punctuation, mispellings, acronyms, etc. I once posted a message with all mispellings but understandable if sounded out. It was deleted by a GH and I was notified that though I did nothing wrong that it had to go. It's a good thing overall. |

Normally, we don't discuss staff policies and actions in the open forums however, this seems like a legitimate question. If you take a look at the staff page, you'll see that other than the management and tech team, we have about 19 members with various titles.
A grammar host is responsible for trying to insure that words are spelled correctly, punctuation and proper grammar is used, and that no rules violations are made. Understand that with 95 forums and 100's of posts each day coming in to them, it is not always possible to correct them all immediately. It's a never ending job. ACMP: If the job has been done correctly, you would never see any evidence of it. The posts are corrected and resubmitted so they look fine when you see them. Many errors are just simple ones and it is not our intent to embarrass anyone in public forums so they are just fixed. More flagrant or repeated errors would be corrected and possibly pointed out to the member via the PM system. Soupdragon: Yes, normally if you typed oop norf in the body of a post, it would be changed to "up north", but in this case, since you are attempting to be funny, it will stay as written. Well known abbreviations such as BTW or LOL are acceptable. In general, if you read the rules of the Café, regardless of whether the member is a "grammar hosts", "quality control" or "staff", their function is to make sure all the rules are followed.
