Hi all,

Strange questions I know, but do any of you know of anyone that can custom make plastic items, preferably in the UK?

I don't want to say TOO much here, but I will need a small item created and then produces X 500 or so. The size of a poker chip.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Gary

Yes, absolutely.

Do a Google search on this term: custom plastic
either with or without quotes, - using double quotes searches as a phrase and might yield even better results.

I got a ton of hits for places that will do custom plastic fab and injection molding for you even w/o the quotes.

Daffyd, I'm ROFLMAO, but be careful around here what ya post ! ;-)

Mate,

You'll be hard pressed to find anyone who will "tool up" to custom produce anything in plastic for a run of 500. It just costs too much, especially if you need molds.

But if you had a really good idea, it would sell 5000-10000 in magicdom, if it's a hit. That is also a much more realistic "small run" too.

But good luck!!!

Cheers

With visual scanning and laser modeling these days, it can be cheap enough to do a temporary mold or a short run. But you have to find a small shop with state of the art machinery.

But having said that, don't expect to get by at pennies per peice part.

You can do this at home using RESIN. Look for resin kits and then get some alginate too.

Make a blank of your object. Use the alginate to make a mould. Set the resin in the mould.
You can colour the resin in the mix or paint it afterwards.

The tooling option is ok if you got the money. Those tools dies are yours.

You might find a garage kit (model) maker who can do short runs in polyurethane or phenolic resin (hard plastic).

If you choose to go cheaper and do the resin casting yourself, be aware that resin compunds are toxic; work with proper ventilation, goggles and respirator for the task.

Thanks for all your great suggestions. Looking at it now, 500 is quite a small number.

I will have to put some more thought into this!

If you decide on a garage caster, Mad Labs in Columbus, Ohio (run by Mike Parks) is a good one.
