Then do an Ebay search for Jennifer Wilbanks. Sometimes I think we are in the wrong business.

Am I missing something? Is it a slow news weeks or are we entering in "silly season?" I don't see why this is getting prime time news and front page headlines, the runaway bride, not the ebay toast.

P.T. Barnum said it best "There's a sucker born every second" (paraphrase).
It is so obvious that the toast was hand made (make that man made). I don't know if this is a real auction or just a bunch of friends getting together for some weird kind of joke. 95 Bids and $530.00 ? Just goes to show how gullible some people can be. I think I will sell a beaker of Elvis Presley Urine (apple juice) and see what kind of bids I get . Iven

Of course it's faked! My question is still, why is this couple so #$&#^ important that they get front page headlines because she got cold feet?

Maybe it is because she committed fraud and reported that she had been kidnapped. Maybe it is because she faces criminal prosecution for her fraud. Maybe it is because her neighbors collected money for her only to find that she had kidnapped herself. Maybe it is because her anxiety touches many people who experience the same thing and wish they could have run away instead of getting married. Maybe...oh heck I can go on forever...
The toast is not a fake!!! However, it is NOT an image of Jennifer Wilbanks; no it is the image of the virgin Larry ( I know he lives down the street from me)!

See, I hadn't actually read the story. (My bad) I didn't hear the "kidnapping" part. Thanks for the info!

Have you noticed that every picture of her looks like Karen Carpenter on acid?
Best part of the whole story is the semi-jilted groom wants her back. There's a guy with a masochistic streak. ~michael

Well I am in the profession .. of "unstable" minds as it were .. and that Gal deffinatly has the blankest stare I have ever seen, I am soo glad and feel entirely safe knowing that .. One can blow up an airplane and get away with it .. easier than jilting someone at the alter , Lets hear it for homeland security
actually an after thought .. they say marriage is an institution ,,, perhaps those two need to be institutionalized Keet |

The saddest part of this story is the horrible ordeal she put her Parents through. It was a lucky thing her Mother did not have a heart attack, she was so worried about her thoughtless self centered Daughter.
To show how thoughtless she still is, the only appology she has made to the public (those who took time to look for her and the taxpayers who paid for it all) has been through the Family lawyer. I don't think she is sorry for anything other than the potential trouble she may have brought on to herself. In the long run she just may make some money on this because right now someone is thinking of writing a book and/or a movie. If this happen's, what has she learned from this experience? As far as the wedding still taking place at some future date? That is just plain DUMB for the groom. Maybe the two deserve each other. Iven

Even with the "fraud", even with the supposed kidnapping ... this story does not deserve the attention it's getting. At all. It's the media making a story bigger than it really is in order to capture voyeuristic viewers. Frankly, if someone checked, they'd probably find that there are dozens of cases similar to this every year. This one happened to happen during a slow news period, so the media decided that people would be entertained by the misery of perfect strangers. And they were right.
It's not news. It's entertainment, and it's entertainment at the expense of the people who are involved. It's Jerry Springer, but it's from "legitimate" news sources, so that seems to make it "okay". |

Yep. You nailed that one, Barry. Regarding her dragging this thing out: I heard on the Today Show this morning, from her minister friend, that she will likely make a public statement soon (milk that cow, Jenny!). 15 minutes of fame is in the 7th inning stretch.

One could argue that all news is entertainment! I don’t know how many people fake their own kidnapping. I doubt if there are really all that many. OK, last year that young soldier faked his own kidnapping in Iraq and now faces courts martial. Of course that story made the news for a while too.
Yep, I think that brides and grooms get cold feet regularly and run away. Still I doubt if many have faked their own kidnapping. Is the story newsworthy? Maybe yes, maybe no. It does have all the elements of true human interest and pathos. I Slow day? Entertainment? Human interest? I don’t know…I am captured by the tragedy of a family torn apart and hurting by the selfishness of a young woman.

The winning bid: US $15,400.00 ... I doubt friends did this, ebay is commission based and it would cost some money even if you didn't pay for it. Why the heck is toast selling for so much on ebay???
I want to let all magicians know that my toast had David Copperfields image on it this morning! I'll get it on ebay as soon as possiable! JoeJoe

If they don't pay it, no commission is paid to eBay. It goes up for a free relisting.

The actual quote is from David Hannum, who was part of a consortium that purchased the Cardiff Giant and refused to sell it to Barnum. So Barnum, who knew that the original was a fake, had someone carve one for him. When Hannum heard that the crowds were pouring in to see the fake fake, instead of his real fake, he said, "There's a sucker born every minute." Some say that he continued with "And the biggest one is me." One account of this can be found at http://www.historybuff.com/library/refbarnum.html

I heard her husband took back the engagement ring and gave her one of those prisoner location ankle bracelets instead.
